Anyone else watching this? Rare I have the patience to binge watch something, but I'm really enjoying this.
Think I'm developing a man crush on Jack O'Connell. He's rapidly becoming one of my fave actors
Connor Swindells is also superb in it. |

"Stephen Knight, he's clearly not a one hit wonder lol.
Think I prefer this to Peaky Blinders. That suffered from too many slow mo scenes of them all walking along and looking moody "
He also co created Who Wants to be a Millionaire! |

Its getting quite a lot of good feedback.
But i binned it after about 40mins. Too much made up stuff added to it.
Having read quite a few books on Mayne, Lewes and Stirling. |

I've taken it for what it is: A Boys Own retelling, with added punk music and profanity.
Apparently Stephen Knight had to tone it down, as viewers wouldn't believe it otherwise!! |

This.
Lasted through the first episode then I thought "too much of this is just dramatisation for the sake of it."
Went to watch All Quiet On The Western Front. Now THAT is a must-watch of the year, on par with 1917. |

I know people will enjoy it, because its been sexed up and given the Peaky Blinders treatment. And thats not an issue.
But why fabricate stuff?? Its an incredible story without it.
I knew id struggle with it in the first 5mins, when Paddy Mayne beat up the three MP's and walked out of prison.
Mayne never spent any time in custody. Even after he beat up a Major while d*unk, who had supposedly killed his dog while Mayne was on a mission with No.11 Commando.
I heard some bits were actually events toned down to make them more believable. The grenade on the snooker table i remember reading about.
I wanted to hear what people from Northern Ireland thought of O'Connells accent.
Yes, All Quiet On The Western Front is brilliant.
They've changed the story quite a lot.
But some very poignant and moving scenes

Not what I was expecting, thought it would be more serious and struggled with the way the story was told, with the odd sound track, random screen shots of names and well boys style. As supposed to be taken from Ben McIntyre’s book, which I enjoy, I was disappointed in the style they chose to shoot this in. |

I'm loving it, just finished episode four. I know a lot of it is bollocks but it's very well made and I really like the characters. I understand there are options for further series, let's hope so. |

Only seen episode 1 so far, but taking it (as you do with any drama) at face value. It is (unsurprisingly) very Peaky ‘Blindersesque’, but of course it would be. If you look at that series versus the real history of the Peaky Blinders, there is a loose, but dramatised association with reality there also.
It is alluded to in the series (so I understand), but it was widely thought that Blair Mayne was gay, and that was part of his issue. He couldn’t accept it in his own mind, as sadly so many couldn’t then.
Still to see All Quiet yet. Again I understand it deviates significantly from the story of the 1933 and 79 version, but understand it to be be good depiction of the horrors of WW1. How can you have a remake that doesn’t include Cpl Himmelstosch!! - a key character of the storyline!!

"I've watched and enjoyed it but Paddy Maynes accent really grated on me as does every effort at a Northern Ireland accent so his scenes were hard to watch for that reason. "
The accent is even worse in the second series! Episode 2 was rendered hardly watchable for that reason
We've binged season 1 in the past week. I read the Ben MacIntyre book and had done a lot of research into the history. I was more amused at the raging online about stuff like it being ridiculous that they "killed off Jock Lewes" too early and that it spoils it all if David Stirling is out of the picture having been captured. Oh no! Imagine if these were actual historic facts?! |

"Apparently the scene where Stirling throws a fake grenade onto a snooker table didn't actually happen.
What really happened was he threw a real grenade.
"
Yep! I pointed that out to Mr KC, who was obviously very impressed at my detailed knowledge on the subject |

Can you explain what you mean? Your nephew died but how is that connected to a dramatisation of Ben McIntyre's book about the establishment and early actions of the SAS, during the 1940s? It's clearly stated at the start that the programme is not a documentary or history.
Plenty of actors have played military personnel and hardly any of them have a single second of military experience. I don't understand why Rogue Heros would be any different. |

The factual book that it’s based on is a fantastic read. As with most adaptations for TV and Cinema they have taken a few liberties. The female spy character isn’t in the book for example. Equally I’ve read that the representation of Paddy Maine is less than realistic. Nobody alive today was there so we can never truly know the absolute reality, even with books we all have our own interpretations of what the reality must have been like.
However the events portrayed did happen and the people who carried out those missions undoubtedly showed great courage, skill annd determination and for that the story should be told. If this show brings their story to a wider audience then for me that’s a good thing. |

Mike Sadler, who was one of the proper original members in the SAS, only died a year ago at the age of 103 and he was consulted as a part of the research into the programme, before he died. The SAS regimental historian was consulted, the archives of the regiment were consulted. Lots of the evidence was already collated by Ben McIntyre when writing the book. So I think the programme has been informed by at least one person who knew Paddy Mayne and the others. That said, it is supposed to be a drama, not a historical documentary so of course they've taken liberties and dramatised some things in different ways.
The way some people are getting het up about the "historical accuracy" of this drama makes me wonder if they've ever seen a "inspired by real events" TV show before. |

"Really enjoyed the first series, could barely make it through the second due to Jack O'Connell slaughtering the NI accent"
I know! What happened to his accent since the first series?! It wasn't brilliant in series 1 but it's downright awful in series 2. Surely there would have been NI actors who would have fitted the part? |

I’ve not started the second series but loved the first. My comment was aimed at responding to previous negative comments, seems I missed the mark. But for avoidance of doubt I’m a fan of the series, the book and the documentary |

So that would mean your siblings would have been around 60 years old we than you, that's a big age gap.
Do you mean your nephew was in another War, possibly the Gulf War? I'm only saying this because I think you mention an 'ied'. Does that mean an improvised explosive device that was used extensively in the Gulf War.
And why are you concerned that the actors do not have a military background, do you think actors should only play roles they have life experience of?
Anyway sorry for your loss, just couldn't make out exactly what you were saying. It's a terrible thing to have to go through.

I've made 3 attempts to watch the first episode of the second series and each time switch it off for this exact reason.
I was looking forward to it but it's amazing how something like that can be so jarring and remove you from the story. |

I think it's just what it is and many other movies and shows are, and exaggeration of the truth "artistic licence" I think it's known as it literally says at the start it's NOT a history lesson.
The premise being a rough idea of how the regiment came about using some of the real characters as inspiration whilst throwing in some actual facts and paying respect to the horrors of war and how it affects people.
Dodgy accents aside the acting is pretty good and it's well made. |

Enjoyed it apart from the terrible NI accent, it’s inspired by true events so take it as what it is, a somewhat fictional story, with real members names being used.
Only met 22 Squadron once and from memory, the guys are not that tall, carry different weapons, Scottish and some great facial hair. They also walk around acting like they own the place. |

I love both sessions, it's not historically accurate but it's a close enough story for tv. I think the show shows a very brief glimpse of the true horror that went on. That said brilliant show and can't wait for series 3. |

Having listened to some of the video interviews given to Ben MacIntyre when he was preparing the book (a factual book) and accompanying TV series (factual), actually the depiction of things isn't too far removed. I have no idea what some of the historian experts are going on about in the media because there are original SAS members from the foundation of the regiment who give accounts of things being very similar or the same as the current programme, in many areas/ways.
I trust the original members to know what people like Paddy Mayne were like whilst in the SAS, more so than people from the family etc. People don't behave the same at home with their families as they do when away fighting a war. |
