I’ve worked in Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, travelled through Egypt often, if they’re not Arabs then perhaps somebody should tell them since they all seem to think they are and they’re all a part of the LoAS.

The League of Arab States was founded in 1945 by Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan and Yemen, and has since grown to include Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, the Sudan, and various smaller states like Kuwait for example.

It depends which Egyptian you speak to, as to whether they think themselves to be Arabs. Egyptian is a pretty distinct racial group in itself, quite different to most Middle Eastern Arabs.

Officially, Egypt is part of the Arab League, along with 22 other countries.

The Egyptians who call themselves none Arab are Egyptians who oppose the Arabization of their country.

Since Egypt isn't originally Arab, there was an indigenous identity that kind of disappeared as the Islamic Invasions occurred.

That’s why.

I dare anybody to go and tell the everyday person on the street that they’re not an Arab.

A statement on Quora by Hesham hassaneim, a student of Egyptian Hisory and Culture

ARE EGYPTIANS really ARABS

No. We are not Arabs. Although Egyptians have been brainwashed by multiple governments into thinking this way, with Sadat’s government going so far as renaming the country the Arab Republic of Egypt, this is simply not true.

There are many ways I can explain this. But I’ll choose three. Genetics, history and culture.

Genetics. Multiple studies have been done on the genetic history of the modern Egyptians. And you know what they all concluded? Egyptians are not Arabs. Now you really should NOT take the word of a random stranger online when it comes to research, so I leave you with some links that can help you do some private research if you so choose.DNA analysis proves that Egyptians are not Arabs - Egypt IndependentNational Geographic's DNA Analysis Concludes that Egyptians are Only 17% ArabHistory. The Arabs that came to Egypt were soldiers. There was never a mass migration of Arabs into Egypt. There was never a mass exodus of Egyptians out of Egypt. Such an event would have been noted down in Arab history, Egyptian history, or any country that suddenly had a massive influx of immigrants from Egypt. Not to mention that the size of the Arab people was simply nothing in comparison to the size of the Egyptian people. Even if every single person who was living in the Arabian peninsula moved to Egypt, they still would have been a minority. And we know that didn’t happen. Egypt saw Arab soldiers move there. There was never a mass migration of Arabs into Egypt, there was never a mass exodus out of Egypt, there was never a mass holocaust of the Egyptian people.Culture. Some people will point to the fact that Egyptians speak Arabic as evidence that Egyptians are Arabs. Unfortunately, that’s not how genetics work. When I learned Spanish in college it did not change my genetic makeup and turn me into a Spaniard. I speak English as my native language - that doesn’t make me an Englishman. Egypt was forced to Arabize by the Ummayad Caliphate. That doesn’t make them Arabs, any more than how the Natives of Mexico were forced to learn Spanish. But don’t go telling any Mayans that they’re really Spaniards.More on culture, Egyptian culture is more influenced by Turkish culture than it is by Arab culture. Have you ever studied Arab culture? Compare the Gulf to the Egyptians. The culture is so different. From music, to dress codes. The way people talk, the social norms. Egyptians are nothing like the Arabs. However our culture was heavily influenced by Islam, although it wasn’t until I started learning about Turkey that I realized that our culture takes from the Turks, not the Arabs. And it makes sense. Egypt’s ruling family, the Muhammad Ali dynasty, they were Ottomans. And they founded Egypt’s modern state. The Ottomans/Turks made up, for a long time, Egypt’s ruling class. Movies, music, culture. It was influenced by them. The Arab were soldiers.

In short, Egyptians are not Arabs. Egyptians have been programmed to repeat that line “we’re Arabs” by successive governments vying for power and control. But it is a lie. It was based on the political aspirations of a military desperate to create a super power in the Middle East and North Africa - look up the United Arab Republic. It was a dream of a dictator. And the military used their dream of a superpower to brainwash a nation into forgetting who they are. But with the influx of information online today, the Egyptian people have started to reject this lie and are accepting themselves for who they are. Not Arabs, but Egyptians. Unique in their heritage. A people on our own. Not a part of any colonial Arab state. Calling myself an Arab would be like calling myself English or French. All three colonized Egypt. But we are not the descendants of any of them.

I hope that cleared that up.

"I’ve worked in Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, travelled through Egypt often, if they’re not Arabs then perhaps somebody should tell them since they all seem to think they are and they’re all a part of the LoAS.

Arabs.

I just googled it. And despite Egypt being an Arab state,

Egyptians arent considered as Arabs.

They speak Arabic and are Muslim, but they are not Arabs.

Ive got no idea how that works!!!!

Please feel free to Google it...and find either evidence to confirm this, or to counter it.

Its actually quite interesting

Praise Allah!!

Bit premature chief."

Well done for posting that

" Egypt was forced to Arabize by the Ummayad Caliphate."

That would explain a lot! And why there is such confusion and polictical sway.

Arabization of Egypt was more cultural than genetic, you can’t change genetics, the 17% of the population that are Arab by genetics would still be pretty offended that some random white geezer on FAB has declared them not Arabs.

Then there’s the rather high percentage that consider themselves Arab culturally.

