I usually take a hostess gift. It can vary between chocolates, wine, flowers or some home baking. It all depends on what I think they would appreciate and if I have time to bake.

.

Usually a bottle of something of a quality that I would drink.

We used to have a friend who would bring a bottle of the cheapest crap going and then proceed to drink the champagne, wine and spirits that we had laid on. Eventually I just used to hand the unopened bottle to her on her way out, she got the message

It has to be drinkable!

And if I intend to drink spirits then it should be a spirit, even if it's not one I drink - a decent whisky though I drink vodka is often accepted by my hosts as long as they like whisky.

KFC condiment bags are always well received. Try and take a few so you don't look tight though.

Never arrive empty handed is my moto but saying that I wouldn't be offended if someone turned up at mine with only a smile and a good disposition as its people that make parties in my book.

When I go to a party I always take a bottle or two.

As for meets, a little gift of chocolates often seems well received.

I took flowers once as well... I went past the graveyard on the way anyway so I thought it worth making the effort to stop
