I have Bells Palsy

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I have been diagnosed with Bells Palsy. I spent 2 days at hospital, had various tests because they first thought i'd had a stroke. I had mostly great treatment, care and a small amount of advice. I was shell shocked so didn't ask enough questions once diagnosed. My GP is very difficult to get an appointment of any kind. I have used doctor google and facebook but i wondered if anyone here has had it and can offer some basic advice on care etc

I don’t know much about it except despite how bad it can sometimes look, it passes with no permanent effect.

I remember a famous motorcycle racer was stuck with it just before a race in Malaysia back in the 90’s, he continued to race and did well. The biggest problem he had was the inability to blink which was a problem with the heat and sweat , his solution a ladies sanitary towel taped inside his helmet across his forehead to soak up the sweat

I had it 16 years ago. It's from the same viral family that causes shingles.

Some recover in weeks, some never recover.

It took me 8 months to go from an initial 8/10 score where the right side of my face was completely paralysed and I couldn't blink properly and eating and drinking was a nightmare to a 3/10 which is when they said they could do nothing more.

That was a joke in itself because they hadn't done a single thing.

During those 8 months not one doctor or medical professional put a finger on me. All they did was sit across a desk once a month and instruct me to move my face in certain ways.

I paid privately for months of acupuncture which did help a little but even all these years later I still have nerve damage.

I tend to slur my speech when tired and both sides of by face still operate independently.

My advice is to push for as much treatment as possible including physio.

The many months of antibiotics also affected my gut health which has in turn caused further issues so be sure to take a continuous course of probiotics to avoid ongoing problems.

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote an in depth paper on it when he suffered from it and spent a lot of time and money doing his own research.

Oh no I've had it and kind of still got it. Most people recover from it quickly but a few others have it for longer.

Acupuncture helped me and if its serious you might get a referral. There are also some great support groups.

Touch wood you recover quick though x

Go to search forum subjects enter Bells Palsy and it will bring up previous threads on the subject.

I have had shingles in the past and that was quite painful, my understanding of Bells Palsy is that it can be worse than shingles.

I only laugh because I am about 2 weeks ahead of you in what they call the recovery… so after the 10 days of steroids and anti virals it’s honestly a case of just waiting!

On the practical side… since you may only have half a month working eating hard food is a bitch!! So eating for example jacket potatoes are brilliant and then you can go mad on the fillings

Also… get some drink straws in…. Some artificial tears to help with keeping your eyes moist… and some medical tape to keep your eye closed at night

Thank you, that is really informative and helpful. I am going to battle to see my GP tomorrow. I have been given high doses of steriods but no extra antibiotics, i already take a small dose of preventative antibiotics but oddly the consultant never mentioned infection or virus causing it.

I have got steriods to take and gel tears (which i use anyway) but no anti virals so i will ask my GP about them. I also wear a sressing over my eye at night to keep it moist because it's not blinking or closing properly.

As you say, eating and drinking is difficult, luckily i already have straws (washable ones), and am trying to eat suitable food lol.

Thank you x

Aw, big hugs Nell.

I can't offer much more than the responses above, only to say that my friend had it last year. Was quite scary as I was with her & thought it was a stroke. We went straight to A&E & they were brilliant. Thankfully she was fine after a couple of weeks, with no lasting effects. Hopefully this will be you

Hi Nell ,

Yes I've had it about 5 years ago

The doctor gave me steroids for 2 weeks to take & I was lucky that I made a full recovery .

It took about 6 weeks to 8 weeks before everything got back to normal.

Feel free to message me if you want to x

Wellingborough

It's generally accepted that it's an inflammatory reaction in CNVII (facial nerve).

A number of viruses have been implicated including herpes simplex, Epstein-Barr, herpes zoster, cytomegalovirus, rubella, Coxsackie, mump, influenza as well as SARS-CoV-2 (and some post-covid vaccinations).

Other causes are trauma, degenerative change, various neuropathies, neoplasia etc.

