So, my car is out of action and it's going to take a while to fix, in the meantime I have bought a snotter of a Peugeot 206 cheap, just to use temporary
Pros;
It's clean
Mileage is 48k
Cons
It's automatic transmission. I've never driven an automatic Car and not overly impressed but in my present situation beggars can't be choosers....
So, my dear Fabbers, tell me; what so you drive?
And what's your take on autos??

I don't drive, because I don't need to: bus stop a minute away, train station 7 minutes away, and work a bucolic 15 minute countryside walk. When I did, my last car was a gorgeous 20 year old dark blue Golf soft-top. A brilliant car.
And I'm sorry to say that I loathe automatics. I choose my own gears depending on the situation. Besides, I'd worry about accidentally slamming on the brakes/accelerator. |

We have one manual car and one auto. The Auto is easier to drive, it may not be fast but we don't drive to race anyway. |

I'm not driving at the moment but I've always driven manual when given the choice; I just don't have the same feeling of being in control in an automatic. Not that I'm a controlling personality type but I'd rather the tonne-and-a-half vehicle I'm driving did exactly what I wanted it to do at all times.
By far the worst vehicles are "semi-automatics" or "clutchless manuals". Try parallel-parking one of those on a hill... |

I have always driven manuals and much like yourself, found myself with an automatic, as a temporary measure, when my car broke down.
I've now bought a hybrid (something else I never imagined I would own) which is automatic and I do love it. Even more so when you slip it into sport mode and it drives like a demon.

I love driving a manual car... my last car was an auto which was good in stop start traffic, meant you didn't get a sore clutch leg... lol. I now drive an electric car which has either forwards or reverse... no gear box... I do like the electric car although I miss my 6 speed gearbox... |

A mate lent me his 2.8 Granada once when he was abroad for 6 months, it was an automatic, I hardly ever drove it |

Have an auto qashqai at the moment, I have driven a mix of both throughout my life and have to say the modern auto boxes are so much better than the old ones I dont think I would go back now and if I want to be silly I can always switch it to manual select. |

Always had Manuals. Driven a few autos and find them a bit too... disconnected? Relaxing maybe? Mind you, Lexus' and Mercs would kind of be a lot more comfy than my ageing VW... |

I parallel my manual all over the place, controlling the clutch with my middle finger only. It's really easy. |

I teach manual but have an automatic for my personal car… however I wouldn’t be surprised if in 5-10 years more people will just go for the automatic option as electric cars become the norm…
At some stage I’ll have to decide whether to carry on teaching how to use a clutch, as there’ll still be a demand while the second hand market still supplies manuals |

And if u like to feel it bite the corners a bit more racy , u can do manual control switch to semi - automatic
Even on automatic is good reaction enough for 1.5 diesel
Someone who wants automatic but is gonna kiss the manual ? I recommend get something with “ semi-automatic option
And u just gear up n down no clutching .
I never bother with semi automatic
Just the effort of roundabouts every 1 yard is off putting
Specially in traffic where u barely put the second or even third gear ….

I do love a manual, as it allows me to relive my boy racer youth.
But for ease (and now speed) I will stick with an auto. Especially when hitting traffic (hello m5/m6) |

I have had a mixture of manual and auto. New automatic gearboxes are brilliant, easy to drive and no real performance impact in newer cars. I’ve got a 7speed DSG in my Cupra and it’s spot on. |

DSG, so automatic with paddles on the steering wheel to change gear if you want. You wont bother but the feeling you can satisfies the control. And no clutch to bother with. |

Luckily I won't be driving long distance in it, literally using it for work, not sure I'd want to drive it to Scotland....

So I drive a manual (with winter tyres part the year) as I would not get home some days otherwise. |

Yeah . That’s it . All HGV2 are dropping to automatic . Isn’t it ? Thanks God for that .
Doing dustcart in Central London ( Trafalgar Square , Piccadilly ) glad all Dennis are automatic
So much easier compare to manual tippers in Wembley . Pain .

