Alcohol Free Beer
Jump to: Newest in thread
Getting more and more into this, often wanting to have a few at the weekend but with no risk of a hangover!
They seem to be improving all the time - can’t wait till they become a lot more regular on draft (as mainly bottles in pubs at the moment).
Tried the new Corona one last night and it was great with the usual wedge of lemon. The Guinness one is also really good.
Anyone got any recommendations? |

"Brew Dog AF IPA is nice.
Heineken 0 is OK.
I avoid Becks and all the Big Drop beers, I don't like them. "
Becks Blue is disgusting. Out of all AF beers I've tried I thought Peroni and Estrella had the nicest ones. |

"I quite like alcohol free koppaberg for this reason, having soft drinks all the time is boring taste wise"
But alcoholic koppaberg is one of those drinks that I always used to class as 'kiddie booze', like Hooch, smirnoff ice, metz etc.
Don't get me wrong. I love the stuff. But it's far easier to make a decent alcohol free drink when the original doesn't really taste like traditional booze. Much harder to do a decent job with beer or wine.
And as for those new 'alcohol free spirits'.....
Fucking awful stuff.

I find beck's absolutely fine, not sure why there is so much hate?
As mentioned, Guinness was a revelation. I genuinely couldn't believe how good it was.
San Miguel, ok, bit malty and sweet on the finish, which I'm finding on a lot of them, especially some German ones. Not great, but acceptable.
I think that's the thing though, they'll never provide that crisp, immediate response due to obvious reasons, and the taste is always 80-90% there, which is fine if you've got reasons for not drinking.

Yeah, the Brewdog IPA is a good one - just a shame it comes in those silly cans (like a lot of craft beer), a couple of swigs and it’s half gone! |

I don't like the AF beers, they all seem to have the same nasty aftertaste. The low (0.5%) beers, such as Adnams Ghostship 0.5 and Shipyard Lighthouse, are good though. There's also some nice low alcohol ciders around too. |

I dont drink alcohol but i have had the AF stuff. I like Kopperberg ciders, strawberry and lime being top of that list. The beers I find disgusting, tried a Heineken one a few years back, instant nope |

"I'd rather have a tin of shandy
The original shandy bass you use to be able to buy as a kid?"
Yeah....I'd rather drink them than any of the others mentioned. I only ever drink the likes of Stella, Grolsch or Peroni. I've always said, if it comes in a green bottle and it's European, it's lovely! If its in a brown bottle, it's shit! American lagers are awful |

Only tried an alcohol free lager once and it tasted fucking awful. The thing is, I think beer doesn't taste great as it is but people enjoy it because it gets them pissed so alcohol free beer surely just completely missed the point. |

I do wonder if I'm the only person struggling with the 'I'm a man, I drink and get pissed' undertones in sone of these comments which do feel more than a little dismissive of those of us who can't/don't/won't drink alcohol.

Becks Blue was the one that gave me a headache the next day! None of the fun, all of the drawbacks |

I just think some of the responses are a bit pathetic. The OP asked for recommendations and half the comments are macho crap degenerating people that choose not to drink alcohol.
So not offended no, more pitying of this drinking culture crap thst some people feel desperate to reinforce |

The Hoegaarden is great. Leffe not bad. Erdinger a favourite also. Basically I think wheat beers lend themselves to be booze free quite well. My beer fridge only had beer free beer in it |

Lucky saint- if you can get it on keg
Peroni 0.0
Desperados alcohol free although I only know one shop that does this
Guinness 0.0
There’s a Camden ale peanut butter alcohol free stout which is unreal! You can get it from shops around London and a few pubs.
And I like St Peter’s without.
I went 3.5 years without drinking and these helped. |

Having read my comment back, I think mine does sound like this to be fair but to be clear, I've never drank alcohol but from my experience, even the alcohol free stuff doesn't taste great |

Talk about over exaggerating… There’s one or two comments that I can see that talk about alcohol and being pissed… Not half the comments. I don’t see the issue with that either, if some people choose to only drink to get pissed then that’s their thing. I don’t see any “dismissive” or “macho crap” |

Erdinger is my favourite. Bavaria Weiss used to be, but I don't think they make it anymore.
I also like Bavaria, Corona, Moretti and Brooklyn.
I find Koppaberg too sweet, Becks tastes like sick and I'm not keen on Brewdog or St. Peter's. |

Guinness - just like the real thing.
Furstenberg - very good
Erdinger - decent
Heineken - decent
Brooklyn - very good
Most others - taste like cornflakes
Budweiser - an abomination
Aldi’s St Etienne - very very good |

You can’t please everyone my friend. And there is literally nothing to be offended about. It’s so low key in the grand scheme of things. |

Had to do this due to some medical advice most of this year, haven’t minded it too much.
Choice in bars is very limited, ciders are best and taste closer to alcoholic versions, main stream beers are mainly awful.
Foreign drinks can also be good too
Sunday mornings hangover free are ace, nights out can be a struggle when everyone else is getting belted… |

I like San Miguel 0,0 but I'll try most of them.
For anyone who doesn't get it...
I don't drink alcohol at all and haven't for many years, but I like the taste -- sometimes I just want a cold drink that isn't sweet, and the options for that are limited. |

I don’t drink lager because I like the taste, I drink it as it makes me slightly tipsy and merry.
If it’s alcohol free I might as well have lemonade. Much better flavour! |
