Probably about 40+ hours after a cancelled flight, so a detour flight that resulted in lost luggage which lead to a missed coach and having to get a connecting flight the following day, I was very emotional and crying with tiredness, hopefully never to be repeated |

I stayed up one night to watch Wrestlemania 17 live, The Rock v Stone Cold for the title
Was on the vodka red bulls to keep me awake for it, it finished 5am and I had work at 9am.
I didn't bother going to bed, after lunch time it felt like I was hallucinating. Had the shakes and every time I looked at an excel spreadsheet felt like I was going to throw up.
Never did that again! |

24 hours plus is common for me as I work some nights. My longest is probably somewhere over 50 - I spent over 47 hours completing a race plus getting to the start and photos/kit sorting at the end. I tried to get a kip on the first night and may have managed a few minutes.

I think about 72 hours, ish. The odd attempted nap but caffeine put those attempts to bed, ironically.
Third year deadlines and poor planning are to blame, I looked like death at the end, literally had people concerned, blurry vision etc.
Fantastically stupid in retrospect, slept for 24 hours straight to recover, then I was ill for a week.
Joy. |

"64 hours with 3, 20 minute power naps in that time. Adrenaline kept me going but by the end I was delirious."
It's funny how sleep deprivation affects you. Many ultra racers talk of hallucinations. My memory of my race includes a big section of track past an industrial site with orange sodium lamps glowing in the fog along a chain link fence topped with barbed wire. I picture this clearly every time I think of that night even though I know for a fact the track I was on was crossing the Yorkshire moors with not a single light in sight anywhere

30 hours. 2 weeks of night shifts Monday to Friday. Last Friday had plans with my mum on the Saturday so met her after, then off for drinks before heading home. They certainly weren't the best idea.
Did the same on a different night shift, last shift, met my best friend went for brekkie, looking forward to a cuppa. Ended up with tea and coffee in the same mug.
I'm 1 person who needs sleep!
It's never a pretty sight if I don't have enough |

I volunteered for an experiment in the army in the mid 80's to see how long a platoon could function without sleep.
Within 36 hours people were dozing off, hallucinations were frequent and total communication had broken down with 50 hours. It was called off then because people started to drop like flies.
If we were not doing such physical work and patrolling and such I think we could of all gone on for longer.
And I only spent 16 hours sleeping afterwards and was nice and refreshed for the two weeks leave we got from it |

It was something approaching 2 days. I don't know the exact times but my head was in a funny place by the time I got some sleep. Although in my old job that was uncommon to do those hours when setting up a blank new location. Everyone else couldn't do their job until I'd set everything up and got it working stable for them first. So the pressure was always on in the first couple of days to get those critical services online as soon as possible.

However this constant 5am starts in London and midnight finishing and driving back to Luton had a detrimental effect on my health.

Just under 4 day's when my mum was dying, sat at her bedside, only leaving to shower and change clothes.
Even after the end only slept for a couple of hours a night.
Two days after I came down with COVID extremely bad and was nearly a goner myself, one of the side effects I had was insomnia.
By the end of week 3 from mum's illness and death then my illness and being on the brink I was hallucinating some strange stuff.
Only sleeping in 5 - minute bursts every few hours.
To this day one of the effects of long covid is sporadic insomnia followed by intense bursts of exhaustion. |

Once did a 56 hour shift for a deadline (cos i worked for a shitty company that didn't seem to notice that two of us hadn't left the building, changed clothes and looked like zombies).
Ended up hallucinating by the weekend (yes, we stupidly worked in to that too) and had to call someone else in to finish off.
Turned up 10 minutes late on the Monday, got a bollocking for timekeeping |

"Once did a 56 hour shift for a deadline (cos i worked for a shitty company that didn't seem to notice that two of us hadn't left the building, changed clothes and looked like zombies).
Ended up hallucinating by the weekend (yes, we stupidly worked in to that too) and had to call someone else in to finish off.
Turned up 10 minutes late on the Monday, got a bollocking for timekeeping "
Wow that was very ungrateful off them after you going that extra mile for them |

"Over 40 for me
I was up early for an appointment, couldn't get back to sleep before my night shift, then went straight from my night shift to ibiza and stayed awake until about 9pm so my sleep pattern would be the right way around for the rest of my holiday "
Awww did you have a good holiday though |

About 40 hours.. I don't remember what happened but I remember us shouting at my friend's younger sister to go back to bed then we realised it was 7am and we had been up all night. We then had school that day. |
