Naught really, never understood patriotism. That is not to diminish the acts of generations before, but I don’t think I can claim ownership of either their glories or failings by the sheer random act of being born in a land they once roamed

So many things. Our musical history, fashion designers, artists, museums, football clubs, writers, scientists. As a tiny Island in the middle of the North Alantic that had been conquered a fair few times, we have achieved so much. Everyone wants to focus on the dark parts of our history without accepting that loads of what we have now was because of then. We learned from our mistakes and tried to right wrongs.

We have the luxury of so many liberties that many do not have globally.

I'm proud of Bowie and Westwood (viv not tim) and Gaiman and The clash and Hockney and Hurst and Hitchcock.

Trust me I'm far from being a flag waving EDL cunt but sometimes is time to take a step back and appreciate Britian is kinda great.

Yes, the island is managed by a bunch of rich, thieving scumbags but they do not represent the people.

It's just simple, little things that make a difference. We have a blood donation service rather than blood banks that pay for blood. We give the gift of life rather than expect a cash reward.

Our NHS was such an awesome concept. I don't hold out much hope for its future but so many millions of people owe their lives and existence to it. In many places if you don't have money you die.

I agree with cinnamon, they may not always be perfect but our public services are the envy of most country’s.

There are always going to be problems and room for improvement but the vast majority of people live in country’s where a lot of the basic amenity’s we complain about, they don’t even have full stop.

The vast majority of people who work for the government go to work and do an amazing job in extremely difficult circumstances. And each day that they do an amazing job they don’t get mentioned in the news and they just go along unnoticed and unappreciated. I promise it’s not all doom and gloom if we allow ourselves to look past the constant bad news stories constantly thrust upon us

English is a germanic language. Scots Gaelic is from Old Irish.

Scots was taken by settlers to Ulster during the 16th century.

So, I have lived in the UK for much longer than anywhere else and I have dual citizenship, one being British.

Having lived here this long, there are many things to be "proud of" for example the NHS, the British sense of humour, Shakespeare, Elgar, the stoic way with which we deal with crises and the list goes on.

I could name as many (different, of course) reasons to be proud of my other identity.

If "pride" is meant to be a sense of happiness with some achievements and with being part of a culture then I am proud to be British.

If it is about a sense of patriotism based on some former military glory, then that does not sit right with me.

Perhaps it would be more helpful to see it as pride in one's identity, which includes culture, customs etc rather than nationality which would include politics as well, and therefor not quite so great at the moment?

I am also European... by cultural identity.

Does this resonate with anybody?

"Correct me if I'm wrong.

"

That's incorrect.

The EU only made about 3% of the fiscal descions that effected Scotland directly prior to Brexit.

32% of fiscal descions were made by Scot Gov in Edinburgh and the remaining 65% by UK Gov at Westminster.

Following Brexit the spilt on Fiscal descions is now 34% Scot Gov / 66% UK Gov.

Under Indy going back into EU the split would be 97% of fiscal descions being made by Scot Gov and 3% by EU.

But surely it is not meant to be a race to the bottom?

Also, I do not understand the embarrassment really because there are many things that we get right as a nation despite our current political landscape.

"Correct me if I'm wrong.

But if/when Scotland gets its independence, won't it immediately hand all its newly gained powers straight over to Brussels ??

That's incorrect.

The EU only made about 3% of the fiscal descions that effected Scotland directly prior to Brexit.

32% of fiscal descions were made by Scot Gov in Edinburgh and the remaining 65% by UK Gov at Westminster.

Following Brexit the spilt on Fiscal descions is now 34% Scot Gov / 66% UK Gov.

Under Indy going back into EU the split would be 97% of fiscal descions being made by Scot Gov and 3% by EU. "

So why the clamour to rejoin the EU anyway ?

Nothing. I'm British (or Scottish) by default, not by choice. I'm proud of things I choose or that I accomplish.

I've never understood the idea of patriotism: you're only the nationality you are because of bloodline or because that's where your parents happened to be 9 months after they fucked

My guess would be because England was conquered by the Norman’s yet The Normans were never able to penetrate very deep into Scotland. The Normans eventually gave up the idea of conquering Scotland but yet due to English rule Scotland was subjected to laws and land changes by those south of the border. Something that hasn’t really changed over the years

There is nothing to get over as Scotland was never conquered far from it if you know your history.

Union of Crowns 1603 - Scottish Monarch James Stuart IV became King of England and Scotland after Death of Elizabeth Tudor.

Union of Parliaments 1707 - Scottish Parliament merged with English / Welsh Parliament.

There was no conquering just a political union.

"I could never understand ethnic or national pride because, to me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish, being Irish isn’t a skill. It’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn’t say, “I’m proud to be 5’11”. I’m proud to have a predisposition for colon cancer. So, why the fuck would you be proud to be Irish or proud to be Italian or American or anything? Hey, if you’re happy with it, that’s fine. Do that. Put that on your car. “Happy to be an American.” Be happy. Don’t be proud. Too much pride as it is. Pride goeth before a fall. Never forget Proverbs, OK?"

"So many things.

Despite all the negativity here about our little nation that punches far above its weight, when travelling, no one ever asks “where” as a follow up question to “where are you from?” It often sparks curiosity or even familiarity from them.

As for Brexit, we have our own little club called The Commonwealth. It isn’t simply a remnant of a colonial past and we are but one member of it, not THE member. We even have ex-French colonies, Gabon and Togo, who left the French ex-colonial club, La Francophonie to join The Commonwealth in June.

We are third in the World for AI research and development with USA and China being bigger. That makes us, pretty much, a superpower in a field that already plays a huge part in our lives.

….and so on….

It's very hard to answer this question,

as from my POV and ive got no possitive comments. Our society is a wannabe one full of fake people trying to be something they aren't. A government, across all parties willing to bully and backstab each other, instead of working as a team for the benefit of all.

And we live in a country where you can't walk down a street or doesn't pass someone who doesn't reak of the stench of . And unfortunately much more, we arent as good as we used to be or think we are.
