"We've just found two false widow spiders in our conservatory. Google the little buggers...
Frisky hates spiders so she's not happy to find we've got the UKs most venomous spider in our house.... "

I like the hairspray idea....
Their webs are fairly distinctive, a mass a very sticky tangles.... A proper horror movie web, well apart from the other horror movie web that looks like a web but 6 feet across..lol

How venomous? Could it kill me? I didn't think we had any venomous spiders in this country?
I thought the most venomous thing we had was a daddy longlegs but that was ok because it's got no way of delivering its venom |

From the BBC website:
Experts say they have seen an increase in their numbers, but should we be worried?
Stuart Hine, an insect specialist from the Natural History Museum, told BBC Breakfast there are very few instances of these spiders biting people and only do so when antagonised
I suspect that getting sprayed with hairspray might antagonise one... |

From what I've read, they came over on bananas in the late 1800s. They survived on the south coast but are now spreading due to the mild winters. Their bite is likened to a bee sting. The affects can be chest pains, swelling of the fingers and tingling. In rare cases the affects can be more serious as we've seen in the papers in the last couple of weeks. There are 640 types of spider in the UK, and 12 are venomous, the False Widow accounting for 2 of them. There are currently only a few reported bites each year but this will increase as these F/widows spread. Frisky is off to the north pole..... |
