OK, I'm not an avid film buff but last month I flicked around and stopped in a film that gripped me.
American Made about an American pilot that started flying undercover for the CIA, doing frequent runs, but on the way back got involved in drug cartel which the CIA turned a blind eye until the latter years when they wanted to frame the cartel and got him to take photos of them which they published and basically signed his assination.
Was only at the end, when they listed the events after, I found out of was a true story.
Then I watched another film called 'the bank job'
Again another true film about a bank heist that was gripping and true story.
The last film that also gripped me, I watched the other night called 'Papillon'. I loved that film.
I need to find more like that.
So what's your favourite films, based on true story? |

Men of honor is good, tells the story of Carl Bashir, the us navy’s first African American master diver staring Cuba Gooding Jr and Robert Deniro . Worth a watch |

Donnie Brasco is definitely worth a look.
Papillon as previously suggested too. But the original with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

Yes, the French man innocent for murder.
Did 2 years solitary confinement, then 5 years trying to escape, then sent to Devils Island where he did escape, made it back to France and published his book which sold millions of copies. He got a reprieve and allowed back to France.
His wealthy friend with glasses stayed on Devils Island, said thats his home now. |

A few have mentioned Papillon. I've seen the original film and found it slow and not really engagung. I'd read the book before and it was one of the best books I've read, one to read again even sometime. |

Lone Survivor.
The film actually plays down the level of his injuries. He had over 20 bullet wounds, bit his tongue off and broke his back!
The ending was exaggerated though. |

Check out Captain Phillips. It is one of the few films where I have actually cried at the end. The last few scenes by Tom Hanks are very powerful and moving. Just shows how good of an actor he is
Deepwater Horizon with Mark Wahlberg is another good film |

That’s one of my favourite films and ties in nicely with American Made. Also Narcos goes into that story too. |

Only the end was exaggerated (the battle never took place during his rescue). If anything much of it was played down. The book is quite excellent. |

I don’t actually know the full story. It just seems highly unlikely he survived all that. |

I loved that film though American made and he survived it all, all because he got bored lol  |

Brilliant... I've got got some good films to watch.
Another great one I remembered. 'Catch me if you can' Frank Abagnale. Although a great film, allegedly true, several investigations have led to believe that his autobiography is also far fetched  |

The impossible about the Indonesian boxing day tsunami. Even though I knew the story of the family before I watched it was the most tense I've ever felt watching a film. |

Too many to choose just one so here's a few I would recommend
1- the town that dredded sundown (1976 version)
2- Zodiac, 2006 version watch this one first
3- Zodiac, 2007 version with Mark Ruffalo
4- glory, with Matthew Brodwick.
5- Elf, it must be true because santa is in it |

I think that it quite often happens that if you have read a book, and like it, it makes a strong impression and if you then see a film of it it is usually (not always) disappointing.

Mesrine is a fabulous film I couldn't believe he did all of those things, I had to Wikipedia the story and the film is spot on, like you I would recomend this movie. |

The guy it was initially based round was a consultant on the film IIRC- although i think he was a savant and not autistic |

I presume you're thinking of Kim Peek? The film is not based on him. The screenwriter met Peek and a number of savants to get inspiration. |

Deep Water (2006 film) or The Mercy.
Based on Donald Crowhurst.
Not as good or moving as the book (Strange final voyage of Donald Crowhurst) but still worth watching.
Reading the final log entry in the book is a mix of horror and despair and i'm not sure any film can convey reading his words into a cinematic experience.
