It already has. We used to go for random drives on a weekend and with the cost of fuel we’ve stopped that. We shop at Aldi a lot more and we’re looking for bargains a lot more than usual.
We are quite lucky that we both have reasonable paid jobs but I hate to think how it is effecting single parents or people on benefits. |

I’m worried what going to happen when the energy price goes up in October |

I am so frightened for low income families this winter when the lights have to go on early and its freezing. The quality of life sat in the dark cold & hungry is brutal. I'm afraid to say lives will be lost

It might because good idea here or in a new thread if people posted about any real bargains they might come across that saved money from day to day expenses that others might benefit from too. Just a thought |

It’s disgusting that this is even allowed to happen. A household with 2 working parents should never really have to struggle but that’s the way it’s heading. A lot of people are going to be plunged into poverty and nothing will be done about it. |

Yes it is. We already know we will have to decrease the hours we have heating on in the winter, consider cooking time, look carefully at our food shopping etc. We'll probably cut down on trips out too |

It wasn’t too long ago only one parent had to work and now two might not even be enough to survive. |

No it won't because a population that's spending all its time just trying to survive is much easier to influence.

Everyone gets £400 towards energy bill from October (I think it's monthly installments)
I have those pre pay meters, so I assume the credit will go straight on?
Inflation, energy, food prices, Xmas, it's going to be a difficult winter |

They won't until inflation slows and wages increase to meet it.

Things like bin bags, foil and cling film can be a lot cheaper at either Poundland or Wilkos rather than supermarket chains. |

I’m shitting myself. There’s already too much month left at the end of the money, but the bills just about get paid.
We’re already cutting back on fun stuff, and I’m already skipping meals. Meals are cooked in a microwave. Heating has stayed off, and will do for the coming cold spell too. It simply won’t be affordable to have it on.
On the plus side….my skipped meal lifestyle will aid my slimming further. |

Yes would argue with that. My energy supplier tried to raise my dd to over £500 even though my spent last year according to their own figures was less than £80pm. Needless to say ot did not happen |

Always been conscious of what I do to be fair. I have a well insulated house, so very lucky in that regard and my gas bills last winter were only £6-9 a month, basically just used to hear water. I imagine the same will apply this year.
I try to keep electricity costs down, things turned off at the wall so not on standby etc. But do run expensive equipment 24 hours a day for fish tank, so that is hurting the wallet.
Generally I am ok, I live alone so benefit from being able to look after myself and not worry about if someone else is cold or hungry or needs something, again, quite lucky. Plus when ordering takeaways it is only for one, so that doesn't really count anyway

If heating is going to difficult due to the prices. Before it gets cold and prices of them increase, look at electric blankets. I have one for the sofa and I sit under it so I don't have to heat the whole room. |

The annoying thing is that this so called cost of living crisis has been going on for 12 years and no one seemed to care as it only effected "Them" and now it's effecting everyone not lucky enough to be in the 10% it hits the headlines and the news progs but scary time ahead for a large majority of people but the chickens have finally came home to roost in the UK and just wait till the % rises start ?? and we've always lived fairly simple lives but have cut back but this is a prime time example of a saying Mr4 was taught in school " You might not take a interest in politics ...BUT....politics will take a interest in you " and sadly that bloke called Jeremy's whacky way out to silly unaffordable ( look at national debt now and £1 trillion before covid even hit ) ideas won't seem so ....and be another case of the throwing money at the problem and enriching the rich just like after the Banking crisis and our mate dave took over xxx |

Not all that North of North London |
4 pints of milk in my local tesco is £1.65, at the start of the year it was £1. All most all the offers have gone, inflation on essential food products is way higher than people on low incomes or with low disposable incomes can afford |

We're quite lucky in that I started a new job and the increase combined with no longer paying in to a salary sacrifice means my disposable income has increased by over £200 so in the short term we can absorb the increases costs with minimal impact.
We are already being far more frugal though |

The cost of living is affecting everyone in a really negative way. If income reflected the cost of living then it wouldn't matter, but income inflation rates are lower than expenditure inflation rates, and this is never a good thing for anyone but the fat controllers of society. |

Like everyone the increase in the cost of living has meant that I am being more careful how I shop. I regularly make a mental note of fuel prices for when I need to fill up the car. I have used Lidl a lot more recently (but it doesn't have the choice). I am constantly reminding the kids to turn off their bedroom light and open the curtains during daylight hours (lol). we have a good household income and can (hopefully) manage any price increases but I do worry for those that can't but mindful of scammers.
I do wonder what would happen if the war suddenly stopped. Energy prices returned to 'normal' (well lower than they are now) and food prices reduced etc. Would we go back to pre pandemic prices? My gut feeling is probably not. Once we have all had pay rises to pay for the increased cost of living we wont give it up if the cost of living goes down, which means we have more spare money to spend which in turn leads to yet more inflation and interest rate rises. This mess is going to take some working out! |

