Pet food boss expects managers to tuck in to animal treats.....

Outgoing Mars chief executive Grant Reid insists that bosses at the firm should regularly try tinned dog food before it leaves the factory so it is good enough for their pet to eat.

Reid revealed that he has tucked into plenty of canine food during his 34 years with Mars, which produces a wide variety of dog treats.

He said: "You know, if it's not good enough for me then why would it be good enough for your pet?"

Reid explained that he has tried brands such as Iams and Pedigree during his time with the company and explained that his favourite type of dog food is Cesar, which is aimed at smaller dogs.

Cesar's website says its "gourmet" dog food is designed to "satisfy even the pickiest eaters".....

Makes you wonder what goes in a mars bar these days......

Dog food has to be fit for human consumption I think. Sure I watched a video about it once. It's just meat and gravy at the end of the day. We just add the ick because we feed it to animals.

Who writes the resources though?

I've actually just done a bit of googling and while the nutritional make up of dog food is not ideal for humans to eat regularly it isn't bad for humans to consume.

I like faggots but I don't think I'd eat dog food unless I was extremely hungry.

Only if they are called "pork" sausages

I think if they are just labelled sausages, it can be even lower!

It's not just meat and gravy though is it!

It's blood, ground bones, intestines, brains, parts of animal skin, testicles, animal penis's ect ect...

It's also not subjected to the kind of controls human food is and can contain contaminates, salmonella ect

But you go ahead and eat it if you want to....

Not so ... there's strict regulations on pet food manufacture, and processing requirements have to meet specific limits to kill salmonella, e.coli, Listeria, et al, regardless of the meat industry by-products that are available to use because:

a) it's the law,

b) pet food companies don't want to pay vet bills for sick pooches and kitties,

c) they are very aware that pet food is 'typically' left on the floor where babies can crawl around and accidentally want to taste it.

Hasn’t it all changed now .. that’s why you don’t see white dog poo any more as they don’t pump it full of calcium (from bones) any more?

Mind you I’m no pet food expert..

I hope it comforts you to know, OP, that the Mars Bar recipe remains unchanged:

Chocolate, caramel, nougat, and the ever-present and completely inexplicable massive dick vein on top.

And the legal definition of ‘meat’ for sausages is something like 25% actual meat. I saw the same program. The other 75% includes fat, and rusk which binds to the fat to prevent it coming out when cooked.

Sorry to correct you but since the BSE outbreak it is illegal to use any brain matter from any animal in foodstuffs for humans or animals. As for the other items you mention ground bone is calcium, unless you are a vegetarian or vegan you already eat pork crackling, chicken skin, Fish skin etc etc.

Sorry to worry you but the controls on petfood far exceed the controls on human foodstuffs! You stand a greater chance of contracting salmonella from your local supermarket than from petfood.

Grant Reid and others such as Frank Mars regularly taste the petfood try looking for channel 4's program Britain's Biggest Pet Food Factory it might inform you a little better.

You probably have already tasted petfood as there are numerous cases of takeaway restaurants using it!

After over 25 years in the petfood industry I do know what I am talking about.

Recently changed our Beagles feed from Dog food to meat and fresh veg. He has noticbly more energy and his coat looks more shiny and feels far better.

That is not accurate ALL uk dog food must legally be fit for human consumption in case it is eaten by accident.. ( as can be the case with those who have alzheimers; visual impairments Learning disabilities or who simply choose to eat it.

There are laws governing its production

For example you can't prepare commercial pet food in a domestic kitchen, presumably for health hygiene and safety reasons. This implies that cross contamination is considered as important when making pet food as it is human food. THere ARE Also strict rules on what parts of animal carcasses can go into pet food. You can find out more herd x

You can do away with the veg, they gain little to no nutrition from the veg unlike ourselves. Though no harm in continuing it either.

Had my beagle on a raw diet for 7 years now and would never go back to commercial dog food.

Pet fooled, a great documentary.
