Why doesn't CGI age well.
You can watch a film and it looks great.
A few watches still great, suddenly out of the blue CGI look's shocking.
Can't understand how it can happen when everything is digital, surely it shouldn't look any different from when new?
Ive recently revisited game of thrones and this is the third watch on streaming service.
However the CGI hasn't aged well and now looks cheap.
Why is this any experts in??

Because you know it is cgi, and your eyes become aware it is cgi, mixed in with new advancements of cgi are released all the time.
That is why heavy cgi is noticed more often. Especially if it is a character, uncanny Valley will always win out and stop your eyes being tricked eventually. No matter how good it looks.
Pro tip: Often 75% and over of what you are seeing on screen for almost any movie these days is cgi. Everyone focuses on the big things like people or animals, characters etc but the background cgi goes unnoticed.
Finally over the past few years Hollywood in particular are putting huge strains on cgi artists and the workload plus deadlines results in much weaker results. |

Screen technology and cgi technology gets better with time
Say for instance it’s a 80s film
Well screen tech at the time was 480p
Most modern tvs are at least 4k
The details that were hidden in 480p
That they new were off but can’t see because off the res
Is not being exposed due to tvs have a better res |

Changes in technology most likely. As more realistic effects become easier and faster to simulate and render, the better they look. And because you get used to modern effects, the old ones don't quite keep up anymore.
Probably.

When you watched it the first time you knew it was CGI, but it was as good as other cgi so you just accepted it/impressed by it.
As artists, software and rendering has gotten more efficient and the results more realistic, you've gotten accustomed to newer CGI and then when you go back, the old stuff doesn't look at good anymore.
Like when I was so impressed with mega drive graphics as a kid, but now they look terrible by comparison. It's the comparison.
Though you might have to get used to crappy CGI as there's a shortage of facilities and staff. |

Because the first time you watch something good you're immersed. You don't notice because you're following the narrative, investing in the characters, wondering how the story is going to develop. |

"For the record, Jurassic Park (1993) still looks a lot better than a lot of modern CGI. And it had plenty of CGI "
I miss proper use of practical effects and make up. The transformation scene in American Werewolf in London holds up so well today and there's not a bit of CGI in it. |

I think this is getting worse.
It was interesting I was listening to Jonny Vaughan talking on the radio about this and he hit the nail on the head.
Watching films these days is like watching someone play a computer game.
Cgi was once cutting edge it's now cheap looking and ruining the art of filmmaking.

The CGI Ash in the last Alien film was like PS2 graphics.
I do like when prosthetics and practical effects are used in films. Guillermo del Toro likes them a lot so I'm excited at what his Frankenstein film will be like. |
