This thread should be fun.
Assuming the OP is an expert on race and has extensive understanding of the experiences of POC in the US specifically ofc. Then it won’t be like the usual threads about race on here.

Ok I'm tired, like super tired and I've had wine and skimmed the article so if I offend anyone, I apologise in advance.
Banning people based on their race/sex/hair colour is yeah, bang out of order. I get that. I think everybody does.
Way I see it, these people have faced violence/abuse at the hands of white people, is it a big deal if they don't want white people in their home, the place they are meant to feel safe? I don't know about you OP but I wasn't planning on visiting.
I guess I'd liken it to a women's shelter. No men allowed, I'd say for very good reasons.
They need time to heal away from the people that caused them pain. And yeah not all men not all white people, but if it helps them, why not?

Literally an era in US racial history that barred folk from practically everything and kept them segregated.

Again read the article because it is not student accommodation. It has absolutely nothing to do with the University and is a private home for persons of color who are 1st generation immigrants to this country. It is a specific type of accommodation for a specific group of people. It is a home, somewhere people live and anybody can decide who does and doesn't enter their home. |

I know its not affiliated with it, thats not the issue. The issue is that access to it is clearly race based and its own rules exclude white people. In any walk of life and in any era, race based exclusion is an abomination |

"Do you have the same energy for racism against anyone other than white people? Or is your outrage saved for when your race is supposedly discriminated against?
No, i have the same energy for all others. If i saw a place that had a set of rules which excluded people of any race, i would be equally disgusted.
Wouldnt you?
If people green arrow you though it would suggest otherwise.
Meaning what exactly? If you want to say something, please feel comfortable to do so"
I have said it quite clearly. |

"This thread should be fun.
Assuming the OP is an expert on race and has extensive understanding of the experiences of POC in the US specifically ofc. Then it won’t be like the usual threads about race on here.
No im not an expert on race, whatever that is. But im certainly interested in people's thoughts on segregation like this in 2022
Hardly comparable to segregation
Its a the very definition of segregation.
It's not. Not if you know the origins and connotations of that word.
Separating people based on race, preventing people of a particular race going someonewhere because of their race.
Sorry, you can dance around it all you like. Thats segregation. And racism
If you had read the article you would know this is a private home. It is a home for particularly vulnerable persons of color who are 1st generation immigrants. People are not being stopped from going to public places which is what segregation is about.
Sorry thats just splitting heirs as well. Its student accommodation. And it doesn't matter what it is. Its a truly shocking thought that someone is not allowed somewhere because of the colour of their skin
When a woman flees violence and goes to a women's refuge, do you think they let men in, or should it be a place where they feel safe as there aren't any? Or is that sexist?"
Nope it isnt, and thats a false equivalency. The sexes have always been separated since the dawning of civilisation for obvious reasons.
The races havent, except in dark periods of history |

I did read it. Im not sure how that changes anything. It still actively excludes people of a specific race. |

OK it's from the daily mail but...
White people can and do live in POC house, but the focus for POC house is providing a safe and supportive living environment for people of color,' said Ross.
But Ross also said the Person of Color Theme House has it's 'own culture and practices,' and the focus of the house is to provide 'a safe and supportive living environment for people of color.'
He said house members purposefully work towards 'not making Whiteness central to the experience for members living in the house,' because some members have been traumatized by the 'white violence' mentioned in the rules.

The problem there is you are looking at Fox News. It is a dishonest, reactionary propaganda outlet for the Republican party run by the Murdochs. Never go to it for a balanced assessment of what's happening. |

Im no Fan of Fox News but the source isn’t the problem here. It’s still the comprehension skills or lack of and the lack of understanding of race in the context of America or racial violence. It’s that for me. |

