Channel 4 are launching a show which will discuss the paintings or artists like Rolf Harris and Hitler.
The studio audience will decide if the art can be separated from the artist.
If the audience believe that the art should be destroyed then Jimmy Carr will destroy it with a blowtorch.
This is all over the news guys. Can we separate the art from the artist ? |

I've seen some of Hitlers water colours and they were crap. The Chapmam Brothers brought several and painted rainbows on them, I think they called it 'If Hitler had been a Hippy'. But the original pieces were pretty embarrassingly bad |

"Can we separate the art from the artist ?"
Depends entirely on the artist and what they've done in their life.
Those two? Nope. Likewise I'll never have the urge to watch re-runs of Jim'll Fix it, or listen to a Lost Prophets CD.

I mean having seem them in a gallery, I think I can give an opinion. I have no idea whether they were typical of his quality if work but these examples were awful snd i think i have seen enough art to offer an opinion...

I don't like the idea of a television audience deciding what to do with art. I like the idea of Jimmy Carr wielding the blow torch even less.
It's not up to channel four to do this kind of stuff in my opinion |

It's all subjective.
Can I separate the art from the artist. 99% of the time yes.
Can sudden revelations about an artist sour my enjoyment of their art by association, yes.
I certainly won't buy their art though, I won't fund them or anything they did once I know.
I don't think it should be destroyed either. What's the point, it won't change anything. If things were not known about them then their art would still exist and we would be none the wiser, but destroying it won't change what happened.
Imagine if Van Gogh was suddenly revealed to be as vile as Hilter or Rolf Harris. I wonder how many would (I know some would) be up for torching his almost priceless works of art. |

Rolf Harris' work was good, but i don't believe the art should suffer for the sins of the artist. His art does not depict anything abusive or sinister so why should it be burned? I hate waste and destroying art. ISIS showed the world how destroying art is horrific. We don't need to stoop to their level |

Nor me, it's a bit too close to burning books it doesn't sit comfortably with me at all.
The debate is valid, but destroying art in the name of entertainment is wrong |

I've not looked at all the details of the show. I'd guess it's not the originals... But let's assume it is.
Music is a choice to listen/not listen. Which comes down to viewing/appreciating a painting is a choice.
In the case of music, destroying the original means very little in the digital era, where as destroying the original painting is much more impactful in its statement. |

Destroying it with a blowtorch just creates more art. Unless the content of the pictures is buggering boys whilst killing millions, I reckon we can probably separate a portrait of the queen or a landscape from the knobs who made them. 100% of everything we do is not defined by our single worst attribute or action, no matter how bad that is. If all you were defined by the worst thing you did, you'd all be the absolute pits and cancelled in an instant, as would I. |

You realise he oversaw the genocide of 6 million Jews, homosexuals and travelers?
It's not like "he did antisemitism on twitter" it's genocide."
Yes I do realise that. |

ChNnel four was such a good channel when it started with some really good alternative programs.
What it's turned in to is an intellectual wasteland . Are the people of this country really that brain dead they find shows like this and married at first sight and naked attraction good entertainment? |

"To answer the question, I do not personally enjoy the art of terrible people. Like, who listens to R Kelly or Kanye west anymore? "
It’s a conundrum…terrible people but banging tunes…
What do you do with for example… listen to the Jackson five… but don’t listen to him from bad onwards |

Slightly off topic but Rolf was the one that I really didn’t want to believe when first arrested .. of all of the Yewtree lot he was the big “Noooo, not Rolf!”
He visited my school as a kiddie and did a HUGE great mural that was hung up in the main hallway for years afterwards. I’m guessing that’s long since been removed! I wonder where it is now? |

Well neither Rolf or Adolf were great artists which helps. But a huge amount of the great art and science which enriches and eases our lives has been created by bad people. If a plumber puts in great central heating do you rip it out if you hear he's a wrong un ? |

"We own one of his limited prints. Haven't had the heart to get rid of it but it does unfortunately remind you of him.
Has its value increased or decreased ?"
Pretty sure it's decreased. I'm not sure if there's even a market?
We're moving next year so guess we'll get rid of it then one way or the other. |

Now I must get crucified for what I am about to say but Gary Glitter... absolute knob but I still the I'm the leader is a brilliant song (or whatever it's name). I can absolutely listen to it without getting my knickers in a twist. |

I'm the leader of the gang is the song. Only listen to that if it was on in a pub and had no choice. Used to have it as a single but I got rid of all my singles before he was exposed as an abuser antway |

"Who buys this art and why? Where or who does the money go to? If it's any of the artists ancestors then burn the painting as far as I'm concerned. Vile people "
I think you mean descendants. Why are they vile people? Do they share their views, or praise their doings? Not their fault they were born in to such a family tree.
I agree with not supporting these particular artists financially, but to make them out to be bad based upon nothing but a family tree is unfair. Unless they of course are in support of the monster in their family.
Hell if what an ancestor of our own did impacted our own current reputations and judgement of character towards us I don't think many people could ever be considered anything but vile. |

It's not on my playlist or anything, I was just saying I can still listen to it and not connect the two.
With paintings, tbf any of the artist of other famous work could have done anything, some of the best loved pieces, like van Goghs sunflowers, love that painting but if it came out he was a wrongun, wouldn't take anything away from the piece, it's still a beautiful drawing. |