But a sadev sequential gearbox will run you about 10-20k and need rebuilding ever 2-3k miles one down side to sequential gearbox’s |

That's the point...you have a clutch so on a hill you can engage the clutch and control the speed with gravity (i.e. letting the car roll downhill) and use the brake to control your speed/descent.
That's very hard to do when you don't have a clutch nor a "Neutral" position for semi-automatic mode. I couldn't work out a way that didn't involve giving it some beans from the engine without using fully-automatic mode which would require turning the engine off.
This was an N-reg BMW 7 series I had use of for a week. It was the boss's "old" car (he had a brand-spanking-new W-reg) that I was given use of when my own car failed it's MOT. Nice to sit in (and be seen in)...a ballache to drive. |

I’ve driven auto and manual - I prefer auto. It’s a much smoother and stress free drive. I wouldn’t go back to manual by choice but my current car has the option to switch to manual if I chose.

Yes you can EAG USA tuneing company will sell you a brand new one with a manual transmission but it’s dubble the mark up
You basically go to them place a order thay will then sorce your car from farrari or other low miles ones that have been bought to sell on then they will swap out the gearbox and then but a tax stamp on it for dubble the price |

Thank you. I am hoping so, was going to sell it once it became surplus but thinking of keeping it, my Corsa is super cheap which will offset the cost of a 2nd car |

I drive a van mainly.
As for autos- there and automatics and automatics.
An old basic Pug isn't going to be anywhere near as good as the autobox on something like a Jag, Bentley or a Porsche Tiptronic....or even one of the newer cars, which have improved greatly in smoothness, reliability and economy.
Also, poor maintenance can massively reduce the quality of use. I did a flush and change on the transmission fluid on my Jag and it totally changed the drive |

I think you’ll find they all have the option of switching to the manual paddle shift mode.
They have an auto box because most people who can afford to buy a new Ferrari don’t have the driving ability to use a manual in a high horse power car. |

Not from the factory as a standard car. You could convert most cars but the point is ferrari don’t make them as they are not as fast and the whole point was that auto cars now are faster than a manual. |

Really just depends
If it’s stock you will have a kick down lag but it will kick down at some point like in 300 to 400 milliseconds
If it’s not stock and your running some 2-3-4 speed power drag transmission
The kick down will be faster than any human is capable off |

Same here but tend to use the gear selector as opposed to the paddles feels more "normal ". 7 speed with sport option |

Small engined cars don't lend themselves well to automatic gearboxes (transmissions is fast & furious yank speak BTW). They don't have the torque or rev range to suit that type of box. Now before the pedants start piping up about 8 speed autos that preselect the gear above and below for you etc - small engined, cheap motors don't have that kind of box. Usually a three speed with overdrive and a low spec, low tech, cheap assed three speed at that.
I've driven some cracking auto's and had the same car in both manual and auto a few times the 530D manual was a far better drive than the 535D auto ever was but the manual Aristo I had was beaten hands down by the auto version I had.
Individual cars need judging in their own rights and I wouldn't go judging all automatics by a 206 unless you are going to use it as an example of about as shit as an auto box can be! |

I’ve got autos and manuals
But without a doubt it’s my semi auto bmw with either paddle or stick change
Can cruise in lazy drive mode or get a bit fruity with the paddle shift
Best of both worlds

"Small engined cars don't lend themselves well to automatic gearboxes (transmissions is fast & furious yank speak BTW). They don't have the torque or rev range to suit that type of box. Now before the pedants start piping up about 8 speed autos that preselect the gear above and below for you etc - small engined, cheap motors don't have that kind of box. Usually a three speed with overdrive and a low spec, low tech, cheap assed three speed at that.
I've driven some cracking auto's and had the same car in both manual and auto a few times the 530D manual was a far better drive than the 535D auto ever was but the manual Aristo I had was beaten hands down by the auto version I had.
Individual cars need judging in their own rights and I wouldn't go judging all automatics by a 206 unless you are going to use it as an example of about as shit as an auto box can be! "
I'm pretty confident there's been no new car for sale for a good few years with a 3 speed auto. Not even sure the last time I saw a 4 speed auto for that matter.
But agreed some cars are far better with autos and others with manual. |

By far the worst vehicles are "semi-automatics" or "clutchless manuals". Try parallel-parking one of those on a hill...

