They really aren’t smart. Fills me with dread the thought of breaking down on one

That’s why they’re slowly being rolled back to how they used to be. Until further study has been done on the dangers vs the benefits.

What an absolute waste of time and money that’s been then!

Pretty much yeah.

But what government department is gonna admit they’re wrong?

Not a single one, it’s political suicide.

Princes Risborough, Luasanne, Alderney

the way things are going there will be less people being able to afford to use roads in the volumes which we are used to.

Worcester

Since they changed the section of the M5 by us there have been 10 fatalities and its only been "Smart" for about 18 months.

We all know the infrastructure can't cope with the volume of traffic but there must be a better solution.

I had a puncture on one once, managed to crawl to the lay-by, was a bloody nightmare trying to get back out again during rush hour

London

Where I live, the speed limit on the M4 motorway approaching London is no more than 60 since the introduction of the smart motorway, even when it's empty. It just seems like a covert means of reducing the speed limit.

It often drops to 40 because there may have been an incident a few hours before, which has since cleared up.

I wonder what the consultation to introduce them cost?
