"All countries, your included have people who are anti the military and speaking as an ex serviceman too that's totally fine.. As is their right to express that albeit there are days like today perhaps that a bit of delaying such views whilst not enforced would be welcome.. We both have memorials in our areas that are testimony to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that people can express such views .." 1 Day out of 365 and people so visceral. It's sad.

"I literally have got handwritten cards in my mailbox today from our neighborhood children. I cried... So for some to forget your fallen that protected your values is sick. " That is something to treasure and to focus upon rather than the negative thoughts of some.. We live in democratic countries which allows for free speech, much preferable even if others views grate than some of the alternatives where people get locked up for their views..

Is 1 day such a determent in your assumed chaotic life ?

Most people who have an opinion on the act of remembrance are not anti military they are anti war. Of course it’s entirely right and proper that we respect and remember those who gave their lives, bodies and in some cases minds to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Those who have differing opinions have a right to them and those who have taken the shilling and donned the uniform should take pride in knowing they facilitated that right.

The military is there for one purpose to serve and protect. Yes politicians are ignorant with their decisions. Yes it's not about them it's about the " Military family". To me it crosses more boundaries that culture politics and international boundaries. So what is wrong being a warrior? Both male and female or whatever your sexuality is? 1day and some asshats have to complain.

I focus my thoughts on my fathers service to this country in the last world war and two friends who were damaged beyond repair after serving in NI. There are other countless other armed conflicts in recent history that are deserving of remembrance to. Here in the UK Sunday is as I say a very special day for the vast majority in the UK and most will show due deference.

Shall we stop American flags flying and putting portraits of the local fallen on display? The huge disconnect is sad. As I say here in the UK we remember those who have served the nation in times of need and I think the act of remembrance is carried out with dignity and respect. I would say however that those who do take the shilling should, when their service comes to an end, be entitled to be served by the nation by of care.

Then you have witnessed things I would never want to and no doubt the Geordie lad went to his heaven surrounded by love and unyielding compassion. The act of remembrance is just that. The heads of states, the politicians have a small part to play in the act it’s not about politics it’s about remembering the Geordie lad, the Tommy and the GIs. Those lions were for the most part lead by donkeys. But that is war.

Everyone is well aware what has happened historically (and recent events). If folk don't 'get it', well then that's on them, no? My grandad signed up early as he could see subscription on the horizon. As a result he served as part of a Lancaster bombing crew from start to finish. He was beyond bloody lucky to get to go home, infact very one of few considering life expectancy with that. He got his medals, he never talked about it after. He did what he felt he would have to do regardless because folk above him make their own shitty choices. My brother served in the army in Ireland during the back end of the troubles. He was on body recovery duty a few times and said it was pretty shit (unsurprisingly). My cousin was out doing mass grave recovery during her time served. .. I think there's very little 'woohoo!', vs a lot of 'wtf' from every generation that serve, no? Yes absolutely you make friends for life. But ethically you're often paid very little to do a lot of questionable shit IMHO

"Remembrance day remembers all British forces and seems to forget about all the atrocities they did all over the world. There is a reason The Irish don't wear the poppy yet the British have a problem with it every year. Ireland should have always been left to be it's own country. Unfortunately as it was not it's caused so many deaths. It ain't right, and it's certainly not pretty. But some of the folk who kicked back have done it in a 'look at me', horrific statement fashion in bygone yearsboth sides " Absolutely both sides. Should have been a free country decades ago. But you can't seem to agree on that yet?

