Apparently, they plan this to be a big event, an extra day of live music to celebrate 20 years of the event.

That'll be a four day festival, instead of the usual three.

A couple of questions .........

One for fun ...... Anyone possibly planning on going?

One for advice ...... Has anyone experience in the RIP packages?

I'm wondering if they're worth it, and which could be the better option.

I've got my ticket.

Will be my first time and I'm incredibly excited yet mega nervous at the same time.

As it stands I have a ticket and nothing else. Need to do some serious saving.

I'd do RIP if I could afford it, purely based on comfort.

I'm looking at going depending on line up.

A friend of mine did RIP last year and if you've got the money it really does look worth it. Personally I couldn't afford it so will likely look at staying in Derby again.

I’m going next year, loved being back this year.

I’m tempted by RIP, have friends that do it and they would never go back to council camping

My only reservations about RIP are the price and the fact that the people I normally camp with can’t afford it, so I’d be a bit more separated from them

Oh, and it’s 4 days of music instead of 3… it’s actually a 5 day festival as a lot camp from the Wednesday

Of course, there's also the RIP entertainment too, usually begins the day before.

Though the main event is normally the three days.

Does that work out well?

Assuming you stay at a hotel and travel each day?.

I've done this before at the Leeds festival.

Strangely, it was there that led me here all those years back

We paid £50 each a night for where we stayed and Download put on a bus from Derby train station for £12 a day or £30 for all three days I think it was.

Trying to think who would be headliners on these dates. The fact it's a anniversary maybe Slipknot. They love a slot at Download.

Also it's been over 10 years since Rage Against the Machine have played Download...

I'm thinking Metallica may be one headliner.

Maybe Aerosmith or Motley Crue.

Prodigy or Muse.

Guns n Roses or Ac/DC, for the others three nights.

Year I seen them at Download they played every song on the Black Album. If night 1 or 2 they wanted to play the full Master of Puppets album that wouldn't be the worst.

Cant imagine much worse than standing in a field with 100 thousand others pushing and shoving for 12 hours a day for 4 days, unable to get clean and going bankrupt from food and drink costs. Plus travel

The layout for the stages hasn’t changed for quite a while, can share a map if people are interested…

The campsites and village layout was much changed this year and seemed to work pretty well so I’d imagine the layout will stay the same next year. Village was on hard standing so no chance of it turning into a swamp like previous years

Yeah, quiet camp was moved to alongside the village along the back of where the doghouse stage was set up. That was a very bizarre decision and could maybe see that moving to the other side of purple.

Camp Loner?

It’s a separate(ish) section of one of the normal campsites, was in the corner of Black this year, and it fills up really quickly.

If you’re going solo then I’d recommend joining their Facebook group, even if you can’t actually get into their section you can still organise to meet up with fellow solo campers….

… or we could sort out a like minded get together on here

I’ve stayed in most of the on-site options and if you are ok with camping in general then RIP camping is amazing if they still let you park next to your tent. That alone is worth the extra money for me. Plus back stage/ RIP access and loos that flush water.

For headliners it looks like it will be...

Metallica

Ozzy

Pantera

Slipknot

.

Corey Taylor all but confirmed their appearance at a horror convention last week.

Ozzy is subject to health permitting but he's doing ok and I am told BMTH and Parkway Drive will be 'bumped up' pending an Ozzy no show.

Many hoping for Rammstein, Def Leppard and Crue to appear but they seem to be tied in to other tours etc...

.

Are RIP packages worth it? As I say I have worked there a few times and enjoyed RIP facilities the last couple of times and it does make life 'easier'. Its cost. Simple as that. if money is no object then get a RIP package. If watching the pennies do it on the cheap and 'ruff it' for a few days.

All the promotional material states 4 days of music, so that’s 4 days in the Arena guaranteed.

Can’t see Ozzy headlining personally, he’s not done more than a couple of lip synced songs in over 3 years so there’s no way he’s in any shape to do a couple of hour slot.

Slipknot are pretty much 100%, lots of rumours about Metallica headlining 2 nights so I’d say they’re pretty much guaranteed to be there. Also seen BMTH mentioned as a headliner too

Well, like I say, the Ozzy is very much subject to health - but - the prognosis from the Osbourne camp seems mainly positive with recent medical procedures deemed a 'success' but I know what you're saying. I'm not that hopeful myself. But yes BMTH are tipped to top if no Ozzy with I guess the festival needing to find younger headliners.

Don't worry about Ozzy needing to lip-synch. They nearly ALL do it. Have done for years with greater or lesser 'help' from tracks being piped in. Not all. A few like Metallica are fully live save a few intro tracks.

But the people who work there are 'understanding' that is the 'intended' line up as i list. But these things can change.

He's doing a European/UK tour in May/June 2023, and there are gaps where he could fit in a Download set. However, he is never playing two nights in a row, so it would be strange.

This was correct! BMTH on Friday, Slipknot on Sunday, and two different Metallica sets on Thursday and Saturday.

Well partially age and partially that we hate camping! Plus it’s mega expensive this year so not sure would be worth it. Will still hang on for day splits and hope the ones we like are on the same day/s!

"Metallica twice is a bit of a let down...how many more times do I really need to see them play?!"

Maybe a different perspective may help.

How many more times would you get to see them? We're all knocking on and could drop down dead at any given time. Every day we live is a day closer to our last.

So, be humble and even though you may not want to just yet, try to appreciate.

"Metallica twice is a bit of a let down...how many more times do I really need to see them play?!"

My perspective is this, there are other bands to see and other things to do if you don’t want to watch a headliner.

Last year I spent Kiss’s set halfway up the hill laughing and joking with friends about the absurdity of it all and the cheesiness of their set.

If headliners are the be all and end all for someone then perhaps a festival isn’t for them

For me the "same old same old" top bands.

Not enough bands to tempt me.....

The promoters seem very un-creative to me? Yes, Effervescence (yes, I know I've spelt it wrong!) Tick. Within Temptation tick. No Nightwish? No Scorpions - they just released a n album not so long ago -brilliant live band. No Mammoth WVH? Tesla? Dokken?

Surely it can't be COVID can it?

God I could do with seeing a decent gig!

I roughly priced up a trip to Amsterdam for the 2 night show & it added up to about 8-900, assuming you don't go for one of the big packages. I'm sticking to just download next year. Maybe I'll see if there are still tickets in 2024 & try again

London/Essex... ish... Romford to be exact

I'm excited about the lineup but then I'm a fan of all the headliners. However, I haven't been since 2015. Ive aged a lot since then. Not sure I can handle four days of camping and the moshpit. I know the obvious solution would be not to join in the moshpit but it always seems to open up around me and like a moth to a flame I seem to be drawn into it. I still have a few months to decide.

Is there going to be a Fab group? I know it's always hard to organise these things. Maybe a Fab Kik or WhatsApp group? Is reception improved at these large gatherings these days? In case you can't tell, if I do go, I don't wanna be left alone

I've been previously with mates who split after Limp Bizkit and also the Offspring and later found em back in the tent with the hump as I had wandered too far into the centre apparently.

Same. Couldn't believe not a single friend was up for it. I need new friends obviously. I have now arranged a meet to soften the blow that weekend. I reckon I will just be laying there still thinking about Slipknot, BMTH, Parkway Drive etc before she inevitably asks me 'hun, what's up?' as I let out a deep sigh in response.

How do you get to stay in the guest area? I assumed that was for bands & vips
