On this site, the term professional when someone is describing themselves covers a wide range of things. Some obviously will be professionals, some just use it to mean they have a job  and others just write it because they have seen others do so.
What do you understand to mean professional? |

Professional to me means different things in different circumstances. Being professional at work means doing your job properly. Being a professional footballer, athlete etc means you earn your living from it. |

The system is set up for us to struggle .. even a highly respected profession such as being a doctor.. you have to spend thousands in education and dedicate years and work long hours just to have a fairly good standard of living.. then you've got a YouTuber who made 500k in less than a year |

To me it means a skilled practitioner; someone who does a job having had an education, special training, which makes them an expert. Examples: surgeon, lawyer, engineer, etc.

It had a great opening sequence, but I preferred The Sweeny as a series, the opening credits of which also had a Granada, though the earlier episodes had a jag if I remember correctly. If my mind wasn’t full of such pointless trivia I too may have been a professional! Well in the original sense of the word which was doctors and lawyers. It turns out I actually am a professional though, as I just looked it up. The UK government has a handy list of regulated professions on the .gov website. It turns out most of us are, from test pilots to HGV drivers to social care workers to teachers and a shed load more.

It is a person who went through considerable training and education and passed exams in order to belong to a recognised profession.
Professionals come from all walks of life.
I have seen people with professional on their profile and that is their business.
What i've never seen them do is start a thread about people without a professional qualification and encourage others to jeer at them.

I assume they mean married. Professional often comes hand in hand with the need to be discreet. It’s easier to say you’re a professional here than to say you’re married.

I’d say it means they went to college, finished the program with a certificate and title and continued with a successful career. I take it as they also have an office hours job.
Might also mean that in some cases they prefer to keep their fab ‘underworld’ life very private. |

I don't know why, but it always astounds me how much reverse snobbery this word brings out on here.
Surely it just means someone that doesn't think Wetherspoons is a nice place to go for dinner!
I jest, but that is mainly how I've always read it on here, someone that enjoys a certain standard of living and would perhaps want to book a hotel a bit more luxurious than a Travelodge for a meet, or go to a nice cocktail bar for a social rather than the local Yates.
It's just another descriptor to allow you to ascertain compatibility. |

In general I think it means someone who has trained to do a particular job and tends to have to manage people.
On fab, I think it makes "some" people who don't view themselves in professional type job feel insecure. Hence they think they're better than us type of comments. But I've yet to see anyone in a professional job say any such thing on the forum.
Those who use it, I think use it to say they're not available to meet during the day. |

"Professional" in a profile to me indicates that somebody wants to set himself/herself apart from all those who are not "professional" and that is more about aspirations, life style, a certain standard of living, worldliness perhaps education, good manners and being cultured.
It does not mean that they are necessarily professional (lawyer, doctor etc) , neither does it mean that those who do not state it, are not professional either.
In short, it is designed to set themselves apart - I am not saying it is a bad thing, it is just one attribute people use to profile themselves.

Yes; the only thing as irritating and pathetic as snobbery (usually practiced by silly insecure pretentious social climbers who are not really what they pretend to be or aspire to be and never will be) is inverted snobbery, which is sadly more common these days, I think, than traditional snobbery, which fortunately seems increasingly ridiculous and futile. |

Yes, it went well. It was proper debate with lots of valid opinions (and nobody bullying anyone for a different opinion)
I started this one because I wanted to see the difference in the answers from a niche population.
I've done this many times of 10s of different subjects.
However, I will know not to do so next time. |

Yes, a lot of men on here seem to think that everyone else is just sitting around waiting to offer sex on demand at any time to random and usually illiterate and often unattractive men (with a collection of crude cock pictures if anything at all as the only thing they have to say about themselves) just because they send a message saying: 'hi', 'hows you', 'meet now', or if they have literary ambitions: 'hard and horny, need sex' etc.
They may all be unemployed or retired but do they really think that everyone else is, and that no one has anything else to do in their lives except be at their beck and call, or are this high percentage of the men on here really so stupid and arrogant?
A lot of other men are so pathetically puerile and cowardly that they play silly naughty little boys' games, asking for and arranging 'meets' and then disappearing, like ringing doorbells and running away sniggering but frightened (usually the 'Fab straight' type). |

Someone belonging to a profession. So a (Medical) Doctor, Architect, Surveyor, Engineer, lawyer, Pilot, Ships Captain/officers, etc. Someone with a higher level of education and/or training. |

As ever, the thing people generally gravitate to is what people do, not what people are. Ergo:
- Related to work that needs a high level of education or special training. Also, someone who has worked hard in the same type of job for a long time and has become skilled at dealing with any problem that might happen. Then there's using it to describe someone who does a job that people usually do as a hobby.
But there is also the more behavioural part of the description that is often missed when these threads happen:
- Professional also means having the qualities of skilled and educated people, such as effectiveness and seriousness of manner, having the qualities that you connect with trained people, such as being organised and showing a high standard of work:
On Fab, it means, as with EVERY OTHER WORD (Genuine, curvy, girthy, discrete, tall..) whatever the person using it wants it to mean. And to some that will mean people with a career not a job, to others those with a qualifications that gives you letters, and yet to others just that you don't wear your slippers to the supermarket.
If you can't tell the intended usage from someones profile, then either a) their profile is crap, in which case who cares what they mean, or b) they've used it for a reason and if the rest of the their profile doesn't offer hints as to what that is then you're probably not a match either way.

Think it's a mixed bag of people bragging to further inflate their feeling of self importance, people trying to covertly say that they are only interested in others who have a better earning potential and people trying to back up the fact that they are limited for time. Personally I think it's completely irrelevant as this isnt linkedin.  |
