I read an article about it, that about 70% of pubs are unlikely to survive the soaring cost of living crisis this winter, what do you think of it and can anything be done to save them, also is your pub still left? I hope that they will survive it

I’m surprised any pubs are still going. It must be so stressful running one at the moment, especially when still trying to recover from the effects of Covid as with all businesses.

My local has just shut down, which is especially galling as they ran a crowdfunder to support them (and got a council grant to make up the shortfall) and they've still shut up shop.

Too many pubs think they're going to be the next Hand and Flowers rather than just doing the basic bits right.

Hopefully it will be resurrected (there was talk about making it a community pub.....)

Pubs are struggling more than ever now because os staff shortages. This is by far the biggest impact affecting the hospitality industry at the moment. Many are simply unable to open because there are no chefs and no front of house team.

Bit of a mess, post brexit and covid and now with a cost of living crisis plus rising energy costs it's looking bad for many such establishments and the small business sector..

Most pubs fail due to poor management. I've seen failing pubs become successful and vice versa simply by changing the people in charge.

Secret hideaway in the pennines

Lockdown was just another nail in the hospitality industry, banks and finance institutions won't lend to this sector anymore.

The financial package that was put in place during lockdown didn't even scratch the surface of the outgoings.

Wet sales only pubs will still be here, more so in local communities, but I believe they will be fewer in number

totally understand we shut are family one just as lockdown started my kids didn't want to run it to much hassle my parents retired still live there but breweries have a lot to do with closures a truly independent one as a better chance of survival.

The area where I have lived all my life. Used to have around 12+ pubs within a one mile radius that I been in. Now there are 3 . The rest are now either, shops, flats or houses. This on council / private housing estate. Which is large. They all shut before covid. So not new. Mainly shut due to price of beer etc going up.

Way before this energy crisis they were in trouble.

“New research suggests the total number of pubs in England and Wales is down 7,000 on a decade ago at 40,000.” Business live .com

Hospitality under a lot of pressure, energy, higher business rates, paying back covid loans, higher interest rates, workplace pension contributions, higher national insurance contributions, inflation/stock prices and more people spending less

I think there are some already charging that and a lot more in some urban city pubs.

Not that I've been in any since lockdown started, or even since lockdown ended because...people.

Someone further up the thread commented about Deliveroo doing pints.

That's actually not a bad idea.

I get everything else online, even before Covid began. Not been in a physical shop for over 3 years I would estimate. I've saved countless hours and pennies shopping mindfully and discerningly online.

There is nothing I've not needed that couldn't be found online.

Put it another way, 200 orders with AZ in 2021. Assume each order would have taken me 1 hour to get in the car, drive to the shops, and hope to find said item for an acceptable price. That's 8.33 whole days time saved doing it a home. Or 4 and a bit weekends. A month of weekends. Spent physically shopping both Sat and Sun.

Physical shopping is an archaic inconvenience for some of us, myself included.

I don't browse online. I already know what I want before I open the browser. I just need to find a supplier.

Online all the way

My local is a dump and charges over £4 a pint.

I can taxi into town and back, have a better session, pay half as much per drink at Wetherspoons, for the same cost as a night at my local Greene King

Pubs should look at their prices before whining as to whether they’ll make it through the next few months

I have an autoimmune condition and other medical issues. Some days I can barely walk and struggle to talk.

The only way I can have a hot meal is getting one delivered or going out for a meal which depending on how my health is on a certain day isn’t easy

Delivery services for meals is serving people who cannot go out and buy their food for whatever reason

I certainly wouldn’t drive somewhere to pick up a takeaway when it’s cheaper to pay delivery charges and have it dropped off at the door

I've worked in and around pubs on and off since I was 18, pubs need to be the centre of the community, needs to be more than the place people go to get d*unk.

We have 3 pubs where I live, 1 is totally food oriented and does make drinkers feel unwelcome, 1 is more a hotel and the staff are pig ignorant to customers and now usually closed by 9.00pm. And last (Where I drink) used to be pretty dingy, tied to a company that did zero investment and put in managers that don't give a fuck. Since been bought, now a free house and had a lot of time and money put into to spruce it up and turn it into a pub that is busy most every night and actively encourages people/groups that don't usually go to pubs to come in.

That's what pub a needs to do to survive.