Historically in America, black people have been owned as property, segregated, oppressed, denied votes, denied jobs, lynched, abused and all sorts. If there is an area where black people can be around white people only with consent, why is that something white people have any business complaining about? It's a free country and private company is trying something out. I have zero problem with that.
Fox News kicks up a fuss about bathrooms not being segregated along biological sex lines. They don't want to make amends for centuries of enforced segregation on racial lines. They don't care that red-lining pushed minorities into poverty-stricken ghettos. Now they want to complain that some black people want to have a space in ONE building where they get to say if white people get to come in. It's disgusting. Let them get on with it. It doesn't affect the liars like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity. They claim they are all for freedom but really only want that for white, straight, cis men like them. They can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. |

I know I have no way of understanding what racism feels like. I have no way of knowing what living in Aerica as a person of colour feels like. I understand that people's safety is paramount. I would have absolutely no objection to rules designed to avoid violence. That said, rules to "avoid white...presence" is, I believe, deeply problematic.
Quote below is from the rules
"Many POC moved here to be able to avoid white violence and presence, so respect their decision of avoidance if you bring white guests"

Leaving aside your opinions on what it is that Fox News/the OP want us to focus on, what is your opinion on that bit of the rules?
I didn't read the Fox article, that quote came from the New York Times. I'm making an assumption that they have correctly quoted the rules and done so in a way that isn't too partisan - this assumption may be wrong but let's face it the NYT has a far better rep than Fox. I'd be glad to hear that this isn't in fact in the rules of this place but if it is, I stand by my statement that it is problematic.

No it isn't. Your really trying to say that a woman is attacked by a man it's acceptable for her to not want men in her home is acceptable but any black person who has suffered racism from a white person isn't entitled to the same? |

I have no skin in this game so I don't feel qualified to comment on issues around race, another than to say racism is wrong. Full stop.
I have no problem with anyone who has suffered at the hands of another being afforded a safe space.
Anyone who thinks this is racist is an idiot.

I just disagree with his opinions on safe spaces in particular not being the best way to challenge prejudice, I didn’t agree with his critique of supporting BLM protests and I also didn’t like the way he used the word woke to suggest some kind of ideology.
He suggests well though. I just disagree with lots of what he said for many reasons. Which is fine. |

Mr" NY times or post ? As I'm getting post and that's a different beast
From my quick trawl of Reddit from the Post link, its an unverified set of house rules, that may have been written by the residents rather than the house itself.
In the Reddit thread itself is a comment from a whitee person who lived there. So seems the co op itself isn't discriminating.
However, experiences do seem to include some toxic ones. Including from lighter POC as well as the white redditer.
That's probably a different thread
Oh, and to really get some ppl going ... Apparently there's a vegan themed house there too.

I remember after some of my more traumatic experiences with racism, really struggling in the environment I was in, it triggered really bad anxiety and depression. I’d lock myself in my room for days as it was my safe space.
Man, what a racist, loser I was .

Why am I not surprised. My last memory of a race rant from you is you saying London is too expensive to live and literally everywhere else in the UK is too racist to live in
Race is an issue, but if that’s your mindset, or your one of these people that need a no whites safe place, consider yourself safe from me, because I wouldn’t wanna associate with someone like that anyways |

I don’t need a no white people safe space but best believe that My life is infinitely better for not knowing you IRL as I’m sure yours is too
My recollection of that interaction, on the landlords thread was actually me just saying that leaving London means considering different factors in areas including racism but also things such as the access to basic things like cultural foods, hair products and a barbershop- things I wasn’t able to access locally when I moved away for uni. Not a unique or even radical point. Pretty common actually, even amongst 18 year old students of color heading off to university and other Black people I know that consider leaving London.
That these experiences were disputed by white people in that thread was pretty frustrating but now I think it’s pretty funny. I think you’re pretty funny too fwiw. I appreciate the jokes you give me on every thread you get into ‘debates’ on. Keep doing you, T! X |

I absolutely do. So anybody guilty of such violence should be dealt with.
How does equates to banning people of a certain race from somewhere?
So you support them making their home a safe space? Great now what’s your problem with the private house referenced again?
So the white devil hoarde is going to invade and destroy them if they let them in? Stop drinking the kool aid for christ sake
Do you not see how dangerous this type of thinking is?
Kool aid. Nice.
I see how dangerous your ignorance is.
What am i ignorant about exactly? "
