Aylesbury

Not so much "pimp my ride" as "modify my motor vehicle"

Used to go to Crail Raceway years ago. Sitting at the pier, McDonald's car park etc with the windows down, music bearing and chatting shit with other car dicks.

I was more of a Ford man back then. Had a couple of XR2i's

Yeah, I've been known to ruin many a car with the classic "well, whilst I'm fixing that, I can just upgrade this for only xxx pounds more, it'd be foolish not to fit the coilovers basically"

Thankfully, last time I avoided that pitfall, went for the Bilstein b12 kit instead

I've recently bought a new van for work. Slammed caddy on 19"s with coilovers. Full bodykit....the works. Looks awesome but it is horrendous to drive on our roads! I get the fear with every bump.

I used to be in quite a big way. I had a Sierra Cosworth built by Severn Valley Ford pushing out nearly 600bhp and a Courtney built Vectra 2.5 SRI. I then got into Alfa Romeo where the scene wasn't about modifying, but more about admiring.

Nowadays I generally only modify a car if something breaks or needs improving in some way. I'm also a detailing nut. I can often spend days preparing a car for ceramic coatings etc. You'll never see my car dirty.

Air ride dude, that or raise the coils a bit and drop to 18's with a bit more sidewall.

I know what you mean though, it's why I won't go 18's as the roads are just so bad.

My last Alfa had 18's and it was horrific on the North Yorkshire roads. Plus it ate its own suspension bushes for breakfast. Even fully adjustable coilovers and poly bushes couldn't help.

My corsa sxi+ 1.8 runs at 190 bhp so is pretty quick but only a 5 speed box so really noisy over 95 MPH. Have to turn the music up if I put my foot down lol

Yeah I reckon I'll need to upgrade the suspension somehow. It was completely standard before and the garage I bought it from does all the modifying in house then sells. Like I say, to look at, she's a delight but I've found myself driving cautiously.....which maybe isn't a bad thing?!

Decent coilovers will have damping and rebound adjustments that will help. Also polyurethane bushes can have a huge effect on ride quality.

Trouble is decent coilovers are quite a bit more than the 800 people like to spend on a set of BC's, and let's not even mention the ebay specials.

Spring rates, effective ride height, proper dampening, ensuring all the other bushes are tight... how many really take this into account.

Horses for courses though etc etc.

To be fair I was always more of a sleeper car modified user and car audio,as opposed to kits on the car.

Ie slapping a lotus tuned k series in my metro.

My 916 is modified but I'm slowly putting it back to standard with the exception of the brakes, hoses, suspension etc. And may leave the exhaust on

Modern classics is more my thing. But one car I have is significantly modified. Lots of subtle changes from stock to improve it for the track, including a change of its turbos and a full roll cage. My noble is rather rapid these days! Others just get modified as when thugs break, they get replaced with better parts. Then the usual, if I’m doing this, I might as well do that too!
