"When you were younger? Or more recently?"
When younger I did, now I just enjoy terrorfiying the older kids that are still going out and handing out treats to all the little ones that come round with parents in tow |

No, I didn't. I don't think my Mum and Dad trusted the area we grew up in so didn't want me being out too late at night. Always decorate the windows and have sweets for the kids these days though |

No back in the day it was called 'Guising' in Scotland. Trick or treating is an american thing.
We still have kids knocking the doors at Halloweeen round our way but the expectation is the tell a joke, sing a sing or do a trick.... and then they get some sweets.
Older kids (teens) not in fancy dress chapping the door and saying trick or treat are told to f... off..... |

No, I've never been trick or treating myself but I've always taken my children. We didn't celebrate Halloween when I was a child but I love it and have made up for it as an adult and with my children.

as I have never lived in the USA trick or treating has never been a thing. Let's keep it that way.

I don't think we ever did Halloween in the 70's. The first time I was really aware of it was watching ET for the first time when I was about 10. I still don't get it but the kids in the family absolutely love it. (Mrs K) |

Well to be fair I did... But I'm like Yoda old so costume was mostly a bin bag, those plastic fangs, false red painted false fingers, and a £1 witches hat. Always had a carved turnip though as my folks are Scottish (tight), and pumpkins were yet to be invented... Had a neighbour in my street that was a dentist and used to hand out those mini freebie tubes of toothpaste (not a popular house)... My childhood was mint I know |

"Yes, I went until I was 15 "
Then came Fright Nights at Thorpe Park.
Then came getting paralytic in slutty costumes.
Now I just sit at home waiting for the bell to ring and go "Oh myyyyy, aren't you a scary witch" to blank 4yo faces waiting for their handful of Celebrations |

I did last year. My godson (6 yes old) is autistic and hates fancy dress but wanted to go trick or treating. He had a buzz light year costume but was refusing to wear it. So I bought the adult version, dressed up and took him. The joy on his face was worth the embarrassment of looking like I had a giant purple condom on y head! |

I threw a Halloween party for my daughter and her mates when they were like 8... I filled a large (clean) plastic bin with apples, and diluted blackcurrant juice for them to Bob for prizes (nothing seedy )... Thought it'd be great fun?!... All were horrified |

Gone and completely forgotten. |
As Gushygash said above we went guisin', with home made costumes, a lame joke to tell, and a lantern carved out of a tumshie. (Swede). You got fruit, nuts, and if you were luck, penny caramels.

Never did when I was younger as my parents very much thought of it as begging and I never really asked too.
Used to take my kids but only to houses with pumpkins, however one year we did the same, saw a pumpkin, rang the bell, guy looked like he was coming to the door and then went and sat on the sofa, really made me think twice. |

Only to my grandparents, aunts, and next door neighbours houses, my parents thought it was begging.
We would get dressed up in bin bags and a witches hat, with a carved turnip and visit the three mentioned places. |

No never.
Never wanted my kids to miss out so myself and a few friends made our houses safe spaces for each others children and would only go to those houses on Halloween
I love Halloween, I spend a fortune on sweets as I love seeing the little ones dressed up |

I used to go with my daughter. First time was a pile of crap as we went on my estate and it was full of god bothering killjoys who tried to give the kids lectures about the evil of the devil?!!!
Next year we went to the posh houses in Stokey and made out like bandits.
When people would as to see our trick we would open a basket to reveal our pet Trantula or snake.
Good times, she's too old now but is always bringing up the memories. Once a guy opened the door in a proper "chewbacca" costume holding a tub of celebrations |

Never. My parents considered it akin to begging. Plus I was an incredibly shy child who hated walking up driveways and knocking on doors, even for people I knew. Plus I hate fancy dress.
I still don't really like Halloween and ignore it in the main. We have much more fun at Easter |

Never, but Halloween wasn't such a big thing when I was a kid. It's only relatively recently it's really taken off, to me at least.
The whole trick or treat deal is a recent American import as far as I'm concerned, it's another way to wring cash out of us. We're the one's being tricked. |

Yes, sometimes depending on how my mum was feeling.
I did enjoy it. And I want my daughter to do it too so she can experience it and not feel like she's missing out. But I'm always a bit unsure of how I really feel about it. We always teach our kids to never take food from strangers, then we knock on doors asking for it.
I had some weird experiences too knocking on doors as a kid! When they would invite me in, make me sing and stuff lmaooo luckily nothing too bad but you know.
I do love Halloween, but yeah, not so sure on the trick or treating bit.

No Never, and never for my children either.
You'd be surprised how recent it is .
All Hallows Eve was celebrated with your family in your own house or you went to your parents friends house for a get together.
We played duck apple and you kept the apple you got ...
We played catching hanging oranges on strings... again hands behind back , mouth only.
We told spooky stories and jokes.
we ate seasonal food.....
We KNEW it was about celebrating lost loved ones......
Now it's horrible. Expensive costumes for kids ..... expectations that strangers and people they've not had the time of day for all year will suddenly just give them sweets ......
What beats me is their parents think it's a traditional thing... and allow it.
Oh .... we also celebrated in our own neighbourhoods.

And as for pumpkins ...... fuff me .... they farm them here now and people pay over the mark for them then cut them up n chuck them out cos ......... cos why ? |

Well to be fair, we would do most of that stuff too. It's not just about going out to houses. I like the home part too, movies, snacks and playdate with a friend.
I only ever knock on doors with decorations up as I kind of take that as they are interested in celebrating. I wouldn't ever knock on doors with nothing up. It's worked well so far. But I am undecided on how I feel about it. I want her to experience it at least once though and she is excited about it.
I will knock on your back door if I come around don't worry. |

I don’t mind doing a pumpkin Granny, the innards are put out for the wee small animals, and the seeds dried and toasted, when the night is over, the pumpkin goes out the back for small woodland creatures to make an edible home of (that could happen).
As I live in a little village, I just put a bowl of sweets out the front, next to the pumpkins for the kids to take, without knocking the door. The rule in the village seems to that if you have decorations outside your house the kids can call. |
