I May well be a big strapping firefighter but last night i shed a tear. another well known celebrity charged with abusing children. yes i know that he is innocent til proven guilty, but the thought of yet another sweet child having their innocence taken away by yet another well known and respected celebrity upsets me!

And why is this man free to walk the streets this morning? Why has he not been remanded into custody ?

The 'celebrity' status of the alleged abusers is pure news fodder.

All cases of abuse are tragic and exceptionally sad.

However, our outrage at these, whilst well founded, merely detracts from a situation that is an everyday occurence for some children (and adults).

It is the cases that don't make the headlines that carry more concern.

I am not detracting from the situations here or from the suffering felt by the abused, but in these 'celebrity' cases, I imagine we are talking about opportunistic abuse in exceptional circumstances.

Long term systematic abuse by those who are close to us and who are supposed to love and nurture us, and us love and trust them in return is a far bigger society issue than the cases highlighted by the press of late.

As I said, abuse is abuse and I feel for all victims of it, but let's be realistic, the cases of these 'celebs' are merely the tip of an iceberg.
