Does anyone watch tv without a tv license?
My kid and friends at Uni has been sent a letter reminding them to get a license if they watch "live" tv.
Is this a scare tactic to get them to buy one?
They dont have a tv only a monitor but can pick up tv from amazon firestick.
Told them if they ask just say you watch Netflix and they cannot enter your property without a court warrant so dont let them in.
Has anyone had the tv license people knock on their doors and what was the outcome?

At Uni, this is definitely a scare tactic. Whether student accommodation or renting etc. In my experience the uni themselves sent out a letter and no one ever checked, visited or got in touch. Bit of a scam really. |

Yes we did, the guy asked did we watch live tv etc told him no, he ask if he could come in to check. I(mrs) said no you don’t have a warrant he said he didn’t need one. I told him yes you do and told him to come back when he has one. Never had anyone back at the door. T |

I got rid of my sky package and my TV aerial. I just use Netflix and other streaming sites and I may or may not have access to a firestick with other apps.
I refuse to pay to watch BBC. |

Just had two very threatening letters from the TV licensing people it seems I've committed the most heinous crime by not renewing my tv license in time

I have 1, as the funding model is simple. Albeit, the government has cut income to the BBC. I'd welcome less well off people being able to pay less.
The private company that chases those without them, are scum, with atrocious tactics. BBC and Channel 4 are great for the UK. |

If you don't watch live TV as its being broadcast you don't need a license. Cancelled mine a couple of years ago and now they only send me a reminder every two years to ask if I need one yet

They say all kinds of things to trick people into buying one. You need one if you’re device is configured and able to receive live TV programs using public infra , even if you never watch them, it’s not really bbc specific. But you also need one for iPlayer because that software is purposely configured that way |

I get those letters as well.
I phoned up an stated I didn’t need a tv license, they send a link to do this on their website.
Be aware of the wording in the letter though, you’re meant to have a tv license if you watch or record live tv from any channel or download / watch BBC programs on iPlayer. |

No even that has changed. You can't watch anything on iplayer even catch up. But you can own a TV that's capable of receiving live TV you just can't watch live TV on it. You can listen to any bbc radio programs though either live or podcast without a license though. I researched this quite a bit before I gave up my license. |

I got rid of the TV license last Feb, but I also got ride of the TV view box, I don’t have a signal in my house so no live TV. I watch Netflix & YouTube.
Universities don’t hold a license that covers every one who has a TV or a device that can pick up streaming, so they are responsible for their own license. If they live in student accommodation & flat share then they should all pay a portion of the license fee.
If they watch live shows on monitors or hand held devices then they still need a license. There are very few apps that you don’t need a license for, like Netflix, YouTube but you cannot watch any live streaming on YouTube only prerecorded. You can’t watch Prime or Now TV without a license as they shoe series that add new episodes weekly.
If you encourage people to just say they’re watching Netflix, then you & they are breaking the law. Unless the house address is on the TV Licensing database as being listed as not needing a license then they will be monitored & visited and they could be charged.
The only people who can get a court warrant is the police & those who work for the courts - ie Bailiffs (not Scotland) |

It's a scare tactic and very shady. Hubby had a letter shoved under his door when he stayed in halls for the first year when he was at Uni years ago.
No need for a license in university unless you are using BBC iPlayer or actually watching live TV as it is broadcast. We don't watch live TV ourselves either so don't have one at home and neither of us has paid for one in our life. |

The old concept of the TV licence is outdated; I rarely watch television nowadays, and they are reluctant to send folks to prison, as they did in the past, because of the cost.
I am going to get eid of the television and watch YouTube etc on a PC.
The BBC is rubbish and needs to be updated by pay per view. |

Is it like a car or owning a dog?
Do you have to go to your local magistrate, fill out paperwork, pass a background check just to buy a Samsung?
Or is a license just your way of saying subscription?

