A man who laced tuna with anti freeze and left bowls out for cats in his garden killed two of his neighbours cats. He received a suspended sentence. Did the punishment fit the crime or should he have got a taste of his own medicine.
TIAOTN ! |

No, that would be tantamount to state murder. He should of been imprisoned. |

They were trespassing in his garden. I'd say reasonable force was used |

Tom may be mistaken, and very occasy he is, but as he understands it ...
The majistrates court found him guilty but they chose to refer it up to the crown court for sentencing as they thought it should attract a stiffer penalty than they could impose ..
The crown court did not agree and gave a suspended sentence but to be fair, they had the social reports and more detail than the press would tell us .. |

Or be aware of the law in relation to cats as you are not allowed to put anything down to theter cats that could potentially seriously harm or kill them. Cat owners are not responsible for the cat's behaviour in the same way dog owners are. |

We've set up machine gun turrets around the perimeter. Activated by the heat signature of the common British moggie
If this fails, we'll probably end up dangling half our teenage CD collection on sticks instead |

No. Cats were introduced to Britain by the Romans. The domestic cat is native to the area around Egypt, Syria etc, where the African wildcat or related wildcats were first domesticated. The Greeks and Phonecians, who traded with North Africa, introduced cats to mainland Europe. |

It's even possible that vikings first brought cats over here on their ships when they raided our coast to plunder. Most ships had problems with rats and the cats on ships were there to catch the rats . On long voyages once all of the rats were eaten then the cat was of little use and probably would have been eaten by the crew .

Yes that's absolutely correct as cats are known to love water. That where the Scottish sporran originated when the Vikings landed there and invented the haggis. |

The British Blue (or shorthair) has origins directly back to the cats brought over by the Romans. The Norwegian forest cat dates back over 1000 years and is thought to have come from Vikings picking up cats from Britain and taking them home (cats brought originally by the Romans) and the American shorthair is descended from the British shorthair and were taken over by early settlers to the USA.
In short, whilst domestic cat breeds have evolved over time, none of them are truly native to the UK, Europe or the USA. All can be traced back to the cats brought by the Romans and those came from North Africa originally.
It's the same with squirrels. Greys are not native (from USA). Some greys have evolved to have black coats and have distinct DNA from greys. They evolved in the UK. However, they're still not native.
We killed off a lot of our native creatures in previous centuries |

I can only break this to you gently ..
These cats are dead, deceased, croaked it, gone to meet their maker, brown bread....
Even the English army who Tom rates highly cannot bring them back to life.. The army have a Royal Vetinary Corps but even they can't bring these buggers back .. They are toast...
No...all cats so this can never happen again
Well there is a growing body of these science types saying that cats should never be allowed out except on a lead because of the devestating impact they have on our native species ..
It's all over the news
Cats are a native species....globally, aren't they?
No. Cats were introduced to Britain by the Romans. The domestic cat is native to the area around Egypt, Syria etc, where the African wildcat or related wildcats were first domesticated. The Greeks and Phonecians, who traded with North Africa, introduced cats to mainland Europe.
That would mean they are not indigenous, but over time they became native.
British Blue
Norwegian Forest Cat
Short Haired American tabby
We killed off a lot of our native creatures in previous centuries
The only native cat is the wildcat.
https://www.gwct.org.uk/research/long-term-monitoring/national-gamebag-census/mammal-bags-comprehensive-overviews/wild-cat/#:~:text=The%20wildcat%20is%20Britain's%20only,with%20feral%20cats%20and%20disease."
Which we've pretty much killed off! Apparently only about 400 British wildcats meet the definition of truly being wildcats. Many have hybridised with domestic (non native) cats. |

Send in the army?
What can the army do.. the cats are dead ..
Escort the cats everywhere for safety. It's where I'd like my tax to be spent

Native yet dangerous and hence why many many science types are lobbying for cats to be kept indoors or walked outside on a lead . Tom not convinced they are domesticated or indeed make good pets .
But that's not what the thread is about .

What have the Romans done for us?
Apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”
“Brought cats.”

More info needed - are the children shitting in his garden?
On that note, should I stop eating fish from people's gardens? |

"On the idyllic island of Santorini after the tourists go home the local Council puts anti freeze about to kill all the strays the tourists preened over and photographed..."
I find that difficult to believe. It would be a very slow and painful death. I can't help feeling it would be illegal and cause the death of non strays.
The sight of stray cats in Rome made me puke ..... they were like a plague. I'd never seen so many |

I mean ........ the cat didn't drop dead in his garden so how is he caught ?
Surely the soft sod removed the tuna bowls."
He was probably caught in the act. Trouble with ethylene glycol poisoning is that it's difficult to detect as the symptoms are similar to other more common ailments. |

According to the RSPB:
"Despite the large numbers of birds killed by cats in gardens, there is no clear scientific evidence that such mortality is causing bird populations to decline."

What a relief, don't see what the birds are unhappy about. |

"A man who laced tuna with anti freeze and left bowls out for cats in his garden killed two of his neighbours cats. He received a suspended sentence. Did the punishment fit the crime or should he have got a taste of his own medicine.
TIAOTN !
They were trespassing in his garden. I'd say reasonable force was used
I'd hazard guess you don't own a pet"
I get fucked off ing my admittedly small garden and sticking my hand in cat shit. Or my kids doing similar. |
