Souness being torn a new one by social media for commenting after a feisty game between Chelsea and spurs that refs are allowing proper challenges to go unpenalised... We've got our game back he said.... Then has to defend himself because some hadn't realised women play it too... Thoughts?

Football isn’t a man’s game but his comments were about a men’s game so I can’t see the problem.

I fucking hate Graeme Souness. Think he's a dinosaur and his opinions aren't relevant to the modern game. However... I think context is important here. He said it about a men's football match comparing it to a game that men played back in his day. If a women's match was similar to yesterday, he'd absolutely love it. I shouldn't have caused the outrage it has in my opinion

I think people would benefit if they began to see the nature of the words used rather than taking things literally.

Bold idea having to think beyond surface level

I’ll add that I hate him too. He dismantled Sir Bobby’s Newcastle team and was the start of our demise to a bottom half Premier League team but I don’t actually see anything wrong with what he has said.

What's a shame is you'd think football pundits who probably all love the game, then decided to jump on him... Aluko... Supposedly intelligent lady feeling the need to dig him out. So much that he was then required to clarify his comments. What have we become?

Yeah, that's true. It's a shame that probably having worked with him, they would know what his actual character is. I actually grew some respect for him having spoken out against homophobia in football

He was just referring to it going back to the games he enjoyed when he played…I think people look for issues now when there isn’t one.

Graeme Souness choice of words it’s a man’s game are the sort of words a man his age ( 69 ) may have said as when he played football there was hardly any women’s football and certainly not the press and television coverage it receives now.It was more of a contact sports where it was almost impossible to get sent off.It will be interesting to see if Sky allow him to keep in his job.

I’d love Graeme to be on Fab. Using Pogba as the reason he can’t get meets

I winced slightly when I heard him yesterday. I wasn't necessarily offended by the comments, I was just thinking he could have chosen a better way to express himself given that Karen Carney was covering the match alongside him.

Yeah, he's never gonna get away with that. He's forced the public to make a decision here.

I'm sure he meant man's as opposed to boys (it's men versus boys) than anything sexist ...honest.

Spot on. He is a dinosaur now and I'm a rangers man. But nothing wrong with what he said and it's actually detrimental to the woman's game to cry victim at nonsense like this.

It's a game played by cheating, primping primadonnas (of both sexes). If you want a man's game, watch rugby where the cheating is good humoured and they don't argue when caught.

Damn, a football thread got to 30 whole comments before someone spouted the usual drivel seen on every football thread a million times over. Well done on your very original thought process.

Not a fan of Souness at all, what he said was wrong, what he ment was acceptable that football played by men in the UK shoukd be a bit more physical that its allowed to be.

If it was women football and it was physical like the mens game I don't think anyone would have an issue with it. I think he mis-spoke and if he didn't who cares is an old guy with an opinion lots of people don't share. I think you need to be pretty arrogant to believe that everyone should agree with your opinion.

Did he not mean its a man's game because tackles were proper tackles and not a reference to female football.

Of course and they did very well. His observation however wasn't about the women's game. It was about the game he was commenting on. Its possible to discuss one without having to compare or conflate it with the other.
