Having been on both sides...
Sex as a guy is kinda like getting pleasure just before arriving at a destination. Localised as you described.
Whereas women's sexual pleasure is enjoying the whole journey - whether I orgasm or not. A whole body and mind experience.

If you're looking a semi-serious answer, I'm fairly sure nature's lovely hormonal roller coaster, added to the head-melt of day-to-day life, social and family pre-conceptions & pressures, religion, and all the other forms of sexual repression will have something to do with scuffing the shine off of it all.

This means we start to seek out excitement with that person less often.
Unless its a long distance relationship...then it keeps up during to the deferred gratification.
