I am a American to me it's sad how some of you forget the fallen and have to lash out. I and my husband served with your troops. They deserve the utmost respect. Keyboard warriors forming a opinion that the have no clue what that means. Pisses me off. I have camaraderie with sisters and brothers from other nations. All family in my eyes. To this day they have my 6.

No one should be expected to celebrate and commemorate something in a morally approved manner.

That is something to treasure and to focus upon rather than the negative thoughts of some..

We live in democratic countries which allows for free speech, much preferable even if others views grate than some of the alternatives where people get locked up for their views..

So in my opinion respect those who served. We do it all year round some of you can't even do it for one fucking day. I love all my sisters and brothers that serve. Is 1 day such a determent in your assumed chaotic life ?

Most people who have an opinion on the act of remembrance are not anti military they are anti war. Of course it’s entirely right and proper that we respect and remember those who gave their lives, bodies and in some cases minds to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

Those who have differing opinions have a right to them and those who have taken the shilling and donned the uniform should take pride in knowing they facilitated that right.

The military is there for one purpose to serve and protect. Yes politicians are ignorant with their decisions. Yes it's not about them it's about the " Military family". To me it crosses more boundaries that culture politics and international boundaries. So what is wrong being a warrior? Both male and female or whatever your sexuality is? 1day and some asshats have to complain.

Genuinely interested here, I promise I'm not being facetious - you're not conscripted but have to kill off the back of those decisions (many of which you won't know when volantarily signing up). Doesn't that bother you? I do struggle to get on board with blanket hero worship of the military when I don't see a clear cause for what we're doing. I still mourn every life lost though, and hope we'll do better in future.

This is a very sensitive subject. As I say here in the UK we remember those who have served the nation in times of need and I think the act of remembrance is carried out with dignity and respect.

I would say however that those who do take the shilling should, when their service comes to an end, be entitled to be served by the nation by of care.

Then you have witnessed things I would never want to and no doubt the Geordie lad went to his heaven surrounded by love and unyielding compassion.

The act of remembrance is just that. The heads of states, the politicians have a small part to play in the act it’s not about politics it’s about remembering the Geordie lad, the Tommy and the GIs. Those lions were for the most part lead by donkeys. But that is war.

This season reminds me of the sacrifices made by many which have allowed us the freedoms that we now have. I have the utmost respect for those who serve in the armed forces. At the same time I hold contempt for those among our politicians who are perfectly happy to stir conflict to further their own careers, not giving a crap about those who may end up fighting and giving their lives in wars that never needed to have happened. And I downright despise governments that having sent soldiers to fight, then treat them like shit when they return from war (eg. most of the British governments over the last couple of hundred years).

Those who wear red, white, black or purple poppies remember the sacrifices of those who died in wars - perhaps remembering different groups in different ways, but nonetheless showing respect. Also many who choose to wear no poppy will still dwell upon the conflicts past and present, wearing their respect inwardly, feeling no need to make it a public proclamation.

Unfortunately there are also some who will wear the red poppy as no more than an obligatory decoration at this time of year, without a single thought about what it stands for, or even actually tarnishing its meaning by wearing it (many politicians and others who make money and achieve power through casual disregard for those who have to do the fighting).

The reality is for veterans, and for the families of those killed in action/died of wounds....everyday is Remembrance Day.

And lets not forget the amount of service personnel who take their own lives. Sometimes years after having left their respective branch of the Armed Forces.

I think ive lost more mates from suicide, than in actual combat.

Absolutely massively an emotive day for some folk/and their families. Respect should always of course be a given. However, I think for the younger generation it feels probably very removed from their lives, and that is understandable too perhaps

I’m from a military family (Army brat)... I always observe Remembrance Day and any other military observation days.

I ensured my son wore his poppy to school and on Sunday we’ll sit and watch the service on TV.

The problem is that not many people understand what our vets went through, what they still go through whether serving or veterans, you’ll never change their minds unfortunately, so make peace with it.

To be honest it's each to their own. I think for the majority of the UK public the day/2min silence is observed. Everyone is well aware what has happened historically (and recent events). If folk don't 'get it', well then that's on them, no? My grandad signed up early as he could see subscription on the horizon. As a result he served as part of a Lancaster bombing crew from start to finish. He was beyond bloody lucky to get to go home, infact very one of few considering life expectancy with that. He got his medals, he never talked about it after. He did what he felt he would have to do regardless because folk above him make their own shitty choices. My brother served in the army in Ireland during the back end of the troubles. He was on body recovery duty a few times and said it was pretty shit (unsurprisingly). My cousin was out doing mass grave recovery during her time served. .. I think there's very little 'woohoo!', vs a lot of 'wtf' from every generation that serve, no? Yes absolutely you make friends for life. But ethically you're often paid very little to do a lot of questionable shit IMHO

I served for 20 years, I’m proud of what I did and wouldn’t change a thing.

