So, I'm getting solar panels on a couple of weeks.
Then I'm going to sell my car and buy an EV.
Will I be OK buying a second hand electric car? Was going to get a Leaf. |

A couple of good channels are Fully Charged Show and Electrifying.
When I looked I found this on YouTube from Rory Reid who used to be on Top Gear and now does the Auto Trader channel.

sounds like a good plan, unless you do a lot of long trips an older second hand EV should be ok |

Unless you are parked on the driveway in the daytime charging, the solar panels will not contribute to the EV. It is very unlikely the panels would provide enough buzzjuice to charge the EV anyway, so you would be pulling the most expensive electricity from the grid to charge it durin the day. Check your supplier but most of them only offer cheaper electricity from 1am to 6am. |

Have you looked at the return on investment ? I have south facing which is ideal but the ROI was awful not even anywhere near matching inflation, plus the tech in power storage isn’t good and the feed in rates offered to buy your power are very poor now. I would be interested to see you calculations if you are happy to PM them |

On a day like today probably only 30-40 but rest of the year maybe 5-10 thousand ? |

It doesn't work like that. The house is still connected to the grid and you effectively sell the electricity you produce and buy any extra you need. When she plugs her car into a 7kW charger on a dull winter day she will of course be needing grid electricity. In return on a long sunny summer day when she's chucking out 15kW or more (depending on the size of the instalation) that output will be coming off her bill. With enough panels what she sells canceks out what she buys though this cost balance will be affected by things like the higher cost of electricity in the winter when her output will be very low.
More to the point, what she makes (again depending on instalation size) coul be equal to or more than she uses so her electricity use become carbon net zero.

Electric cars are great I have a e2008
I few things to consider my quoted range is 220 miles but with a bit of motorway driving I would say 180 would be good
Cold weather really drops the range
Also being able to fast charge while your out.my car will charge at 100 kw so about 30 mins for a good charge
With solar panels they will help a little but think of all the things that are already operating in the house that will be using the power from the panels that will help a little bit remember only a little

Out of curiosity, if the OP had posted that they were buying a new Fiesta would you have posted questioning the size?
There are genuinely good reasons why an EV isn't (as yet) a viable solution for lots of people but that is true of all kinds of things. However, unlike many choices people make, whenever someone mentions even a passing interest in getting an EV, there are a number of forum users that feel the need to explain why they an EV wouldn't work for them. It comes across as very negative and defensive- not to mention a little bizarre.

I’ve not a clue what gemma pays she sorted it all before I met her but the car charging at home is about £9 with solar panels at a charge unit it’s juts under £6 so way cheaper than petrol either way it still cheaper to go out |

Hi OP,
I had a plug in hybrid.
One issue with battery vehicles is that the ability to hold a charge degrades over time. A very old EV will not hold as much charge as a new one.
Now this may not matter if you are just doing in town driving. But if you live in the country or drive long distances can be an issue.
Otherwise normal advice on second hand cars applies.

I use about 1800kw a year - I'm a low user. I'm looking at 12 panels which should generate double that. It should cover the charging in the summer. I'm with Octopus and looking at their smart EV chargers. In the winter, I'll use their cheap night rate if they're hasn't been enough sunshine in the day to charge it. |

I take it that includes installation and all the charge controllers.
What type of panels are they going to supply?
Have you thought about battery storage.

Very important that the battery pack is in really good working order you can lose serious range if that is any sort of problem with the battery make sure it holds a good solids charged before you give them any money.... |

Yeah - in terms of cost I guess it really depends on the deal you have with the supplier. If she can sell what the panels generate at a higher price than you pay at a fast charger then it's a bonus - just the inconvenience of driving to get a charge.

How many miles do you drive. On cost/benefit how does 12k panels, plus a 10k ev/£450 a month lease work out against a tidy small petrol car.
I ask as I drive a £3K golf with £20 road tax and can’t see any financial benefit to commit to £20k or financed equivalent, for the 4000 odd miles I drive annually. |