Sadly the pub trade has had a perfect storm of Covid and now spiralling cost. Since Covid everyone has learned they can have a good time, for less, at home. Since Covid pubs have suffered with staffing because thier casual barstaff found jobs elsewhere when pub a were shut (add Brexit to that where most waiting staff were eastern European now all gone home). Now rising costs mean beer prices are rising and people are having less money to spend in a pub, so punters are dwindling.

A lot of pubs are going to close, the government are and will do nothing to save them - why would the government step in, they don't want people gathering in numbers, talking to eachother, they want us shut in our homes not talking to each other being spoon fed the propaganda they feed us. Look at history, where do most revolutions start, either with a Union or from a group of people who met in a pub.

Not taking the piss at all. How much effort does it take to shop or pick up a takeaway? Or dare I say it, cook something?

In Japan they used to have a service much as you describe called "Delivery Health" Bit more expensive than Deliveroo mind. Saying that there are website available already if that is what you fancy. I've just looked on the BBC website and its got this UK inflation rate calculator to see how worse off you are.

One of the figures it shows an average for is eating and drinking out... £285 a month for the average household!!!!

Well I can't see that remaining that high with everything going up.

While I will hate to see them close I don't know how people can afford to spend like that!

Brewdog have just opened what I believe is the biggest pub in the UK at Waterloo. Capacity just under 2000.

I’m off to my local tap room in a bit. Capacity, about 10 sitting and another 10 standing.

Good beer at about £3.50 a pint. Good chat too.

As someone who owns & consults on bars / pubs…

I did do a huge editorial on this.. Conclusion: the only way pubs will survive the next 2 years is by

cutting as many overheads as possible

I’ve actively removed 25k in annual overheads in the past month, that’s 50-60k less I need to go through my till per year.

Fair enough, but let’s break that down…

30l keg of Lager = £90 ex vat

That’s 52 pints, 48 when you take into account wastage and line cleaning… = £1.87 a pint cost

Vat = 85p

That’s a profit of £2.28

Whilst in the pub your personal use … the serving staff, glass cleaning, the water in the toilet visit most people have, the electric for the hand dryer, the soap, the cleaning of your table…

Then there is the costs people don’t see, heating, ac, cleaners, licences, accountants, corporation tax, rent, business rates, electricity… the list is pretty much endless

Don’t blame the publican for the price of a pint, blame the government… every 52 pints @ 5.10 sold raises funds of £47.90 in beer duty and vat alone

Pubs contribute 23bn to the UK’s GDP and 13bn in Tax revenue. Which is roughly the budget for running the entire police force for England & Wales

Pubs … the cornerstone of the British economy, culture and history.

Maldon

Can we get rid of some of the awful national chains of restaurants and pubs, with the exception of Greene King as my daughter works for them.

Let the hospitality industry be run by independents. We do seem to have far more national chains in the UK compared to other European countries.

I’d also leave McDonald’s as I quite like it as a guilty treat once a month and I find their toilets to be very convenient when I’m out and about.

Finedon ,

"Used to go pubs clubs in Liverpool Widnes Runcorn price back then was well cheaper

Went for 1 pint while out walking my doggie he had cornetto lol

5.20 a pint pubs have got overheads I know this but a lot will close Down which is shame

Fair enough, but let’s break that down…

30l keg of Lager = £90 ex vat

That’s 52 pints, 48 when you take into account wastage and line cleaning… = £1.87 a pint cost

Vat = 85p

That’s a profit of £2.28

Cynic in me says the Gov will assist organisations like Weatherspoons in buying out failing pubs. That will be the relief offered, no bailouts or loans.

"I read an article about it, that about 70% of pubs are unlikely to survive the soaring cost of living crisis this winter, what do you think of it and can anything be done to save them, also is your pub still left? I hope that they will survive it "

And today I closed one of my pubs… it’s less of a loss to close its doors than to open it

It's a damn shame. Also feel for owners of any small business like cafés and such, a mate of mine is considering opening one soon!

Probably 7/10 independent businesses will go to the wall.

I fear for my friends that have businesses. My own was decimated, and closed up for good, thanks to the shocking Covid mismanagement strategies.

Sad if it does come to pass as yet another blow to town/cities and most of rural area's as they've already lost their post offices/banks and shops ?? and the only thing is to look at the bitter irony in the fact that the sound bites of yesteryear ..coalition of chaos..strong and stable and of course the other party would bankrupt the country and most of all crash the economy ??.....

It is a tragedy on many levels. Economic, social and personal for the business owners who through no fault of their own find themselves in this quagmire.

Of course, no one in a position of power will mention the real causes behind this
