Jewish populations from northern and eastern Europe are often known as “Ashkenazi.” “Sephardic” refers to Jews who were expelled from Spain during the Inquisition and mostly settled in North Africa and southeastern Europe.

A lot of results seem to say which geographical areas people's ancestors lived but that says little about ethnic background. India for example is one of the most ethnically varied places on the planet, while many national identities are very recent, such as Italian or Pakistani (founded in 1947 with much of the population moving from India after partition). |

Ahhh yes, of course. I should've been more specific by saying it was pretty much 100% in the northwest region of India in the Punjab. Not sure if it stretches over to Pakistan but would have to check |

I'm genuinely curious though.
Jews are an ethnoreligious group, I don't think that's up for debate at all.
But would a DNA test just come back with a result of 'Jewish' or would it not highlight the geographical region that particular group came from, given that there are long standing Jewish communities all over the world.
I somehow doubt any DNA testing company would attempt to use 'Christian' or 'Muslim' in the same way?
Surely DNA tests will highlight geographical origins rather than just 'Jewish' as a result?

Potentially, I'm not overly familiar with the history of the area or the inhabitants so while there may have been settlers of mixed genetic heritage, I would've thought that would show up on the results. Even I found it hard to believe it was such a such percentage. |

Jewishness is an ethnic group. Whether people of the Jewish race are religious or not is a different question. There are substantial genetic differences between people who are Jewish and, for example, Slavic or Caucasian people, despite all having white skin. Race is not just about skin colour, which is often what is assumed. People with black skin may also come from various distinct genetic groups, e.g. Bantu, Igbo etc. |

Should a DNA test result not then state if Russian Orthodox Jew, Israeli or maybe German? Given the specific DNA profiles will be vastly different?

Orthodox Jew vs some other sect is purely religious. Like Protestant and Catholic Christians. There are not genetic differences between these religious constructs. Israeli and German Jews have the same ethnic origins - the Ashkenazi, for the most part. There maybe distinct Sephardic or Ethiopian Jewish genetic connections as these groups remainder significantly geographically "isolated" for a long time. Israeli Jews are a melting pot of people of a wide variety of national origins. |

That's the basics of it and true. However The Eastern European Jews became Jews by religion in the 10th century. Before that they were part of the existing eastern European races. When I sent my DNA kit back I sent it to the USA. 2 years later they billed me another £200 out of my bank account from nowhere. When My I delegated my bank to disput it, it turned out they are based in Israel |

I was just using examples.
But surely there's a difference between middle Eastern DNA, if as according to the religion that's the ancestral home of Judaism, and an Eastern European Jew who's family have lived in Russia for hundreds of years. As you say, Israeli Jews are a melting pot so how can the DNA profile simply throw back 'Jewish' as a result?

As you say, Israeli Jews are a melting pot so how can the DNA profile simply throw back 'Jewish' as a result?
A"
The answer to that is in my comment which some took offense to it and labled it "racist" The owners of Testing DNA companies are most if not all from the same political bias and have a non scientific agenda in their classification. Science has been abused to advance political, economic and social agendas for centuries. |

"91% balkan/Mediterranean
6% Scandinavian
3% Jewish
Religion isn’t in your DNA - gotta call that out…
Owners of the testing company can't hide their bias
???
I know I honestly cannot believe what I read here sometimes. I can’t quite decide if people are thick or just racist , or if there’s any difference.
For those that do not know, being Jewish is indeed an ethnicity (as well as other things)
I may be misreading but the ‘owners of the testing company’ being biased comment feels racist. And deliberately so. Not a case of someone being thick!
Please clarify what's racist about my comment?! or are you from those fragile ones whenever your race is mentioned by someone they must be racist?! Lol
My race wasn’t mentioned.
May be not in your blood DNA but apparently it's your race in your political DNA. My question still stand un-answered
I have to disagree here. My race is Black. My ethnicity might encompass the things to which you refer. Especially given that race is a construct, created and hierarchised to give us the social world we have today. |

"I'd not give my precious DNA to the largely unregulated corporations out therex paying them to monetise me and my data even furtherm
I'll stick with what I know of my family from them. "
Never done a test. From what I know of family history, I'm guessing about 20% Irish, 3% Afro-Caribbean, the rest English. |