"Regardless of what nation you are from, remembrance is for all of the fallen in any conflict. My youngest son started his basic training last week, 4th generation to join our armed forces, the first generation took 6 brothers out of the family and the only survivor was my grandfather and then his youngest brother who was too young to join up. For me it is remembering what they gave along with so many others." Exactly it's sacrifice for the values of others. Much respect for your family

He was on body recovery duty fishing someone out of acid, back to back patrol. Couldn't leave the barracks... Nobody wanted to be there. Nobody. Folk create their own misery sometimes perhaps? Nope youre going to have to repeat that. Calm down and type slowly. But the 1st part I understood. Did I say it wasn't inflation? I said... there is a cost of living crisis but we are letting the politicians get away with giving themselves pay rises to 100k a year when nurses are having to go to food banks. Listen I live in a tent and pay no rent. I don't have bills and don't pay taxes. I don't claim benefits... I'm as free as anyone can get this day and age. I don't need to care what's going on with inflation etc. Ok I'll pay a bit more for some food. So why should I care? I care because no one sees what's really going on in the world. Some do but people like yourself who is military minded will always defend the government no matter what. Americans kill more Americans than any other country has. Why are you not fighting for that? You want to save the lives of Americans?

We hate you. to a certain extent I can understand that,if the boot was on the other foot I would probably feel the same Ireland ? No offense it's nothing compared to my tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Reevaluate t be e difference. " I have read this whole thread. I am concerned. You mentioned your PTSD and it seems you are triggered right now. I understand, 25 years of my own service has left me with cPTSD. I suggest, with much love and respect, that this thread is not helping you. Step away and practice fome self care. This is not a healthy environment for you x

"Yeah ok,there are many conflicting reports about that day,I'm not saying who is right either,I don't think anyone will really know, only the perpetratorsim right we learn proper history unlike the British people we know exactly what the British empire was like. The British empire has long since passed IMHO. Times change, shit moves on. None of us are innocent in history here. We've all ancestors who've made poor judgements not to us its not. Our population has still not recovered since the genocide the British tried to do to us so it runs very deep our hatred towards the British forces. Ain't it funny that the British want to forget and move on when it's something they've done. " Well it's not exactly like it all kicked off in 2019 is it? So, yes for all involved it'd presumably be for the best to move the fuck on?

"To most The Great War had no reasonable cause. Plus many were missing or found with no identification. Thus remembrance was born. Adolf continued the war with an insane inferiority complex and there was little appetite to oppose him. We must be thankful they did. Other wars have different causes but most thrown into them would rather not be sent. Choose to not remember if you want but keep quiet about it." Same goes for telling people to remember when they choose not to openly express it… like the OP has mentioned.

"It's my fault I apologize. Certain days trigger memories. I get overwhelmed emotionally." I like said earlier you have witnessed things I would never want to. You did your duty and should be proud of what you did. However there is absolutely no glory in war quite the opposite only suffering and tears. Tomorrow I will stand at the war memorial and take time to remember all those who have have served and thank them for allowing me the freedoms Bourne from their lost years their ongoing pain. I will take my dads record of service (1939 - 47) his brothers desert rat medals and remember them for what two ordinary working class Manchester lads gave in the fight against one of if not the most vilest doctrines to be prosecuted by the human race. I am no psychologist but when the trials of life from your service manifest seek out the writings of the war poet Wilfred Owen specifically those poems on the post war issues. I hope you feel better today.

"I'm sitting out Remembrance this year, no going to church, no watching the cenotaph on tv, no poppy. I'm not forgetting or ignoring the sacrifices of all those before and present, I'm just paralyzed by the major personal losses that I've suffered starting 1st February 2018, then on the 16th of September this year, and on the 2nd of November. Plus other losses not quite so close but still marking me. What I'm trying to say but failing badly at, is that not everyone who appears to be ignoring Remembrance Day has actually forgotten the fallen, and why they fell. Some of us are kind of crushed by other things and cannot make the emotional space at the moment in case we break completely. So please be kind to those who might not be wearing a poppy, might not be putting on the public show, try to judge people more by their actions. Conversely, not everyone wearing the poppy really does care. IMHO there are many in politics/media/other public positions for whom remembrance season is just cosplay. A chance for points scoring, a public show but feeling nothing, or worse than nothing. Those who tell others to go to war, then treat them as worthless when they return. I've rambled on too long. Peace. Polly xxx" Poll You have nor rambled at all you’re having to deal with recent personal life events which take precedence. The very fact that you are stating your position shows you care. Peace to!
