How’re you gonna deal with the winter energy crisis
Jump to: Newest in thread
Ive just put a huge rug in my lounge to cover the wooden floor in a attempt to trap some heat.
Ive turned the thermostat down to 17* to try and get used to being a little cooler.
Ive invested in thermal blankets for the beds and sofas too.
Im going to get everyone slipper socks for around the house and im going to cook everything in the slow cooker
Its all very worrying isnt it. |

First of all waiting to see how much of a crisis it's actually going to be... then:
1. Making appropriate adjustments to afford the higher bills.
2. Thanking fuck that we don't have to worry about Russia killing us overnight (yet)!
3. Layers. |

Waiting on my first updated bill to pop through the door see how bad it is
Been out cutting loads of firewood so will burn the open fire all through winter
Won’t use the gas central heating as I can run nine radiators off the open fire |

Layers people
Invest in long Johns, thermal tops and socks
I got an electric blanket on my desk chair which my daughter now shares with me because I'm not allowed anything to myself.
Also my missus is a one woman heating system
Rugs and throws for the chairs, draught excluders but going back to the top, clothing layers is the keys |

I may end up stopping under the covers in bed when not at work. My Landlord just put my rent up £200 a month on top of energy bill and food prices increase, I am seriously worried about how I will manage financially. |

I’ll wear a long sleeved shirt instead of a T
I’ll put trackie bottoms on instead of shorts
That’s only gonna happen when it’s REALLY cold. Not before then. |

I have moved a TV into my bedroom. Once the kid is in bed I shall be fluffy Disney PJ's and duvets, hot waters bottles and hot coco.
I am also only going to fuck men in a higher wage bracket than me, and only at they're house where I can get naked and they can pay for the heating |

Is this what we are going to do for the next few years?
The bills are never coming down and if anything will go up again under this Government.
Is this really the way to live?
Of course we are making changes, not going out as often for meals, eating meals that require little cooking or non.
Only turning on the tv when it is something we need to watch rather than channel hopping, watching things on our phones rather than the tv.

Is it going up because their costs (mortgage etc) have genuinely gone up or are they taking a chance that you won’t refuse? Are you at a point in your rental agreement where they can legally increase it?

I’ve reinsulated my loft….. twice, it’s now 40cm thick up there which is passed the current uk new build regs, I also dropped all the water out of my heating system and then flushed it all, radiators now much hotter, I’m not fucking anything either, that’s effort |

I think we should all look to taking advantage of daytime collective warth centres. That way we can save on individual bills, national consumption and come together as communities. Chameleons would be a great location, so that where I think I need to be this winter |

Not worried about it as globe warming will keep us nice and warm .
As someone else said its wait and see what actually happens first then react . Be sensible and don't panic . Most of it is scare tactics by the media and energy companies to get more money out of us |

So far our bills have stayed the same (we’ve obviously been paying too much for some time). Latest bill shows we’re in credit which we weren’t expecting.
If we had to, we’d go out less and buy less. Will cross that bridge if and when we have to |

Odeon cinemas do an unlimited monthly pass for £14.99 - could sit there all day, every day (other cinemas are available & might offer similar)
Or
Wetherspoons. Buy 1 hot drink & free refills all day. Take a library book with you. |

I'm going to ask for a refund for my astronomical credit. Might help with other rising costs. lol |

You should be getting £450, it should mean winter costs won’t rise. The £2500 cap is based on household average , I would think most people can use below average without too much pain, unless you have 5/6 bedrooms and a heated pool/hot tub. I’m estimating 150 a month in winter , so 85 after the gov. credit and about 70-80 in summer so it’s higher than it was but not impossible |

Prices have still risen. Just not as much as they otherwise would.
I think it's effectively still doubled since last winter?
We get doubly shafted because we rely on heating oil. |

We are getting Solar and Battery storage installed later this month so will start making our own energy. We are looking at switching to an electric combi boiler when our gas one kicks the bucket and we are going to switch to an induction hob in the kitchen to remove our reliance on gas entirely. |

"You think more people will comit crime just to get locked up?
Get heating and food paid for. "
Part of the reason Australia had such a high Irish population during the colonial period was the potato famine. People committed victimless crimes (arson, setting things on fire in an open field was common) so at least they would be fed. |

I have solar panels which help a lot to keep the cost down.
But im used to keeping warm in the cold. We were really poor when i was young and we couldn't afford to put the heating on. We often had frost on the inside of the windows.
I'll carry on as i always have. Turn off whats not in use. Wear the extra jumper. I'm very good at stretching my money. |

My dad had his fitted in August but is still waiting for a battery!!!
If you remove gas, what would do in a power cut? How much do the batteries store? |

Sounds expensive to install. How long will it take for you to benefit from generating your own energy? |

Average install cost currently for a 3 bed house is £20k plus parts are on short supply currently, SunSync inverters are 6 months wait and that's just one supplier.....also payback is currently about 10-15 years before you start entering benefit...which by then your batteries will need replacing, also national grid is only paying about 4p a unit for your excess |

My dad’s was @£14k for a 4 bed with 17 panels, 2 batteries (although not got them yet!) & the system always heats his water before selling back to the grid.
You still have to be careful with it though & not have too much on at once as then you do incur charges. |

I did say currently. Solar suppliers are increasing component prices at a daily rate due to shortage...6 months ago an average 395W panel was approximately £105. They are now current £150+ and thats if you can even get them |

We have recently looked into this and were told electric boilers as they stand now are really only suitable for small 1 bedroom properties. I'm sure they will get better as the government are already putting things in place to get rid of gas powered central heating but the technology isn't there yet. |

To be honest, it's all a false market place currently. The national grid is struggling to even maintain a steady supply with less than 10% of the nation having electric vehicle chargers and 95% of them are not smart enabled...our infrastructure is lacking any real sustainability |

Maybe cutting down on our habit of opening the windows when it gets a tad hot.
The man who came to service the boiler showed us the button to press to have central heating on for a hour, it's brilliant.
Dressing appropriately.
Closing radiators in rooms we never use.
Wait until I get home before putting heating on.
Use my brain before using boiler.

Based on my energy useage during the corresponding period last year and the prices I have been given for both gas and electricity my 6 monthly cost will be in the region of £550.
A rebate of £400 will be received from my energy provider so my net costs will be around £150, i.e. £25 a month. All figures are subject to VAT at 5%
My electricity supplier is Eon and my gas supplier is Ecotricity. |

Not all that North of North London |
Relatively lucky that I'm in a small flat and blasting the heating on for 10 minutes is enough to warm the whole flat for a few hours. Last winter was only doing around £80 in gas and electricity each month so can thankfully afford to absorb the increase with limited impact. Selfishly, ots not goung to cause me much in the way of problems |

Just a quick update on solar… Contrary to what was said earlier in the thread, Octopus energy now pay 15 pence per unit exported. My 12 kW installation (40 panels)with 10kW hrs of batteries cost 15K last year. Payback time now the energy prices have risen, is in the order of 6 years. Panel warranty is 20 years, batteries and inverters 10 years. To replace the batteries and inverters in 10 years time will probably cost 6k, possibly less as technology will have improved and prices will fall.
Unfortunately due to the energy crisis and the microchip shortage in China the prices of solar installations have gone up quite dramatically this year, and there is a shortage of batteries and inverters at the moment. Most installers are inundated with work and consequently this is pushing up prices even further, so now may not be a good time to buy.. |