In brief,
Back at the start of broadcasting there was only the BBC in the UK.
A licence fee was charged to finance the BBC as it doe not have advertising revenue.
If you had a tv you were required to buy the license annually.
These days you are only required to buy the license if you have a device and receive and watch programs as they are being broadcast.
So watching programs that have been previously recorded for example you don’t need one.
A private company has the contract to chase those who should be paying but aren’t, on behalf of the BBC.
You can find yourself in court for nonpayment but most people just tell the tv inspectors to fuck off when they come knocking at the door.
They require a warrant and a police officer to be present if they want to enter your home to check if you have a tv.
There are other technicalities but that’s the jist of it. |

In this digital age it would be very difficult to pin point an address ,unless they were looking at IP addresses which would require far too much resources |

I've received emails which made it clear that they knew I was watching iPlayer without a license (which I was!). Just buy a license! Bear in mind that the money does go towards paying journalists' wages - the BBC being one of the last bastions of agenda-free investigative journalism in the WORLD! I continued to pay the license fee for several years after I no longer really needed to for this very reason  |

The detector van was a complete con. There was no way they could detect if you were using a TV at home. There are many sources of electromagnetic radiation emitting from a house. They had no technology capable of identifying a TV especially if it was off.

We very rarely watch live TV but still have a license, I was laughed at when we moved into our house for wanting one but for the 10 Sundays I watch call the midwife at the start of the year, I prefer to have one. I should probably just cancel it really lol |

All those who say they have never paid and never will might be in for a surprise.
The bbc & government are well aware of the growing number of people cancelling their tv licences. The tv license is a royal charter which ends in 2027.It is currently being debated that if the tv licence is scrapped after the charter ends, how it will be funded. They are planning to take the fee directly from everyone’s taxes.
So we will all end up paying, even if we don’t watch it.
A tax per person rather than per household. I’m guessing it will cost us more than it does now, and you won’t be able to cancel it.

Is this a scare tactic to get them to buy one?
They dont have a tv only a monitor but can pick up tv from amazon firestick.
Told them if they ask just say you watch Netflix and they cannot enter your property without a court warrant so dont let them in.
Has anyone had the tv license people knock on their doors and what was the outcome?

Once they have a person's address regards a TV licence they have it always, personally l think it should be way cheaper than what it is , the amount of wages they pay to over rated , very bad interviewers, radio or TV is scandalous, if a person is in an established dwelling like a house it's very hard not to have one but if a person is on a college campus then no that person shouldn't have one but it's all money , money to those that want a person to have one . |

I've not Payed a TV licence since 2011
Why ?
Because I've seen the salary list of the employees from top to bottom and that's what the licence funds .
If you seen it you wouldn't pay it
Even a podcast in somewhere like the Caribbean or USA is basically an all inclusive 2 week holiday for two employees who actually work 16 hours to produce the podcast .
I've had literally hundreds of letters red and white and I just put them back in the post box
They knocked once when I was in bed and I only know it was them because they knocked at my neighbours at the same time and he opened the door to them.
Please stop funding these outrageous salarys especially if you don't even watch the BBC

You can be forgiven for not knowing.
It's essentialy a tax, for owing a telly (TVs are something else on this site) and the BEEB (BBC, not the FAB kind) have got it into their head and subsequent legislation that everyone with a television set (PC/laptop/tablet/smartphone) WILL be watching live television from anywhere on the planet. This assumption is why they use scare tactics with court fines and formerly prison.
This ais a golden goose that keeps laying eggs, so poor little Tv and radio presenters get £3million pounds a year, just for hosting a breakfast show on the radio.
Thought experiment. Imagine if the Federal US Government forced every American household to pay $150 every year to Public Service Broadcasting or similar just to fund that TV network and a hand full of non commercial radio stations, even if you never watched or listened to them. Would you be happy? Would you pay? All this with threats of fines and scary letters. |

When I was at uni 15 years ago, they used to come round with a scanner and if you didn't have a licence and caught watching tv.... they would fine you on the spot.... Best just to get the tv in my opinion unless they are not watching terrestrial tv and just streaming |

This would be more akin to a very expensive parking lot. Yes if you use the parking lot you should pay. But to pay for it when I don't use it is unacceptable. I have not watched ANY live TV or anything on iplayer since I gave up my license. If they had a monthly payment model, I would dip in and out. But I couldn't justify paying the license fee for watching the BBC maybe one hour a week. Instead I pay for itv with no ads. |

