Hugs. No need to be rude.... But I can attest to the fact that the things men think are compliments can be unpleasant triggers for women.
I always think with my neurodivergent brain to keep things formal until you get tonknow the person more.
Honestly I had no idea what went on in mens brains until I started reading more articles written by men and those male podcasts are enlightening! |

The way I see it, if you say or do something with absolutely the best of intentions, you aren’t necessarily responsible if the other party misinterprets what you say or do.
So hold your head high and fuck ‘em (metaphorically) if they respond negatively  |

There's compliments and then there's 'compliments' though. And a huge gulf between them.
What one sees as an innocent compliment the recipient may see as something different and having an ulterior motive.
Many compliments are lost in translation.
Many compliments aren't actually innocent and are intended to elicit a specific response, on Fab specifically they're often intended to encourage a reply to a message, or to boost the chances of a meet.
You can't blame the recipient for any misinterpretation any more than you can sympathise with the compliment giver without knowing the specific details.
And to be honest what's said should be kept between the two parties.
Put it down to experience, don't dwell or over analyse it and move on.

Only the OP knows what he meant with his compliment (and indeed what the compliment was), if it was given well intentioned and with no malice or sarcasm or misogyny etc intended then if it is PERCEIVED that way by the recipient then that’s sadly an unintended consequence.
Thing is we can’t all know what backstories or histories are of others and other than literally saying nothing at all, there’s always the possibility of misinterpretation.
While you have given one hypothetical example “smile love” I’ll provide another.
“Good morning Xx, oh I like your dress, it looks really nice on you”
Now provided the giver meant that sincerely, the recipient can either take that in the way it was intended, or they might take it negatively “oh are you implying I don’t normally dress nicely then?”
If they do take it the wrong way, then my advice stands, in my humble opinion. Hold your head high, you know you meant it sincerely.
Like I said earlier, you can otherwise choose to say nothing at all, but what a miserable world it would be if everyone becomes terrified to say anything in case someone takes it the wrong way and gets offended.
What I do agree with is to think through how or what you’re saying to internally sense-check it first in case it could easily be misconstrued.
Anyway, Just my 2p worth, like. I absolutely respect that you might disagree and that’s fine too  |
