M has been doing some pictures (not of me) anyway put his compact flash card in the reader for transfer and back in camera, a pin had come loose and got stuck in the card.
He didn't realise and put it back in the camera, bent the camera pins internally so broken his 2 month old £3,500 camera
Now commiserating... |

Have done this myself in the past - a pair of very thin long nosed pliers and you can often straighten the pins perfectly fine - I did it two years ago and 100k pics later still fine. Hope you can sort it though!

Oh dear that doesn't sound to good, I have all my camera equipment covered by an extra warranty so if I accidentally damage any of it I know it's going to be covered! It's well worth paying the extra for! |

Yeah we have all the rest of the gear covered specifically but no warranty will cover for accidental damage.

Well as it is broken anyway, nothing to lose really by trying! Just be delicate and slow with bending things!

That's what I thought, we have some very expensive Hi Fi equipment and none of that is covered for eccidental damage under the extended warranty, we had totake out specialist insurance |

The sd slot still works but the card is as you know slower and less professional. |

"When all else fails drink champagne "
CF cards may be fast, but the pin design is horrendous. Doesn't help that the card reader was crap. Bollocks bollocks bollocks.
The camera can be used, because it also has an SD card reader, but it's significantly slower. It'll do for tomorrow's shoot though.
Argh!!!!

This is one reason I try never to take the card out unless swapping it for an empty one, down load all pics from the camera via usb lead.
They can be bent back just got to be careful, put the camera down walk away have a beer or two enjoy the rest of the night and then tackle it tomorrow with a clear head and a calm mind.

I need to swap it regularly, because both of my cards regularly fill up during a shoot.

When I first got my dslr this was always my biggest fear just looking at all those pins that needed lining up in one go.
Hear it a few times on the photography forum I am on about pins getting bent, back up always needed when on a shoot.
Have you managed to sort it yet??

I've had three DSLRs with CF slots, but this is the first time I've ever used an external card reader. It's that that broke the card, and then the card broke the camera. Never again!

SD cards can be had in various speeds and the class 10 cards are faster then the best CF cards i administer 7 photographers all with the new D5 MkIII and they all use SD Eye-Fi cards no problemd with speed and all the shots go directly to the fileserver wirelesly using 802.11n
we did buy 3 WFT-E7 wireless boxes but don't waste your money |

I have two Pro Nikon DSLRs and use a Sandisk reader - more expensive but better built. The pin problem I ha before was exactly the same cause as yours but was a cheap reader!
I do a lot of Motorsport photography (just a (serious) hobby for me, but have had a few published and supply to a couple of drivers websites), so can get through a lot of cards, so am changing them all the time.

Thanks, but wifi isn't too good in the middle of nowhere. Also, it's way too slow to transfer 20Mb RAW files.

As was mentioned earlier, just get some Class 10 SD cards, cheap as chips and whilst not as fast as CF, you're unlikely to be machine-gunning it on a location shoot.
Bent/broken pins aren't usually that expensive to get fixed, if you can't do it yourself.
My 5D Mk II took a dive off a table a few weeks ago but fortunately it was insured. They offered me a Mk III but I preferred the Mk II anyway, so got another one of those. |