Really just depends
If it’s stock you will have a kick down lag but it will kick down at some point like in 300 to 400 milliseconds
If it’s not stock and your running some 2-3-4 speed power drag transmission
The kick down will be faster than any human is capable off "

What I found today was that I think cars will lose the mirrors .
Today on M1 I noticed that the big HGV1 didn’t had them big mirrors .
Had only little “ ears “ sticking out with a camera.
Wich will give you a much faster control as you will have the 3 views only in 1
Loved The idea of the mirrors image in dash board in your face as you look straight .
I believe cars will lose the mirrors .
With the love they have for more technology and us with more crap to go wrong ?

I've driven a few vehicles with camera mirror systems. It's definitely the in thing, and quitw common on buses as well as HGVs. I can see the advantages - less wind resistance and less large mirrors to damage on HGVs and coaches, plus reduced number of mirror-versus-street furniture accidents for buses in cities.
But... It brings your focus to a point inside the vehicle rather than outside, so you lose some of what you'd see in your peripheral vision when checking a mirror, and you lose depth perception in a monitor. Some do have lines superimpised the same as reversing cameras, which helps but does feel a bit like a solution to a problem that wasn't there until technology made it one, if that makes sense.
There's also the loss of the fringe benefit that in a mirror, you can often see the driver (of a large vehicle) and better gauge whether he's seen you alongside/behind.
Back to the original question though, I prefer a manual car. Give me an automatic gearbox on a bus or coach any day. But for a car, all the auto boxes I've driven have seemed less good than I can achieve with my left foot. Manoeuvring on a hill, for example, where they are often a bit 'nothing...nothing...more revs...nothing...more revs...off we suddenly go'

My daily driver is a jeep renegade trailhawk. It's fun to drive the others but I do love my renegade. If I get the urge to shift I just put it into manual mode. |

Yes in town mirrors is an head hacke .
But I loved the big HGV2 mirrors . Is so much easier then drive a car .
Then back to my Yaris to go back home as just like : WTF ? Couldn’t see anything ^^

Drive and prefer to drive manuals, but no major objections to autos so long as they have paddle shift too. Bottom line if it continues as is expected and the internal combustion engine is phased out, manual vehicles will be phased out with it, so going to have to get over it and get used to it regardless.
I've stopped caring quite so much when it comes to cars, but I'll be holding on to my petrol motorbikes til they pry then from my cold, dead hands! |

When I need a new daily runner I go to auto trader and look at snotters with a years MOT. My current is a 20yr old focus 1.6 auto - it took a while getting used to it but I have had it for 4 years and it runs like a dreams.
I always had this idea that auto’s were not ‘real’ cars, but it is easy and simple to drive and goes the job. I will happily get another auto when I need a new car. |

Modern automatic all the way... But while it's under warranty because they can be massively expensive to repair when out of that period.
It's essential to maintain them by having fluids replaced, something unfortunately many owners are oblivious too, particularly buying one second hand when service schedules are less apparent |

635d was hard to find a decent one manual in this country.
Smart roadster don't do manual at all. E39 Agean blue don't have manual either.
Finally the car I have now.. still rwd and electric. So no chance of being manual.
All the auto above (besides the electric) could be used in "manual" mode. Not as engaging but still fun to drive. |

I can only drive automatics. I did my lessons in a manual but it was all too much. I felt like there’s enough to take focus on in front of my face without the added element of gear changing in the mix.
I don’t enjoy driving though. It’s literally for necessity.

I've driven both (currently manual) and there are pros and cons. I think you'll get used to automatic after a while and come to like it. You might notice that automatic transmission does take some of the power from the engine. It's good to be able to drive both especially if you go places like the US where manual is rare. In any case, EV are essentially automatic so we'll all have to get use to it |

Better fuel economy (but I do travel a lot) and a lot less to go wrong. I drive lots of vehicles daily and the majority are auto but when there is a problem and it doesn’t have to be with the box they really are problems. If it is a gear related issue then the cost is very expensive. |

I used to always go manual, but my last 4 cars have always been autos. Most come with paddles these days so you can put it in sport and sill take control of the change. But seeing as driving is not what it was 20 years ago and a lot of thebtime you're stuck in traffic or cruising on a motorway I'd not go back to manual. Modern auto boxes are nothing like the shockers of yesteryear |

I drive an auto now. But it's a modern DCT so the shifts are seemless. Round town, in traffic, the auto is king.
For a B road blast...I'll take a clutch peddle. Unfortunately I don't get to do much B road blasting haha |

Current car is only available as an 8 speed auto, with flappy paddles plus sports and dynamic
mode, but hardly ever use it.