Remembrance Day to me is special, I lost friends and colleague’s during my service and on operations, it’s my chance to remember them in my own way. If people don’t agree with what the military has done over the years, then that is fine and their own opinion.

My brother served in Cooks Town going back a few decades. He was on body recovery duty fishing someone out of acid, back to back patrol. Couldn't leave the barracks... Nobody wanted to be there. Nobody. Folk create their own misery sometimes perhaps? He didn't want to be there at all. The locals didn't want him there either. Blame the government/issues, not the individual

It seems the debate has gone of track somewhat.

Let’s not forget sight that most people in the UK observe and respect the act of remembrance. Some people have views that may not with the main stream and it’s their right to do so.

War is often waged by those who have very little respect for human life and in the recent past for no valid reason. The clip below demonstrates that the prosecution of armed conflict is by those who are detached from reality. Lions led by donkeys.

The cenotaph really does deserve respect, gratitude and unremitting thanks from all who value freedom.

Unpopular opinion alert. Those who died in the war were not automatically hero’s because they gave the ultimate sacrifice, they were also victims. It didn’t stop war over 100 years ago, it won’t stop it in the future. I’ll be taking my kid to a service tomorrow, she’ll be reading the names of local people who died in service, in remembrance fashion, but people who serve and complain about a lack of respect are often, to my mind, just justifying the self importance of their own service. Case in point with the OP who has chosen today to complain about how others undertake (or don’t) remember since over actually promoting its importance. It is important, I k own the names of the families that lost multiple members of their family on my local memorial, and their regiments, but being told to remember better, irks.

At least we still have free speech, which is why people can have their own views and voice them if they wish.

No we don't have flags on every street corner and we don't pledge allegiance to it in the classroom. That is more about indoctrination then patriotism.

The recent political disions in America regarding women's rights and abortion are atrocious atrocious and at least our children are safe in schools because our politicians chose to defend the rights of the public and not the right of others to bear arms.

I make a polite request..... Please do not come to a country that is more free than yours and critise unless you are prepared to take a hit back.

Living in a democracy people have a right to celebrate the way they choose to… even if they were to do nothing that’s their given right and choice…

Do people love the sacrifices our brave soldiers made.. absolutely, But you have to look at the history of wars.. which wars are we commending our troops on? The iraq war? To me that is a war crime by our politicians… I wouldn’t say I’m proud of our troops fighting in that war.. more sympathetic that they had to go there and go through what they went through by the decisions of our politicians.. when you say your “proud” want exactly are we proud of… I know what I’m proud of… my great grandfather who served in World War Two… that’s who I will be wearing my poppy for.. not the Iraq war where near a quarter of a million Iraqi civilians were killed.. and when we left the country in a absolute mess… we all know what happened after..

I like said earlier you have witnessed things I would never want to. You did your duty and should be proud of what you did.

However there is absolutely no glory in war quite the opposite only suffering and tears. Tomorrow I will stand at the war memorial and take time to remember all those who have have served and thank them for allowing me the freedoms Bourne from their lost years their ongoing pain. I will take my dads record of service (1939 - 47) his brothers desert rat medals and remember them for what two ordinary working class Manchester lads gave in the fight against one of if not the most vilest doctrines to be prosecuted by the human race.

I am no psychologist but when the trials of life from your service manifest seek out the writings of the war poet Wilfred Owen specifically those poems on the post war issues.

I hope you feel better today.

As an ex serviceman who served 24 years in various theatres of war and conflict i remember the fallen all year round having lost friends and family, not just on 11/11/11. However it is a chance to ALL who wish to do so to remember. Some will not that is there choice.

The bond of the military is strong amongst all our brothers and sisters

I'm sitting out Remembrance this year, no going to church, no watching the cenotaph on tv, no poppy. I'm not forgetting or ignoring the sacrifices of all those before and present, I'm just paralyzed by the major personal losses that I've suffered starting 1st February 2018, then on the 16th of September this year, and on the 2nd of November. Plus other losses not quite so close but still marking me.

What I'm trying to say but failing badly at, is that not everyone who appears to be ignoring Remembrance Day has actually forgotten the fallen, and why they fell. Some of us are kind of crushed by other things and cannot make the emotional space at the moment in case we break completely. So please be kind to those who might not be wearing a poppy, might not be putting on the public show, try to judge people more by their actions.

Conversely, not everyone wearing the poppy really does care. IMHO there are many in politics/media/other public positions for whom remembrance season is just cosplay. A chance for points scoring, a public show but feeling nothing, or worse than nothing. Those who tell others to go to war, then treat them as worthless when they return.
