Thought provoking piece and pretty accurate:

“Society’s understanding of mental health issues locates the problem inside the person – and ignores the politics of their distress”

I agree, it's interesting and it's something I've thought to be the case for a long time.

I've been offered anti depressants because of my feelings about my personal circumstances. I don't see how anti depressants are going to help me get around my house without agonising pain, how anti depressants might speed up seeing medical specialists or change my circumstances as a parent. All of the aforementioned are why I am struggling to stay chipper.

It’s no wonder you’re struggling in that situation, and I agree about anti-depressants. Whilst I agree there is a place for medication, we need to move away from diagnosis and automatic medication culture x

A friend with ms was offered Prozac to help her deal with her situation. She turned it down. She also asked for a hysterectomy because at 29 she found having carers deal with her periods was a humiliation too far (for her), the male consultant advised against it because "what if they found a cure and she wanted children".

But I digress...

It's not a digression, it's relevant. Too many women are not listened to or offered appropriate treatment/care for ladies-related issues. They are told they're mentally ill instead. It's the very origin of the word "hysterectomy"! Used to cure "hysteria" in women

It's peculiar as a fair chunk of the hcp are themselves women. We had a thread a few years ago about the sexism in provision of healthcare even in testing of drugs. Eye opening and appalling.

Women in healthcare are trained mainly by men. The textbooks and anatomy texts were written mainly or exclusively by men.

Oh yes the sempiternel ultimate attribution error.

It is easier to blame the intrinsic nature of the illness than to recognise the role society has in triggering it.

Working in the mental health field, it's clear that people's understanding of mental health and how challenging and changing societies perceptions of what causes health issues is important. We are expected to "fix" the failures by giving antidepressants or therapy as that's easier and cheaper than "fixing" society.
