Reports that Bison calf has been born in Europe for the first time in thousands of years..

What will these so called scientists do next .

They are a law unto themselves.. This is not nature.. this is interference with nature..

Why?

It's reported the bison was conceived naturally, and the scientific community are positive about the bisons contribution to nature..

A bison was born in Blean Woods in Kent last week. This was quite big news. Made it onto the main BBC news programmes.

Sorry mate, that’s media bollocks, exaggerating things like usual…these are European bison (Bison bonasus) not American Bison (Bison bison), which exist in the wild in Poland/Eastern Europe and always have. There’s also a small pocket of them in a reserve in the Netherlands. The calf that was born down in Kent isn’t part of some sort of Jurassic Park style mad-scientist’s plan, they’ve reintroduced a small herd into an enclosure as part of a re-wilding project that will restore the woodland to more natural endemic species, improve soil etc etc etc. No idea why they used bison and not highland cattle, but I’m sure there is one.

It’s not the scientists you need to worry about, it’s farmers- there are a couple of herds of American Bison (one I know of in Wiltshire) that are farmed for lower fat steak. The farmers are also the ones who cross-breed them with cattle to make ‘beefalo’! I think this is the interfering in nature you want to be complaining about!

They're born all the time in reserves and zoos all over Europe.

How else would you think such an ancient species would survive so long

Out of what? Fixing hundreds of years of human mismanagement and damaging agricultural practices in order to restore biodiversity, improve habitat and reduce flood risks? I’d rather have scientists noses in these things than leaving it to politics and businesses to handle!

Of course they are, but in this instance it's the first to be born in the UK for centuries.

I agree... Science types should keep their noses out of science. Who are they to tell use about science and that? Twitter and Facebook is all you need to get facts from

There are about 7000 wild Bison across Europe. I assume that they've been breeding for a while.

Maybe they are all on Bison Fab, bemoaning their lot whilst assuming that all the other bisons are regularly getting it on when in fact no-one is getting anything...

I've never hear anyone refer to Bison as scientists or even 'so called scientists'...maybe its because they don't sell lab coats in their size and they have trouble operating a centrifuge- or they just don't teach the sciences in bison school?

Some of the old famous cave drawings in france where the gatherer/hunter type people blew dye across their hands to leave a Imprint on the rock surface often painted animals of that time alongside some being bison, Its 6000 years since the Bison roamed wild here in the uk.

Yes they are amazing animals they were around for the last 500 or so years of the woolly Mammoth the woolly mammoth survived all odds till man made sure he could,t They could have still been around with the bison today If they had been left alone.

The great Bison slaughter of the 19th Century in the US is quite extraordinary and depressing. About 5000 were killed each day .

People demand more food yield for less effort, so farmers have to evolve to meet the consumer demands.

Apparently, there are no 'pure' American bison, even in America.
