April Ashley, the first Brit to undergo gender reassignment (sex change) has received her MBE for services to transgender equality.
Born in 1935, and went through reassignment surgery in Morroco in 1960. She was also on the cover of Vogue.
How good is it that she has been recognised for what she has done and probably had a tough time of it, the same as some tg's still have to go through in this day and age.
More power to the person rather than the outer shell people see. |

Cant even begin to think what she had to go through!
It amazed me (may be seen by some as trivial, it really isnt btw) she even got the cover of Vogue. Even in this day and age how many TG's have even been mentioned in Vogue never mind had the cover!

I'm not in favour of gongs for doing what you do on a daily basis.
I can't see why a lollipop lady should get a medal for being a lollipop lady. If she volunteers as a Brownie leader for 40 years - that's fine.
Being transgendered is what you ARE, not what you put effort into, or sacrifice for. |

If you read my initial post you will see she was nominated for the hard work she has put into equality for transgender.
So yes I agree and support her being recignised for the work she has done and can only imagine the walls she has come up against over the years. |

I understand and accept what tou are saying, but your earlier post seems to take away the fact April deserves it. She's not a well paid star, public interest or well known famous person/sports star.
I want to show my respect and comgratulations to someone who deserved acknowledgement in my eyes. |

There are people who do what they do for themselves and those who do what they do for others.

As I aforementioned, April has done a lot of good for transgender equality. Sorry dont have the full facts and figures to hand, but will dig them out tomorrow for you. Or try google to see what she achieved

I see no evidence she/ he's done anything other than promote transgendered people (ie her/him).
That's not what gongs ought to be about. |

I think it's well deserved, it takes a lot to stand up for your beliefs/lifestyle!!
Especially back in the 60's, 70's when people weren't as openminded/educated on these topics. |

So a blind person who has furthered the rights of blind people shouldn't get a gong?
Or a black person who has spent a lifetime working for equal rights?
Or even Simon Weston who spent years working for the rights of injured veterans?
She could have had her sex change and then slipped into anonymity - as far as I remember she was able to get her birth certificate changed, that law came after her. She had no reason to stand up and be counted and yet she did, repeatedly.
For many it is accident of birth which puts them in the position where they are challenged. It is how they rise to that challenge and the grace and bravery and commitment they have to taking that challenge on that leads to people getting gongs - ffs civil servants get gongs cos they do their jobs satisfactorily!!! |
