Thought of this when posting my favourite acoustic album in another thread, no-ones gonna have heard this thinks I, but maybe.. maybe one of you has?
Anyway, name your off the beaten track obscure favourites. Either artists that didn't quite make it, or early works that are rare and unheralded.
Don't make it too obscure, the idea is to find someone that shares your less mainstream tastes, not show how clever you are. So no beard stroking, let's stick to stuff that at least charted or had a single that did, or didn't but was by people who later did.... If you spot one you've heard of too, high five to you.
I'll post 3 to start, but name as many as you feel like:
Kraftwerk 1 and/or 2 - Even Kraftwerk pretend these don't exist as they are krautrock, not proto electronica...
Chill Out; The KLF - Amazing road trip ambience
And the one I put on the acoustic thread - Penguin Eggs; Nic Jones - Apparently it was the folk album of the year 1980, and according to wikipedia "Record Collector ranked the original LP edition of the album at number 41 on its list of the 'top 50 most collectable records' " so presumably is has some fame or infamy, although I never met anyone who has heard of it ... or him...
Probably posting this at the wrong time of night, but maybe it will get posts tomorrow...

Days of the new - red
Those guys had the potential for so much but were hampered, as many were, by the old drug side of rock and roll
For being a grunge band this album features huge orchestral sections and a surprise appearance from a very young Nicole Scherzinger doing backing vocals |

"One of my favourite and quite obscure records is ‘through a glass darkly’
It’s a concept album written by the guys from the BBC radiophonic workshops"
I Know this! not well, but I've a few albums done by the radiophonics people, there's a cool earlier one released by White Noise called electric storm, and one of the main contributors was Delia Derbyshire, who wrote the Doctor Who theme music by accident while messing around with the tape machines in the workshop - check it out! |

Refining the Theory by early 2000s UK nu metal pioneers Miocene.
They were amazing live and hailed as a band to watch by Kerrang! Making the cover album in 2000.
Chart success was limited to 1 week at number 99 for a single off the second album.

The first album by aor rock band Touch is decent. They were the first band on at the 1980 Donington Rock festival. That was the first in a series which became Download. Touch should have been much bigger. |

"Hi, I'm Tina Titz and please imagine the coolest obscure album that will get me laid and street cred posted in this space "
Just say Nena, 99 Luftballons, the German version and it'll guarantee access into the the Attic on a Monday. |

The Adventures, album Sea of Love.
They had one hit with ‘Broken Land’ latter part of the 80’s. Honestly if you like Simple Minds, The Alarm or even early U2, this is an album for you. An Irish band that never got to their full potential.
I also like The Afghan Whigs, album Do the Beast.
First saw them on Jools Holland and later went to see them live. Another good rock band from the US. |

Not all that North of North London |
I think given one of the most mainstream acts I listen to are mentioned up thread, anything I say is going to look like I'm trying to be obscure!
So I'm going obscure
Besta Venya - Nick Parker ahd the false alarms.
Absolute genius, lyrically clever and just incredibly uplifting
And slightly less obscure, anything at all by Frightened Rabbit, just an amazing band |

"Bit of a Gary Moore fest here, the G-Force album, and Colosseum II, Wardance are both excellent albums, completely different in style but distinctively Gary!"
This
My album collection is full of really obscure bands however, I am a huge fan of Gary and met the guy on a number of occasions,
Add the BBM album to those two above
The work he did with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce was exceptional
He also did a live album Blues for Jimi where he plays Hendrix songs with backing from the remaining members of “The Jimi Hendrix Experience” |

Heavy Metal band from Stourbridge should have been massive
I only really came across Diamondhead through Metallicas Garage Inc album where they covered “Am I evil?” "
Yes I think they covered other songs as well |

Yes, it’s how I came across most of my music taste to this day. I’m a huge Blue Oyster Cult fan because of their version of Astronomy |

"Love Chill Out KLF. So that one has been heard of
"
They “rereleased” it last year, but couldn’t get clearance for the Fleetwood Mac and elvis samples and others, so it’s not the same…
Glad to find a fellow appreciator tho! |

Both Cellular Memory and Life with a view of the swamp we're good. The lead singer now sings folk songs. |

Tommy Bolin - Private Eyes
It's a classic album that still stands the test of time. Been chillin out to it this pm! Not only did he do studio albums, but he waa also a member of Deep Purple.
Not only could he sing, he could also play a mean guitar too! Dad he died... Heroin overdose I think? |

"Klaus Schulze - Babel."
Oh hello! a fellow obscure ambient electronica fan then?
The boxset i mentioned the record collector thread is his collaboration with Pete Namlook (Dark side of the moog).
Sad to see they're both now gone- 10 years apart, as their prolific combined discography is immense in both volume and quality.
Had actually popped back in to suggest another rare ambient audio nugget- Starfish Pools Chill out 'n' confused...a regular player on a long morning or evening drive when i need something proper laid back just wafting around in the background |

Yes, I've got the Dark Side collection, all three boxes of it, a dozen discs! Some excellent stuff on there. Also recently finished acquiring Schulze's "La Vie Electronique" 50 disc series. Only for Schulze completists I think, lots of stuff recovered from old studio tapes, but also some interesting pieces in there. |

I managed to bag the special edition of dark side, with the additional live album off ebay, for about £40- one of my best bargains off there.
Theres no chance i'll ever complete the Namlook collection- way too many and way too expensive- although i have got all five of the Air series as thats what i started with back in about 93- found in the bargain bin and purchased without having heard of him at the time...glad i took the chance!
Might have to spend the evening trawling youtube for the KS back catalogue next time i'm holed up in a hotel room at work |

Weren't they big in the music press. One of those bands you're never sure if you really liked or were buying into the hype. |
