I've been thinking about this word recently. It felt like it used to be quite a compliment, but a lot of true crime shows dish out this word on their protagonists. I wonder if it's meaning has/or will change.
How do you use/understand it? |

I think it depends on the context in which it's used.
When I told my mum I was divorcing my first husband and said
"But he's so charming"
Well, quite...
I have described genuinely decent and well mannered people as charming in a complimentary way.
I've said "charming" in a sarcastic manner when someone says or does something horrible.

The meaning hasn't changed, it just happens that a lot of socio/psychopaths happen to be charming as well.
It doesn't mean that a charming person is going to murder you and stash you in their freezer... but I'm not saying they won't either.
