Tesco under fire from some vegans for selling fruit such as the orange which is a citrus fruit coated in a beeswax based coating..
So if a vegan grated the zest of the orange and consumed it then it would contain some beeswax..
What the hell is going on here guys .. ?
Do Vegan types not eat honey |

"So Tesco change their whole orange buying process to entertain a couple of hundred vegan types of which, few grate the zest....
This belongs in the Could Not Make this Up Hall of Fame ."
And yet, it feels made up? |

It's not necessarily about consuming animals or animal products, but a way of life that seeks to avoid harm to animal life. So no, vegans would not want a product coated in something containing beeswax, nor do they eat honey, or bee vomit as my late father used to call it... |

Welcome to.the wonderful world of modern social media where you can find an echo chamber to suit your own narrative and block out anything else. You can then gang up and get angry about whatever with all those like minded voices under the false assumption the rest of the world gives a shit.
I've got bigger shit to worry about than beeswax on oranges and so has the average supermarket. |

If it's only a few hundred Tom, how come every super market now have a large and varied range of vegan foods on sale? Super markets don't pander to a few, they sell to the masses and they know that the plant based market is growing.
Also, bees work bloody hard to make the honey, they should be allowed keep it, not have it stolen and replaced with shitty sugar water! |

"I know you can buy unwaxed lemons maybe unwaxed oranges could be introduced."
Unwaxed lemons dry out so quickly..
In countries where they grow in your garden you can pick fresh every day
Lemons don't travel well..
Oranges travel better ...
They put a coating on to reduce evaporation. This is why these veganistra are complaining...
Can they just not eat the fruit and discard the skin ? |

I wouldn't have thought so Tom. That's vs big like throwing the steak and kidney away and just eating the pastry. An animal or insect was involved |

What we best not tell folk is what happens to the Bees that are brought over from Europe and used in our UK greenhouses ... then poor vegan folk really wouldn't eat anything |

I support vegans being able to get food that suits their dietary requirements. |

I don’t speak for all veggies but I do not care. More power to them. |

I'm an omnivore and I'm all for plant products being vegan. It's still an orange, and everyone can eat it that way. |

Well considering fruit and veg is the majority of a vegan diet then I don't think it's unreasonable for them to want it to be vegan friendly. |

This is a really good point. If there are any vegans on here, would they care to comment on the commercial use of bees to pollinate many fruits? Something like 90% of the honey bees in the US are used to pollinate almonds with billions dying every year. If you're prepared to eat produce that requires the commercial use of bees, and the massive death rate for those bees means more honey than they need, why not eat the honey? Why not use the wax? You're already accepting the work of the be anyway?

You don't need Social Media.
Daily Mail readers have been doing this for decades! |

When I was doing the whole vegan thing it wasnt about the animals for me. That was just a bonus.
Technically I've heard that avocado isn't vegan. The ship in lots of bees...
Each to their own. |

"Yep, the immoral labour abuse of bees in intensive fruit and veg production...
....AND don't get me started on bananas
They abuse bees ?.
"
To extend the shelf life of bananas typically they are sprayed with a chemical made from crab or shrimp shells... |

I like that food producers and retailers are starting to think more comprehensively about their practices, their impact on people and the environment.
We just need to get this government to do more of this and to be ashamed of voting to permit more sewage being released around our beaches and into riversz affecting wildlife, the environment and people.
Potentially an alternative can be found to help to sustain fruits, so that they can be more universally healthy. |
