Branded v Supermarket Version

Due to everything costing around £692 quid atm I decided to try some cheaper versions of stuff that I normally buy branded ..
The results aren't important but my question is are people turning more towards cheaper supermarket own brand and are some or all of them just as good ??

"I strongly suspect that people will turn to cheaper own brand stuff. Some of it is excellent but as I said elsewhere I won't buy own brand flour, cereals or cat food. "
I don't buy the own brand cereals either, takes like wet cardboard.
But for bread, pasties, pies, chips, pizza etc they are good. |

I don't buy supermarket brand bread, refried beans, mayonnaise or baked beans. Can't think of anything else - I switched to own brand years ago. Lidl in the main. It's all fine. |

There’s not a lot on my food shopping that even has a brand but those that do I tend to go with unbranded apart from things like Sella rice, olive oil, coffee beans, herbal teas. Decades of cooking from scratch I’d probably find branded foods taste very sweet and artificial with flavours added etc.
I have experimented with branded tins of tomatoes , tomato purée , stock cubes, porridge oats, honey , maple syrup and natural yoghurt and couldn’t tell the difference by the time it was in food |

There's not much difference between supermarkets own and branded stuff. The only brand I won't compromise on is rola cola, that stuff tastes like the devil. Otherwise non branded stuff are perfectly fine for me. |

Most off marks and Spencer’s finest biscuits are the same as Tesco Asda and all the rest vaule biscuits
I use to work in a biscuit factory years go packing
And line wouldn’t stop the only thing that changed was the wrapping
I use to get a kick out off walking past them in M and S and seeing them at like £3.99
And knowing they the exact same as Tesco 99p vaule brand |

I have switched somethings but so far beanz means Heinz. For me no other baked bean comes close. Some own brands cost a lot less than a branded item but you have to use 3 times as much, this goes for soap, washing up liquid and things like that |

Some stuff tastes okay supermarket own branded.
Some stuff tastes vile and cheap and isn't worth skimping on.
You can still save money buying branded stuff if you learn to shop well and buy extra when it's on a true discounted offer and store it instead. |

The only branded item I insist on buying is Bisto... Other than that I tend to buy own brands and do my shops in Aldi, Lidl and a couple of local farm shops... |

Aside from baked beans, we’ll pretty much eat most supermarket own food.
Been a butter snob for years until last week! Tried Tesco own version of the millionaires favourite, lurpak! We’re converted! It’s actually nicer!!! |

There's loads of toiletries, cosmetics etc where cheaper brands are just as good, if not better.
I've also started cooking much more from scratch..used to but fell away from it. Veg is veg pretty much so brands don't matter. |

Aldi used to do their own version of naked bars called Paleo. Absolutely gutted when they got scrapped.
Vast majority of things I buy in supermarkets are the shops own brand. |

"I'm not sure Harrods do own brand.
But the Harvey Nicks things I've had have been reasonable.
Harrods certainly used to do own brand stuff."
Food stuff? Not just the teddies and pens and all that jazz?
I'm actually excited by this. Which is weird because why would I be when I don't shop there and haven't been there since 2007?
I'm weird. |

Depends on what exactly you're making. A previous employer's M&S bars were entirely different to bars they made for other people, but not in a way a consumer would notice - they'd taste the same.
For standard bars they used standard triple washed raisins. M&S A list raw materials standards won't accept less than 4 washes, and they name the growers, processors and resellers that can be used to guarantee that.
It's a similar story on oats, chocolate, cinnamon, cocoa (a million more but they are the ones that stand out to me as they were a ball-ache to buy and were horribly more expensive than standard).
I ended up with a duplicate ingredients store that was M&S specific. |

Yes Teabags can't be skimped on I agree with that |

The only things I won’t change is Heinz baked beans and tomato ketchup or full fat red can of cola, the other stuff / brands just don’t do it for me.
Everything else is just as good and sometimes tastes better than it’s more expensive counterpart, but not always. If you want a treat then do the switch, it might not be as tasty as what you are used to but it still does the job.

Their Beans are every bit as good.
Their Ketchup was OK.
And the cheaper butter was good ..

This kind of topic is always subjective. One person’s meat is another person’s poison. There are own brand products that I like and ones that I don’t regardless of the supermarket.
I won’t swap my coffee and it always has to be Quaker porridge oats, others just don’t come close. I find that some people assume that because a product comes from Waitrose or M&S then it must be far superior to a similar products from other supermarkets. This isn’t always true. |

I worked in food manufacturing for 18 years and the brand vs own brand is a scam, we used to make pork pies for numerous supermarkets & walls own & all we did was changed the wrapping.
A lot of people don't realise that supermarkets don't have their own factories, they contract their products to large manufacturers & sometimes they have their own recipes but it can be costly & time consuming to make up separate batches per customer so they mostly use a standard recipe. |

I am lucky I live right near sainsburys, tesco Homebargains and aldi so I go all over just because I like certain things from the different shops.
I go to aldi for razors and laundry liquid
Sainsburys and Tesco for food
Homebargains for cleaning stuff and anything else
I personally don’t buy a lot of processed type foods other than ketchup, bbq sauces and a few other condiments. I just buy meat, veg and rice I do buy the own supermarket brand rice and their bread.
Things I wouldn’t buy own brand would be toiletries, shower gel, deodorant etc other than Aldi’s Lacura disposable razors (they’re really good)
Cleaning stuff I sometimes do depends sometimes the branded stuff is on offer and just as cheap as the own brand.

I thought the same about toiletries. I'd only ever use Dove deodorant for example.
In the first lockdown I wasn't leaving the flat or seeing anyone so I decided to give different products a try and actually my favourite is now Asda own brand, less than a quid a tin. |

One own brand to buy is Aldi’s soup… Heinz makes it and it look and tastes exactly the same for a fraction of the price.
Bread is bread, never go for the “plastic” stuff, go for one that’s made in store and ask them to cut it, if you’re single like me, then freeze it, less waste and it will defrost pretty quickly or you can toast it from frozen
I had to buy own brand things when I went bankrupt years ago, I found there was quite a lot of things I liked surprisingly. |
