Why are hurricanes usually named after women

They're not. The naming is A-Z each year, and goes M-F-M-F or vice versa, depending on the A name.
They have a set list of names for each year, for every storm zone, and when they've used them all they just start the list again. The Atlantic zone, for example, gets repeated every seven years. Sadly my dreams of one day there being a Hurricane Nobby will never come to pass .
This year they've already had Hurricane Colin, and they will have Hurricane Ian later in the season. Sounds like they pick boring names in case they turn out to be devastating, but there are some snazzier ones in there.
If my life were to be destroyed by a Cat 5 storm I'd prefer it to be by Hurricane Humberto or Yolanda, rather than by Hurricane Kevin or Fred. |
