Once again... More doom and gloom from the UN. Its the end of the world type stuff.

But seriously anyone made any changes? Everyone still driving everywhere? Building patios.? Flying off? Importing from the other side of the world?

If it was that serious surely people would change their behaviours?

I got rid of my car 3 years ago. Inconvenient sometimes, but never looked back. Haven't flown in 10 years.

I'm trying to drive less and be more mindful of electricity usage.

I haven't bought any new clothing for a while, only second hand off Vinted. It's not only more sustainable, I've found some brilliant quirky pieces which are well made and much more interesting than the cookie cutter same-y same-y stuff available from the mainstream retailers. Cheap as chips too!

Of course to help. I have family all over Europe and in Japan and Australia, too, so it's not easy. But travel is such a driver of CO2 emissions. Especially flying.

I live a very low carbon life but in the big picture it makes no difference. UK is about 1% of global emmissions and falling; in China they're bulldozing forests to build skyscrapers and coal power stations.

Presumably we are the "end user" for a reasonably significant proportion of emissions in China and India though?

People don't like to account for that because it makes us feel more dirty

Bit like ICE cars like to tell us how the EVs use so much dirty energy by using electricity from national grid as if their petrol and diesel magically appears from ground directly into the petrol stations tanks

Its a fair question but I doubt it given the relative populations.

We've changed lots of things. Vegan diet. Cycle instead of driving (mostly). Second hand clothes (again mostly). Trying not to buy crap we don't need. Cold showers. Washing on the line as much as possible and wearing quick drying clothing.

Stopped driving.

Wear clothes until they fall apart and then mend.

Don't use shops anymore. Everything and I do mean everything is purchased online.

Haven't flown for over 10 years at least. Probably close to 15.

Turned down the CH temps, and also put on a timer. A little bit in the morning and a little in the evening to take the chill off.

Cooler showers.

Reduced washing machine temps. 30c for clothes. 40c for smalls because that's hygienic.

Some diet modification (need to do more on that score however).

There's probably a few other little changes as well we don't even think about. but those are the big ones.

Forgot to mention. Close to zero food waste. Just chicken bones / egg shells / coffee grounds mostly. Everything else like paper, glass, metal and most plastic and card is recycled religiously. We've bought separate bins to help sort and organise it. In some rooms we have mini bins for sorting. Eg, in my office I have a paper, a plastic and an other bin.

I think we have 14 or so bins in the house overall.

Do you have an outdoor space? You can add coffee grounds and ground-up egg shells to compost heaps, inside pots, and to top dress soil

Sadly as long as humans are driven by the acquisition of wealth we're fucked, the age of the anthroposcene is already drawing to a close, in recent years some of the brightest human minds have made their predictions as to how long we have left, though Putin may dramatically alter the timings, as the terminator model 101 says in judgement day "its in your nature to destroy yourselves" we were never going to last very long really, & anyway, "all things end" Spock, star trek the undiscovered country.

I would be far more willing if the largest culprit countries of the world were to be more on board otherwise what's the point of a country as small as ours taking action when we may only be responsible for a tiny percentage of the problem, it means we all make sacrifices so the biggest culprits can carry on.

Are we though? On paper sure we are about 1% but where does all the stuff we buy come from? We have pretty much zero manufacturing now so that helps us with our green credentials but we are buying more crap than ever before.

Drive a car from a foreign country, bought a TV from Asia, a phone?

That makes you as an individual & multiplied us as a country partially responsible for another countries emissions.

Our drive for “Ever cheaper” is not conducive to improving the climate.

Just think, if China were still a land of paddy fields & shacks the stuff we buy would just come from somewhere else cheap & it’d be their emissions, but it’s still us buying the stuff, so who really is responsible?

Looking at emissions per capita instead of per country is a good place to start, sure China & Asia are still up there but there’s a few surprises too.

The answer is to stop buying sh*t full stop. But that’s not the Capitalist way or doctrine is it.

Don’t get me wrong, we are not walking around wearing hessian sacking as we live by the “Don’t buy anything” mantra but at the same time you’ll rarely see us shopping for “New” clothes except for undies. Actually aside from food you’ll rarely find us out shopping full stop as we hate it with a vengeance.

There are a couple of problems.

