Amou Haji had refused to use soap and water for 67 years as he feared it would make him sick.
The Iranian, who lived in the province of Fars, resisted attempts from villagers to get him clean but finally caved in and had a wash a few months ago.
According to Iran's IRNA news agency, he became ill afterwards and passed away at the age of 94.
Despite his aversion to washing, Haji was otherwise healthy despite dining on uncooked porcupine roadkill and drinking dirty water from puddles out of a rusty oil can.
The man also had a penchant for smoking animal dung from an old pipe and was able to puff on four cigarettes at the same time.
Haji had attracted interest from scientists during his life as they were interested to discover what lifeforms may be present on his body.
The boffins were stunned to find that he hadn't suffered from any bacteria or parasites apart from Trichinosis - a bacteria that comes from eating raw meat.
