For those of you not involved in the gas industry you may or may not be aware that as registered professionals we have to take and pass accreditation exams every five years. So having just (3 weeks ago) taken and passed mine imagine my surprise at being invited (gas safe term for mandatory) to attend a virtual inspection, designed to check that my knowledge is current - wtf is the accreditation for if not this. Another 1/2 day lost more exams to achieve what exactly. If this was mid accreditation cycle fine but literally a few weeks after - pointless.

It does seem a bit silly, but there are plenty of us in businesses where we get "invited" to do top-up training that we don't need. I'm sure it's about somebody else's KPIs.

Could it be a bit like when people takes driving tests for others? Making sure nobody is doing any cheating or illegal activity?

My department sat through a 2 hour twilight INSET explaining the new teacher pay grades that had absolutely nothing to do with us whatsoever.

The Head's Secretary came to us afterwards and said it was a waste of time us being there.

We could have used those hours making new resources or training for something useful.

There's so many checks and balances during and then the results are sent to an independent auditor to check to confirm your assessor assessment.

I have had two phone calls from the NHS blood donation team asking if I'd like to make my next appointment, even though I made it as soon as I gave my last donation.

Good. That makes me - the customer - feel safer that checks are done. It's one thing swatting up and passing exams it's another retaining the knowledge and using it.

Perhaps it was not a test on you but a test on your department to randomly test personnel and see if their training programmes are working.

I think it's a positive thing.

Try not to take it personally.

I've had a letter from NHS telling me that they're going to send me a bowel cancer testing kit in the next couple of weeks. Why not just send the flaming kit

I'll be honest given the potehtial implications if you get things wrong, do you think you should you be less regulated?

No tbh and I have no problems with being tested, it just seemed a waste of time given the closeness to the accreditation exams. The accreditation is done via a third party centre of which they receive regular audits, so in general I'd say the system is very robust

I'd hope it's an independent body from the accreditation company doing a random check on the companies standards. If it's the same company then there's something wrong.

As said before, it's not a personal thing, just another hoop to jump through. At least you'll be golden for a few more years after this.

As for left hands not talking to right hands in the NHS - I've been invited for smear tests TWICE by my GP practice. Think about it.....
