Haggling in an art gallery

Has anyone here bought art from a gallery before. And if so, did you haggle?

We're potentially buying something tomorrow, but if we can get a couple of quid off then why wouldn't we. We're just not sure if it's the done thing.

Any help or insight appreciated.

Thanks

Of course it is, haggle for anything you can. It's almost expected these days even in some unsual places and well known shops. Go for it. Let us know how you get on. Just use your charm

I've been at an showing where an artist has defended their pricing and stated they would prefer to lose the sale, than to devalue their work, no matter the discount, and potentially negatively impact their previous customer satisfaction if they learnt that they were discounting their work.

It was interesting to listen to, so i didn't ask for discount despite purchasing two fairly expensive pieces. Everything is relevant

Edit.. It wasn't a gallery though, it was direct from the artist.. But they also run the gallery and exhibit with an assortment of artists.. The pricing was the same - direct, online, gallery

Very useful, guys, thanks.

I'm not sure we'd have the balls to haggle with the artist, but I don't want to cough up the money and feel like I could have gotten away with not paying full the price.

Will give it a go and see how we get on.

I've never bought from an art gallery but there can't be any harm in asking if there's any room for movement on the price and graciously paying up if the answer is no. Have a price in mind to offer though say 10 or 5% less.
