Top Gun: Maverick.
As a cinephile, ex-film reviewer and complete, effete, overly-critical fan of serious film-making and the crafting of pure cinema I can say with a degree of absolute certainty and authority that Top Gun: Maverick is fucking awesome!
Film of the year. |

"Haven’t seen it yet
But What did you think of Severance then ? "
I know of a poor Danny Dyer movie called Severance from a few years ago…
But if you are including TV shows then it has to be Succession for me. |

I was talking about the Apple TV + show which has nothing to do with the movie.
If you haven’t and you are into masterpiece, I can highly recommend it.

I am not sure it will though as it is an Apple TV + original. You could watch the first episode for free if you have a chrome cast or a smart tv with play store |

I mean TV TV and not Apple TV.
It's bound to be on Alibi or Drama soon. I'll watch it after Death in Paradise. |

If they don't get everyone round at the end to explain who the killer was, it might not be for me |

It’s pretty much everything I hoped I would get from the sequel. The story is wholly unbelievable (I have a lot of aviation operations knowledge). It’s cheesy, and I love it. It shoehorns in, nods to its predecessor. The soundtrack is epic. And the cinematography absolutely mind boggling. My only minor gripe, is that it could have been a tad shorter. It did seem to be a bit pedestrian in parts. |

"Watched it in the cinema, it is way better than it has any right to be. "
That’s actually pretty true.
It wasn’t aweful as I thought it would be. A lot better than I hoped. Tom makes good movies, or at least ones I like. Even the Mission Impossible films should be any good after the first two, but I still watch them and enjoy them. |

"Watched it in the cinema, it is way better than it has any right to be. Definitely film of the year so far.
Amen to that.
My only issue was that the plot was basically 633 squadron!!!" with star wars episode four thrown in...however one of mavericks exploits..seemingly far fetched actually happened in ww2 |

As an aviation geek I'd say it's absolute unrealistic garbage.
As a film fan I'd say it's poorly written badly acted crap!

The film is exactly what it’s advertising is selling. American patriotism with a gung-ho storyline.
Plenty of Cinema goers will enjoy two hours of plane porn and cute looking people being bad ass. Others such as myself will just see it as a waste of an opportunity to add a bit of heft to a flawed character.
It’s a shame as this film with a more visionary Director and the money men being kicked out of the room, could’ve been something truly different. But we have to think about the franchise these days and the possibility of another film.
They had a chance to improve on the first film, maybe make it a bit more realistic, but it just fed us the same creaky story and a Star Wars plot as the ending.
I thought it did what it intended and created a film to be fair to it, what the audience wanted.
However for me, if you’re bringing a character back after 40 years try to find a new story to tell and maybe the best way for him to finally be put to bed.

Err, sorry to be a pedant, but since the Star Wars fighter scene was based on 633 Squadron, the point is moot! |

Terribly sorry, but I have to disagree on a point of fact mentioned above.
It is not a Star Wars plot. The fighter pilot scenes from Ep4 are acknowledged (by Lucas and the British production team) as being influenced by movies such as 633 Squadron, to the point where if you overlap shots they are virtually identical. The fly in, down the trench, the impossible target, the anti air turrets, and the high climb out. Sorry to be a pedant, but if you want to be a pedant you have to get involved in the pedantry!
Top Gun: Maverick is a tent pole movie. Popcorn. But, also a very technically adept example. Mounting IMAX cameras in twin cockpit airframes to allow the actors to experience the stresses of simulated combat in clear detail. It is a technical tour-de-force, taking the IMAX approach used on the faux Spitfire from Dunkirk and expanding it to a new level. The story is really secondary to the emotion and the energy. Just like the identity of the enemy is never explicitly explored because it is unnecessary, the story never needed to be too serious; it really needed to be loss and redemption in a Tony Scott universe of crazy colours and slomo.
With this in mind, compared to its competitors - perhaps the other Covid-affected behemoth being No Time To Die - Top Gun: Maverick over-delivers and is a far, far better popcorn studio movie than it had any rights to be. |

Err, sorry to be a pedant, but since the Star Wars fighter scene was based on 633 Squadron, the point is moot!" trying to get an explosive device town an exhaust port was total star wars ..and why not bring in dam busters as well?..star wars reminds me of that film more than 633 |

The point I was trying to make was the story of Bruce Carr..an American pilot who was shot down...stole a FW190 and flew it back to an allied airfield...so good old Tom boy wasn't as far fetched as it first appears |

Totally agree with this despite great film production there were too many clichés in a rehashed story line from the original |