When I was in the Forces sometimes the TV inspectors would come round. The guards at the main gate would stall them and wrap them up in paperwork for a bit and the message would be spread around camp. Then everybody would put their TVs into the room of the one lad who actually had a licence. They would knock on everyone's door to find us all reading a book and no TV then eventually find a room full of TVs (remember most of those TVs were not flat back then). Ask the lad have you got a TV licence, he'd show them it. Are all these TVs yours, yes he'd say. Then they'd fuck off for another few months. |

we only watch live tv on BBC channels, recording all the rest to skip the adds
I do however listen to a lot of BBC radio, so dont begrudge it.
we pay a similair amount over the year for netflix and prime, and probably watch those about equally
And yes, those vans were all a con, just a pile of flashing lights, and a list with everyone who hadn't got a license, my mates dad drove one....
they worked on the basis that if you had a tv but no license you'd just fess up and pay up.

I don't pay any TV licence in years. They send threatening letters all the time, white, red, brown envelopes.
It's just all threats. Ignored and chucked in the bin. Never gave them any name on records for the address.
They can come all they want not they have yet, if they did ever arrive would tell them to leave private land as they have no authority to enter or be there if they dont the dog will be left out or police notified. |

At the BBC, that's what we're discussing. It's an archaic system being forced to pay to watch TV and we're one of the very few remaining nations that has this in place. BBC Studios, the worldwide side of the Beeb generates massive revenue from multiple avenues. It works all across the world via subscriptions, yet we MUST pay it without a choice or face prosecution.

BBC Studios is the commercial arm of the BBC and it’s stated aim is to make sales worldwide of BBC produced content which it does to support the BBC and enhance content which the license fee would not be able to financially support. It’s very successful because the BBC makes good content which is admired worldwide. If you want to talk about things like CBeebies or CBBC or the numerous local radio stations it provides rather than the obvious cheap shots at paedos and all that. I don’t think it’s perfect and the outsourcing of licence fee tracking has been terrible but that’s down to Tory government making the BBC public enemy number one.

Not a scare tactic - I remember the day a frank butcher lookalike knocked on my uni shared house and asked to see my TV licence - I said I didn’t have a tv…. Which was true - my house mate had one with no licence… we got one pronto… even then - in a shared house you needed a separate licence for each room… not sure if that’s still the case |

They say all kinds of things to trick people into buying one. You need one if you’re device is configured and able to receive live TV programs using public infra , even if you never watch them, it’s not really bbc specific. But you also need one for iPlayer because that software is purposely configured that way
No even that has changed. You can't watch anything on iplayer even catch up. But you can own a TV that's capable of receiving live TV you just can't watch live TV on it. You can listen to any bbc radio programs though either live or podcast without a license though. I researched this quite a bit before I gave up my license."
They ate interpreting the telecommunications act which clearly says equipment installed and configured capable of receiving TV programmes. They are saying iPlayer comes under ‘equipment’ but I dint think it’s been tested in court yet |

The BBC has got their fingers in a lot of pies trying to hang on to yhe licence fee. Basically, any format that shows BBC content you need to have a licence to watch. This includes Netfix, Amazon prime, YouTube and more. Even if you don't watch any of their content - its there, so you could at some point. |

Legally if you don't have the means to watch live TV (for example an aerial connected) they can't do you for anything. I pay for it but don't pay for sky/virgin/Netflix, I just pay a yearly fee of around £70 for iptv (and monthly internet). |

Be polite, a simple no thank you then close the door will be perfect. Don't let him into your home and don't enter into conversation with him. That then will conclude their investigation until the next time they visit you.
If you are watching live TV or the iplayer without a licence make sure it can't be seen from outside you property via a window.
What can you watch without a licence.--
Any catchup service (except BBC iplayer and any 'live' programming.
Any on-demand streaming service (except live broadcasting such a Amazons football)
YouTube. including live streams (except where the live stream come from a TV company. So a live stream from Brenda about flower arranging is OK but a live stream from Sky News is not. |

We get sent the usual letter every year or so.
Phone them up and say you are the occupier, do not give your name. Say you do not need a tv license and they’ll note that on the system.
Only had someone pay a visit once. If you are in England you can tell them you have removed their right to implied access.
I don’t think this works in Scotland but if you catch them looking through your window then it falls under unlawful surveillance.
Basically throw a couple of fancy sentences at the “tv license officer” it usually does the trick to scare them off. They’re used to bullying pensioners etc. |