Climate change feels so huge that it can be overwhelming.

There is enough doubt falsely introduced by the fossil fuels industry to make people not change their behaviours.

Because it's not an obviously visible threat, it's easy to ignore.

This kind of misleading narrative doesn't help either.

Well we went on an energy saving drive when we moved 300miles to our big ole draughty house as we knew our bills where going to be high as the house is four times the size of our previous one.

It was actually cheaper due to location access to sell most of our large belongings & buy new once we got here. First was the easy stuff, renewed goods had to be A++++ rated. Low energy lighting everywhere. push timer light switches in the hall & landing (kids huh)

Then onto the house structure itself, insulated walls, roof, loft, oil heating pulled out & a full ASHP put in with new pipework & radiators. Latest things are a small solar array & a leased EV.

Were they done to save the climate? nope not one thought entered our heads on climate, We did the math on rates of return/immediate savings & said yes or no to measures to reduce our outgoings & in one case the savings are paying the bank loan to install them so in effect they are free now & all profit once the loan is paid.

We will now use approx £1000py to supply the heat & hot water to our home compared to using 3500ltrs of oil (roughly £3400 today). The car saves us £200pm but we have gone from a large 4x4 to a medium sized EV as well so that’s part of the saving & we went EV because our driving habits & annual mileage have changed since moving, if we had to use public charging more than two or three times a year we would not have got one.

Next up will be getting hold of a VtoH charger unit, which for anyone working from home or with an EV on the drive most of the time could be a game changer. Look it up.

All the above are seen as “Green” measures as they cut energy use & ergo emissions but in reality our first priority is “Will it lower our monthly outgoings or benefit us financially longer term?”.

Helping the climate (if we have at all) is an added bonus.

Is Rishi going to U-turn on Truss’s commitment to expand licensing of oil and gas despite it going against experts’s advice? Probably not.

Plenty of people are changing lifestyle I think. I would say even the rise in plant based diets and vegetarianism is one example. I am pretty people in cities use public transport more though this I need to fact check. But the Government continue to not give enough of a shit which is sad.

As well as many great ideas above on how to reduce consumption, the biggest and easiest one of all is simply not to procreate.

That cuts your family tree dead in its tracks, resulting in tens, hundreds and thousands of other people further down the generations not contributing to climate change.

It is by far the biggest change you can make.

"

There were probably labour shortages when the 1st Pyramid was going to be built. Until someone realised they needed more labour and had to widen their search.

I expect The Titanic needed more labour when it was being built than originally first expected too.

Putin needs more labour to prosecute his special military operation. More than he first intended anyway.

So predicting "labour shortages" is a bit like warning people the sun is going to come up tomorrow. There are always going to be labour shortages.

Labour flexes and changes, based on demand and supply.

But the bottom line is less population reduces human-impact and consumption of resources. That feeds directly in to environmental impact.

Imagine you are at the top of a pyramid, and you drill down 10 generations of children below you and think of the impact all those people will have on the planet. It's colossal.

Actually it's very serious, the more so because we don't truly understand how close we are to the 'tipping point' when irreversible damage to our planet happens. Could be years, could be decades, but for sure we are sleepwalking to the precipice. Once the dominoes of nature start falling, that's the end for homo sapiens (Hoorah!! says every other living organism).

Being fatalistic for moment, should we just accept that the climate is rapidly approaching the point of no return and plan accordingly? Maybe we should be pouring resources into methods for surviving in a new, hotter world? I don't know what form that would take, perhaps underwater cities? Underground settlements? Domed colonies? Desalination plants? Geothermal energy? Fusion plants (the technology is closer than you think.)?

The majority of those that laugh at climate change do so because of the highly likely chance they won't be around once it becomes an issue. It's a none issue because its a none issue for them, if they don't see or witness it as a danger they have no reason to worry or do anything that changes comfortable lives they are living.

So to them the tipping point is of little to no concern, everyone alive at that point just needs to deal with it essentially.

It also fucks up the modern economic model. The one where we draw down huge debts on the promise of future generations paying in taxes and student loans etc.

Shrinking work force = less taxes.

Sooner or later this has to change but it's another one of those 'won't happen while I'm alive' problems, so we pretend it's not happening.