But, if a white guy on Fab has decided their not Arab then who are they to question it… whilst living in an Arab state, that’s a founding member of the league of Arab states.

It's not 17% of Egyptians have Arab DNA. It means that if you examine the DNA of an average Egyptian, about 17% of the total is of Arab derivation. The other 83% is "other" origin. It's a bit like a British person who's lived in Basingstoke their whole life, doing a DNA test and finding 17% Viking DNA. It doesn't make them Viking.

Egypt is a curious cross cultural melting pot, a bit like us here in the UK. It's quite distinct to any other country, either in North Africa or elsewhere.

Egyptian people are Egyptian.

Dunno, but our Egyptian students are quite distinct and are very keen to share their Egyptian culture, they don't naturally gravitate to the Middle Eastern Arab students actually. Yes, they all speak Arabic and most (not all) share the Islamic faith, but most of the Iberian peninsula was occupied by Islamic people until as 1492 but I wager few modern Spaniards (esp. southern Spaniards) identify with that?

Arabic influence in Egypt is, as other said, more cultural and linguistic rather than embedded in their genetics.

I might ask some of our students more directly off the back of this

"Arabization of Egypt was more cultural than genetic, you can’t change genetics, the 17% of the population that are Arab by genetics would still be pretty offended that some random white geezer on FAB has declared them not Arabs.

Then there’s the rather high percentage that consider themselves Arab culturally.

But, if a white guy on Fab has decided their not Arab then who are they to question it… whilst living in an Arab state, that’s a founding member of the league of Arab states.

A bit of a simplification but let’s run with it?

Would you like me to elaborate on Y chromosome mapping and mitochondrial DNA inheritance?"

Yes I would actually.

Even Arabica coffee beans aren't Arabic!!!! They originate in modern day Ethiopia and crossed the Red Sea to modern day Yemen (on the Arabian peninsula). Hence the name. But they're actually Ethiopica beans!

Oh you mean the percentage of DNA in Egypt that’s arab?

Well yeah, it’s not a number I just sit and recite to myself for no reason at all

Would you like me to elaborate on Y chromosome mapping and mitochondrial DNA inheritance?

Yes I would actually."

So Y chromosomes:

Biggest single haplogroup is E1b1b (aka the "Adam" signature). Originated in North Africa/Horn of Africa and is typified by the SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) M215. This is the most common Y chromosome haplogroup in Africa.

Other high Y chromosome frequeny in Egyptian men is the J haplogroup - origins in the Caucasus, Anatolia, Levant area. Aka the Ottoman Empire.

Basically the Egyptian Y chromosome is African and Ottoman (unsurprising, given the geographical location and history of Egypt).

mtDNA:

There's two major mtDNA lineages in modern Egypt. Approximately correlate to either a "Northern" or "Southern" division, with the Northern mtDNA having most conserved sequences with mtDNA from the Eurasian mtDNA groups (similar to the whole Ottoman Empire link as the Y chromosome). The Southern mtDNA is most closely associated with sub Saharan African ethnic groups and the Nubian groups.

Take home message - Egyptians are predominantly ethnically Ottoman and North African. Not really a shock, no?

Awwwww but I like this fact. I like it that the beans are called Arabica because we white people "discovered" them somewhere in the Arabian peninsula but that actually, they came from somewhere else originally. I'm a boring old biologist and find that sort of thing interesting.

That combo makes modern Egypt. Just like the average British person has a relatively unique mix of DNA that distinguishes us, say, from the French, despite the French people being geographically close.

Some of us (like me) have random dollops of less typical DNA - I have a dollop of Ashkenazi Jewish DNA that is atypical of the average Brit for example, but is testament to the immigration of my Great Grandfather. You can distinguish English, Welsh and Scottish DNA signatures if you look hard enough.

The average Egyptian is a genetic mixture of North African and Ottoman-origin DNA. That is not the same as adjacent countries, e.g. Sudan and is also not the same as most Middle Eastern Arabs either.

PS: there's no such thing as a "British" DNA signature. Britain being constantly invaded over the centuries and receiving big waves of immigration from far and wide means lots of different things make up the British. Egypt has, to not quite the same extent, been invaded and occupied over the centuries. Some countries had/have far less variation due to limited immigration and less invasion from distinct ethnic groups.

Anyway, I'll put my biology brain to bed now because I'm sure it's very boring.

Indeed, but modern Egyptians reflect predominantly what I've discussed. Of course, the Roman Empire covered vast swathes of Europe and lots of other places and the Phonecians and others got all over the place too. Those "invasions" are reflected in the predominantly "Ottoman Empire" and "North and Sub Saharan African" ethnic connections. Interesting DNA analysis of mummified ancient Egyptians reflect a pretty different ethnic make up.

What I'm trying to say is that the typical Egyptian genetic makeup is distinct from the average Middle Eastern Arab and also distinct from the ethnic groups nearby to Egypt. They have a much greater diversity in ethnic origins, hence the argument that to be "Egyptian" is distinct in itself. It makes sense, because of Egypt's location and history, as I said. It's on the crossroads between Africa, the Med and the Arabian peninsula and so you'd expect a diverse genetic heritage.