" they are money pits I bought a vauxhall insignia paid £3000 for it it developed a DPF problem so took it to garage they said they'd take DPF filter out of exhaust clean it put it back in I could have car back at end of day so took day off work £200 went back to collect car nothing done so they said they would do it that evening get it back after 12 next day another day off work £200 went back about 4pm to collect car they said another part needed to be replaced so £120 for the part so the garage charged me £600 and the car was exactly the same as when I took it in, now I googled the chemical cleaner they use to clean filter it's a foam cleaner so you have to replace oil and oil filter which I had already done cost me £46 but they squurted the chemical in through the llamba sensor, so didn't take it out of exhaust and didn't replace oil or filter so the next day driving down road car stalls over heating, phoned garage we'll get our tow truck to tow vehicle to garage couldn't do it that night we'll get it first thing in morning so I arrive at car 8am tow truck turns up at 1pm tows car back to garage, water pump snapped off and snapped timing belt car is scrap, do I have any recourse? |

I have an auto and no regrets. It’s got enough torque not to get caught in the wrong gear.
The modern twin clutch autos are really snappy, if sometimes a bit jerky, and you don’t pay a fuel economy penalty.
Tech has come on a long way. Unless you actively enjoy hillstarts there isn’t much of a downside. |

As a former racing driver and track instructor, I always advocated a manual box; my own cars being manual. That was until I was instructing with a paddle shift gearbox, WOW. The control, speed and cornering ability was mind blowing. For non track driving and lazy days the system returns to a normal auto box. Auto boxes are now so clever and will learn your driving style. Best gearbox by far, Porsche PDK twin clutch. |

I drive an auto that has a manual stick option. Learning accelerator control is your friend in an auto as you can make the shifts very smooth, and regardless of what people say, you can drive in the snow.
It’s just a different way of driving that requires more right foot thinking than left foot thinking. |

Unless I have completely got the wrong end of the stick, a paddle shift isn’t actually an ‘automatic ‘ is it.
You are still determining when the change happens and to which gear. It’s just clutchless.

Auto.
I like using only my right foot. On a motorway, set to cruise control and rest your foot.
In town, set the ‘limiter’ and you need not worry about speeding or to constantly check the speedometer.
I am not a race driver. I use a car for my own space to get me from one place to another. I don’t see the need to work hard to do it.

Personally I prefer manual, however most European countries now will mainly have automatic cars, that and the fact of electric cars are automatic maybe we should all be embracing Automatic cars soon? |

I hired a Volvo XC40 when I was in Holland earlier this year. Absolutely lovely car, and an automatic, really got in to driving it, until negotiating roundabouts, which was fucking awful, because there was no gearstick……

both drive Autos and would never go back to a manual, except our bikes.
Problem with modern manuals is they have dual mass flywheel which are unreliable and often when the clutch goes the flywheel neds replacing and around £500 for one most cars would be a right off

I can't stand Automatics, not because I'm some driving purist who feels the need to think I'm a great driver who knows how to change gear better than the car does, but just because I'm so used to manual, that if I ever drive an auto I have to literally sit on my left foot to stop me doing an emergency stop when muscle memory makes he go for the invisible clutch. Also, they are heavier, more expensive to service, more expensive to buy, not as fuel efficient, and if you are a driving purist bore, don't perform as well. |

Manual - You can really feel like you are "driving".
I wouldn't budge on this, until I got my new car however, which is Auto.