Predispositions include pregnancy, recent respiratory infection, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and immune suppression.

It may, rarely, be recurrent (this tends to run in families and is likely to be a genetic predisposition).

Spontaneous resolution is anticipatory, steroids can be useful if prescribed early but the most important intervention is to protect the conjunctiva of the eye on the affected side: use of an eye patch during the day and application of a cotton wool pad and taping at night. The aim is to keep the conjunctiva moist and free of dust/foreign bodies.

Duration 4 - 8 weeks with most cases resolving completely by 6 months.

There's no compelling evidence that adjunctive treatments r.g. acupuncture etc. have beneficial effects.

The rapid assessment by the CVA team has, effectively, excluded more serious causes and, hopefully, you'll make a complete recovery.

Drop me a PM if you require any additional information or links to EBM as posting these on the fora usually earns me a temporary ban as medical journals aren't considered acceptable by FS as sources of information.

I had in 25 years ago when living in China. I had on one side and maybe too one month to go away. 6 months later and appeared on the other side and again one month. Never had a problem since so fingers crossed for you. Occasionally feel a bit of an ache but maybe completely different and I can't wink very well

I saw doctors in China and HK and really nothing they could do. Massages did help relief the ache and pain - the little spot behind top of jaw near ear. Press really hard myself and got it done by others. I went to a clinic in shanghai specialising in Bells Palsy and saw about 30 people in the waiting room all with the same problem. Feel free to PM if would like to take more x

Thank you, it's very informative. I was tested straight incase i was having/ have had a stroke, TIA, i had numerous tests including a CT scan and a stroke was ruled out and then went to the TIA clinic the next day for more tests.

They decided it was Bells Palsy and gave me steriods and eye gel. The consultant was excellent, he said the nerves to the side of my face go through a small hole and for some reason they had become inflammed and then they were blocked.

Feel free to send me info

Thank you x

This is likely complete nonsense but as I am thinking it I might as well type it.

I saw a 'gimmick' device for exercising your jaw on qvc or something. It looked like a headband that went under your chin. Don't know if something like that might be useful to help exercise the muscles - or just disregard

Good luck all

It will get a bit worse before it gets better… my doctor told me not to expect anything for the first 3-4 weeks and then it should start getting better! I think you are near the end of the steroids stage

I now in what I like to call the “shriek smile” phase .. you’ll know what I mean and you’ll also be going through the “what is the largest thing you can comfortably eat”‘stage ( ps I am adamant I am not cutting up a scone.. but like I said soft foods like jacket potatoes are a godsend!)

Just stick with it… I even went eyepatch shopping but they were just too uncomfortable for me…

I am find the speech thing the most frustrating.. as the harder you think about what you are saying, the more pronounced the slurring is! B and P’s are a bitch!!

My Mum has suffered with it for years, she used to have a flare up every few weeks but more recently it’s months without any issues. As people have said previously, it’s not had any long lasting damage visually and she can feel when it’s about to come on now too

Don't be dispirited. It was a few weeks before I felt any improvement and as I said after two incidents lasting a month or two many years ago been absolutely fine since. Just need to be patient. A week or two is not very long.

I'm just over 3 weeks now and have a slightly better smile and my eye is almost ok but my eyebrow isn't normal yet and i have a lot of pain in my lower skull and behind my ear.

People are still staring at me though

I'm going to start taking tumeric today because it's meant to calm down inflamation.

"I have been diagnosed with Bells Palsy.

"

I had it many years ago, came out of nowhere, a course of steroids and two weeks later was on the mend, fingers crossed I've had no lasting affects. When I tell people about it now they are like I'd never had guessed, so you'll be fine I'm sure. Still doesn't stop you worrying though.

Great news. I had the pain behind ear too at times. Even now get the odd twinge there. Did find pressing hard on the painful point helped relieve it for a bit.

