When we was kids in the 70s our street was ruled by elderly women called old mother this, old mother that. Where's their successors these days?

They all went to the cupboard to fetch the poor dog a bone, can't help beyond that I'm afraid

I was thinking something like this earlier in the week. My man’s neighbours were all like that, and when my Nan and gramp were looking after me we’d pop in for a cup of tea. They’d be sat there, the women like Hilda Ogden (one had the same head scarf and rollers look) gossiping about someone and the men all seemed a bit like Andy Capp when they stood chatting over the hedge.

Lucky if a neighbour says hello to you these days.

I'm still in my childhood street and barely know my neighbours.

Things ain't what they used to be.