I always took the view of "automatic. Ewwww" but now I have one I honestly wouldn't choose to go back.
Also, electric and hybrids will be automatic as far as I am aware, so something else to think about |

Modern autos are great. Got a 7 speed, with flappy paddles for when I fancy a bit of fun.
Older autos are a bit depressing tbh, 3/4 speed clunkers |

Manual on most car's.. however I'm awaiting a knee op on my left knee and an automatic would probably be a better option... yet I still got manual in my new car..
I had an automatic in my old range rover v8 and my lwb pajero. Also had semi automatic as I had silly speed ( selespeed ) alfa
However I drive a lot and miss manual when I don't have that optional. Something very satisfying in banging my car up and down the box and I use engine breaking a lot x |

Drove manual cars from passing 15 or so years ago but 2 year ago I got myself a Mercedes C-Class which is automatic and I love it!
Don't think I could go back no manual now, automatic is more smooth relaxing to drive I think.
You'll get used to the automatic and you might even want to keep it or get another automatic. |

I've had so many cars it's hard to count them and most have been manual had maybe 3 Autos that I liked to drive but when I changed I always seemed to go back to manuals.
Drive manuals all day long with work and over the last couple of years I've only got electric Autos at home
(wife's MG and my Leaf)
Can honestly say I won't go back to fossil fuel and definitely no more manuals outside of work |

I’ve spent the majority of my 35+ year driving career in manual cars. I have driven many autos in that time but they tend to be a bit frustrating it can’t be denied that they are a lot easier to drive but it’s adding an element of complexity between you and what you want the car to do.
However I now drive an electric car these don’t have gears and they are a revelation. Especially because electric motors don’t have to spin up to get any power out of them. There is no need for kick down you just plant your right foot and it goes like a stabbed rat.

Modern autos are very reliable os it's IF they go wrong rather than when a dual mass fails, my Bclass has 14000 on the clock and only ever had regular oil changes, Marie's C max the dual mass failed at 35000 |

I have a beautiful SLK automatic, nearly 8 years old now only done 14k to date.
The first one I had was manual so glad I changed, never having driven automatic before . Found it really easy and less stressful on my arthriticky fingers . Would not go back to manual now . |

they are money pits I bought a vauxhall insignia paid £3000 for it it developed a DPF problem so took it to garage they said they'd take DPF filter out of exhaust clean it put it back in I could have car back at end of day so took day off work £200 went back to collect car nothing done so they said they would do it that evening get it back after 12 next day another day off work £200 went back about 4pm to collect car they said another part needed to be replaced so £120 for the part so the garage charged me £600 and the car was exactly the same as when I took it in, now I googled the chemical cleaner they use to clean filter it's a foam cleaner so you have to replace oil and oil filter which I had already done cost me £46 but they squurted the chemical in through the llamba sensor, so didn't take it out of exhaust and didn't replace oil or filter so the next day driving down road car stalls over heating, phoned garage we'll get our tow truck to tow vehicle to garage couldn't do it that night we'll get it first thing in morning so I arrive at car 8am tow truck turns up at 1pm tows car back to garage, water pump snapped off and snapped timing belt car is scrap, do I have any recourse?
Why on earth did you have it towed back there?? " well because I had paid them £600 so I'm buggered either way lost £4000 on a scrap car lol |

I have only driven an auto once, I hated the experience. When ever I used the brakes, the car still would try to drive. |

"As a former racing driver and track instructor, I always advocated a manual box; my own cars being manual. That was until I was instructing with a paddle shift gearbox, WOW. The control, speed and cornering ability was mind blowing. For non track driving and lazy days the system returns to a normal auto box. Auto boxes are now so clever and will learn your driving style. Best gearbox by far, Porsche PDK twin clutch.
Unless I have completely got the wrong end of the stick, a paddle shift isn’t actually an ‘automatic ‘ is it.
You are still determining when the change happens and to which gear. It’s just clutchless.

Paddle shifts are just a means to select the gears manually rather than letting the gearbox do its own thing. Automatics come in two forms, traditional autos with torque converters and twin clutch boxes so definitely not clutchless. Both will operate in fully auto mode but can allow you to select the gears for yourself, some will allow you to bounce off the rev limiter others will change up at the red line even when in 'manual' mode. |

I imagine it was as it wasn't a factory option on any of the *35d's - the M57 6 speed was determined by BMW to be unable to handle the torque put out on the twin turbo variants.