If i don't (try) to smile then i look okish now, at first i didn't though because my affected eye didn't close or blink and watered constantly, my eyebrow is a lot lower than the other one and my mouth on the affected side was turned downwards, didn't move at all, drooled most of the time too

Mee meeee currently on month 5 . If you want a chat then feel free to message and we can compare notes. If your not on antivirals now then I'd suggest you've missed your window so to speak. They need to be admistered really early or have limited effect. Not sure why your on antibiotics though.

Thank you. I'm on a low dose of antibiotics anyway for another heath reason, not for the Bells Palsy. I was given high doses of steriods, which i've finished now plus eye gel

I had it about 30 years ago but don't remember to much about it apart from they said it was probably from an ear infection caused by driving with the window open and everything returned to normal in about 4 or 5 months.

I was given eye gel and also some drops. The gel is artifical vitamin a , it worked wonders even if I couldn't see when I used it. My eye is now producing its own tears, which in itself is a challenge as I still can't blink properly so my eye kinda fills up ! I've stopped taking lumps out of my lip now and I know it's improved massively. Metallic taste in the mouth is better and I get no pain. It was suggested facial massage had mixed results. I did try acupuncture but I was visiting the UK at the time. I googled acupressure points and do them a couple of times a week.

I have to use eyedrops/gel several times a day even before getting BP because i have Sjogrens Syndrome so i don't make tears much anyway.

I'm so very tired and breathless all the time since getting BP.

My mouth is very sore from me biting inside but i always have a sore mouth from SS anyway.

The pain in my lower skull and up near my ear is horrible and gets me down

Because the first symptoms of bells are the same as a stroke, the drooping face, 111 tell you to get yourself to a hospital safely asap ( don’t drive yourself!) or to ring 999 for an ambulance.

As a long of people know… I am about 10 further on in my Bell’s palsy diagnosis from nell.. so today is 28 days

It’s slow… face doesn’t look as bad as it did originally, but still can’t move it with, the biggest tells are when I laugh or cry, and then it looks like what I call “shriek face”

But I can now close my eyes… can now drink from a glass without a straw if done really slowly (cans are still a mess) but straws are still a lot easier… still on a soft food not eating anything I can’t cut up into little pieces diet! Jackets potatoes are now the favourite food for me!

Hadn’t had the tenderness behind the ear thing until yesterday, so I was thinking oh god ear infection! But reading this.. if it’s normal part of recovery then I’ll just get the pain killers out…

I did a few days ago but they told me to go to A & E even though all i wanted was advice.

My GP has said he will phone me this coming week, partly because of the BP but also because i have some mental health issues but i'm not holding out much hope that he will.

I had it. I was OK after a few weeks. Our hospital was so over crowded I was put into a storage room. I couldn't sleep because there were nurses in and out all the time. The treatment for me was iv antibiotics and many stern lectures about my diabetes.

After the initial shock of seeing my face fall on one side I was pretty much freaked out until I recovered.

I hope you get well soon

I got it a few years ago.

I got a massive fright when it happened. I thought I'd had a stroke. For me, the left side of my face didn't drop but it wouldn't move. It was as if I'd had verticle botox

I was given a course of steroids to take and fortunately made a full recovery after about 4-6 weeks.

Have you been offered any treatment? I had nothing just loads of tests to eliminate a stroke. Sorry to hear it's resurfaced, my understanding is it's a viral attack on a nerve tends to happen if you're rundown/stressed.

Yes, high dose steriods which then reduce, eye gel. Had bloods taken and CT scan incase it was a stroke. Plus the next day went to a TIA clinic. No stroke.

Im on day 2 of high dose steriods for the 2nd time. I'm now in hospital waiting for a bed, got a trolley atm. Once i have a bed i can then go on the list for an MRI scan incase it's something sinister.

I think i'm just unlucky.

I'm on my 2nd bout in 6 weeks, right first, not fully recovered now left side, spent this week in hospital.

Face is paralysed can't see properly, it's painful, very difficult to eat, drink and talk.

Only guesses at what causes it.
