Three guests check into a hotel room. The receptionist says the bill is £30, so each guest pays £10. Later the receptionist realises the bill should only be £25. To rectify this, he gives the porter £5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the porter realises that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the porter decides to just give each guest £1 and keep £2 for himself.
Now that each of the guests has been given £1 back, each has paid £9, bringing the total paid to £27. The porter has £2. If the guests originally handed over £30, what happened to the remaining £1?

It's the difference between cost and expenditure. The room cost £25 or £8.33 each. They paid £30 and got £1 each back = £27. The difference between the cost of the room (£25) and what they paid (£27) is £2. The porter kept the £2.
Not 'government accounting' - basic maths. |

They have only paid the hotel £25 for the room.
Each had £1 back = £3
Porter had £2
Total =£5
Gets you back to £30.
As Steve says the difference on the expenditure is in the porters pocket |

"Wants to know where you can get a hotel room for 25 pounds a night!!!"
Paid £20 for one just outside Luton the other week - ensuite too. And have just booked one in Birmingham for £26.
If you look - you find! |

"Basically, the porter has fleeced them of £2 as they have now overpaid for their room.
Funny...you said it was government accounting. Not a coincidence you post AFTER the answer."
Oh gosh, allow me to offer my profound apology for cracking a joke.
