What star's death shocked you the most?
Jump to: Newest in thread
For me it was probably David Bowie, brought up with his music and listened to it almost daily.
Mr says the same about Prince that he just couldn't believe it when he heard of his death.
Have a lovely Sunday all. |

I was only 6 but I just about remember Elvis’s death.
My sister was so cut up.
At 42 - I think that was also a shock to a lot of people even though his substance abuse problems are now well documented .

George Michael. Really shocking. Then his sister a couple of years later on the same date.
So many stars died that year. All taken too soon. Bowie, Prince, GM, Rick Parfitt…. It was like they were queueing up to go. |

A few other honourable mentions -
Michael Hutchence
River Phoenix
Tommy Cooper - this in some ways was the most shocking of the lot for me as he collapsed and died on live TV during a performance and the crowd thought it was part of the act.

I was watching Tommy Cooper too, that was shocking for my young brain.
Shane Warne was the one in more recent times |

Chris Cornell, Taylor Hawkins, Amy Winehouse to name a few, tragic wastes.
And then there's the subset of deaths that shock me because I had no idea they were still alive, Raymond Briggs most recently, was sad that he had faded from view ("When the wind blows" is still the saddest book I've ever read)

Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mac Miller we’re so shocking to me.
But when Kobe Bryant died I was in denial for days. I still don’t really believe he’s dead. It just didn’t feel real and still doesn’t. |

John Peel
Pretty much the most important person in the history of popular music from this country...and beyond.
Everything seemed to go downhill after his death- many have tried to fill his shoes, most stumble very quickly |

Not a mainstream celebrity, but the comedian Ian Cognito. He was a legend in the industry and when I had a text early morning saying he'd died on stage, I thought at first he'd just had a bad gig, but he'd actually died at work.
The booker of the gig said of it, 'I'd say dying on stage in front of an audience was what he would have wanted, but he'd have preferred a bigger room and a larger fee,' |

Definitely John Lennon for me... I remember being in WHS and suddenly Imagine was playing over the speakers and I started to fill up and had to leave.
As a massive Beatles fan it did come as a massive shock |

Keith Flint too
Watched the last Prodigy tour and it was without doubt one of the best all round shows and performances i've seen in over 30 years and four figures worth of gigs- the atmosphere was spine tingling, the lights and staging supreme and the band as always were phenomenal...truly at the top of their game- then a few months later-gone! |

I had no idea he'd died, I remember him punching a heckler at Glastonbury...
But I definitely laughed at the irony of him dying on stage |

Not mainstream but Mark Keds, singer of Sennseless Things. They'd donevtheir first proper gigs in almost 20 years not long before his death and it was obvious he was ill and with hindsight it was obvious he knew he didn't have a long time left but he looked so happy and full of life. It still cane as a shock when his death was announced though |

Keef Flint...I've loved The Prodigy since they first appeared all those years back...Keef was my fave'...totally mind blowing live and one of the best live bands I've seen...that never changed in all the 6 times I've seen them. I also saw Keef at Glastonbury doing his own stuff. The Prodigy just won't be the same with out him.
John Peel...Always enjoyed listening to him on Radio 1 and also when he was at Glastonbury, he always played some real different sounds...he introduced us to The Undertones/Teenage Kicks among other bands.
George Micheal...I saw Wham way back in the 80's, enjoy His solo stuff too, good looking and an excellent voice, and didn't he entertain us with his naughty antics |

Rock guitarist Randy Rhoads. He toured with Ozzy Osbournes band and played on his first two solo albums. The band were on tour (and actually there) when he was tragically killed in a plane crash. I was a teenager at the time and for many of that age, it shocked us greatly. Rhoads was destined for greater things. Very sad. |

That was a tragic one. He was scared of flying too which makes it all the more strange. Why would he agree to go for a joyride on a plane being flown by a bus driver?! |

I don’t know about “shocked” but certainly a few deaths that have made me think “damn that is a shame “
We’re:
David Bowie definitely
Lemmy
( just a few days before Bowie! )
Freddie Mercury
George Michael
Robert Palmer |

"Not so much shocked but more saddened.Amy Winehouse.."
Lovely to see her foundation doing so much good work year's after her death, partially funded by the dresses that she actually designed for Fred Perry. |

Charlie Watts, he provided the back beat to the soundtrack of my life and I was saddened by his passing.
George Michael, when the news broke late on Christmas Day I shed a tear.
Shane Warne, younger than me and an icon to cricket fans.
I wasn’t shocked by MJ’s death. He’d been practicing ahead of a residency at the O2 and I had tickets to see him. I remember seeing film of him rehearsing and thinking how frail he looked and that ominously I would not see him on his tour. Sadly I was right. |

Oh I see. You didn't mean it as a joke.
I thought you said him as it wasn't really that shocking him dying given what he did on a daily basis. |

Don't know a lot of the above mentioned but M.J a shock ? George Michael was the shock ! Very unexpected and a waste of a good man.
However, I always think it's weird that some of the best are taken so early Eg Buddy holly, Eddie Chocran, James Dean John Lennon et al. |

All stars eventually run out of their hydrogen gas fuel and die. The way a star dies depends on how much matter it contains—it's mass. As the hydrogen runs out, a star with a similar mass to our sun will expand and become a red giant. |

Freddie, obviously. Although looking back, the clues were there.
Michael Hutchens
Tom Petty
Prince
Shane Ward
Taylor Hawkins
And Caroline Flack, Chris Cornell & Chester. So sad that they went the way they did |

Jules Bianchi, F1 driver died in 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.
After the bad early years in the '60s and '70s we had all got so used, by the early 2000s, to drivers walking away from wrecked cars, Bianchi's death was a big shock. |

"Rik Mayall, felt like a part of my childhood had died too."
Outside of the music post I did earlier, this. I was (and am) a big fan of Rik and his amazing sense of humour since his appearance as Kevin Turvey on A Kick Up the Eighties. Had the pleasure of meeting him once. He was a gentleman and very polite to his other fans and me. Much missed. |

Technically, he didn't die at the GP- it was many months later from the injuries.
I remember seeing the crash and you knew it wasn't going to be a good outcome when the cockpit lifted a telehandler off its wheels |

We should also mention Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna, both killed at the San Marino GP in 1994. Lots of people heard about and remember Senna's death but not many remember that Ratzenberger died the previous day. |