I live in a turn of the century (as in 2000s. Fuck I'm old) apartment block so it's usually not too bad, but I'm going to cut my heating right down this winter (particularly as I only have storage heaters), so I'll be using lots of layers.
(The electric blanket I got was from Lakeland, although now discontinued. I also have a giant merino wool blanket that I found in a charity shop. Brilliant nick, £15) |

"Does anyone have storage heaters and would you recommend them?"
My elderly neighbour has them. They warm up at night which is good for sleeping on cold nights. But they cool down by around 8pm so he goes to bed early and puts the electric blanket on. Don't know about costs. |

Expensive to run, only suitable for flats where you can't have gas. Inflexible, you need to decide the night before if you turn them on then you're set for the day. Necessitates an economy 7 or similar tariff which means you pay a premium during the day.
Not really, but I live in a flat |

"Most of my savings aren't cost of living related, and they're helping me not have to change too many things so far.
One change I've made is to cook almost exclusively with the slow cooker, to save electricity.
I got an air fryer after reading a thread on here. It's been really useful so far.
I do batch cooking in winter. "
My air fryer is fantastic. So pleased I got one. I cook things in 1/3 or more less time and it heats up in a couple of minutes. Brilliant. |

"And now the Bank of England which is a bank in England, United Kingdom have just announced the biggest interest rate rise in 25 years. They’re predicting inflation will hit 13% and we will head into a deep recession.
What’s going on here guys?
What’s going is my skipping more food to keep the bills paid, and my ladies fed. "
I'm so sorry to hear that Keyser. |

At the moment it hasn't really stopped us doing anything that we would normally do. I think from October onwards this will change. We have done a financial Audit and cancelled anything we didn't use or make the most of and renegotiated some of The things we were out of contract with and that has saved us a considerable amount each month. I've always been very careful with money and will continue to do so. |

We've got a dual air fryer. As an example I cooked four sausages and frozen chips in about twelve minutes last night. There's an awful lot more you can do with them from cakes and scones to joints of meat and roast vegetables and dehydrating fruit etc. I don't know how cost effective they are, at a guess I'd say you wouldn't save a lot. |

I need to look at the fuel bills and compare but I bought it almost as soon as I moved house. All of the info I've read indicates that it will save money as you're heating a smaller space and pre-heats much much quicker, uses less cooking time and turns itself off. That's why I purchased mine. The bonus is that it doesn't boil my kitchen in hot weather! |

What central banks always do. Crash the economy and consolidate wealth in fewer and fewer hands...
But hey! We live in a democracy and not an autocracy. That counts for something doesn't it? |

I’m going to burn a shit ton of wood that I can get free of charge to keep warm. I seek out the yellow stickers in supermarkets
There is a lady on my street who has a young daughter. They cannot afford WiFi and use the neighbours often sitting out in the cold to do their daughters homework. I worry for people like that. I don’t really know her and feel weird about offering them a warm room and WiFi to use anytime they want as they may be proud. I don’t really speak to them. |

Lucky enough to have two incomes. Rosie has had to pick up full time hours instead of part time and we have made adjustments to our lifestyle and cut out some extras. We are able to manage (just) by being careful and planning, but I do fear for single-income households |

Paid off our mortgage last year.
Only buying things we need rather than we want.
Shop more at lidl and aldi and avoid the other shops.
Trying to save more now and work more overtime for the fuel increase. |

13% inflation, 200-300% on energy costs, 700% increase in interest rates over 6 months
Extra national insurance, 32% increase on corporation tax from April, deferred state pension, 6 million waiting on hospital treatment, record 2.1 million foodbank meals, £1.5TRN added to national debt by Tories, mortgage affordability tests scrapped, over £1000 a month average rents, 14% increase in bankruptcies, 61% increase in company voluntary arrangements, tens of billions pounds more covid loans to be written off.
Amazon workers on strike today, been offered 35p an hour pay rise.
What a mess, and outlook is dire. |

Well I’m contracted to 4 x12 hour shifts a week but at my hourly rate that’s not enough to pay all my bills. So now I do 5 or 6 shifts a week just to survive.
I’m exhausted but it’s hard running a single person household. Son is back from uni for the summer so paying more out for food, gas, electric etc.
Luckily I can eat l food at work so I don’t really buy food for myself at home and my mum did a big shop for my son a couple of weeks ago. |

With the rise in standing charges, people aren't going to save as much as they think by not having the hearing on. It will cost a fair whack just to be connected to the grid come October.
Unless the regulator intervenes, energy companies will keep on hiking the standing charge to ensure their profits aren't hit by people using less. If our energy infrastructure was in public hands and not run for profit, we would not be at the mercy of rapacious vulture capitalists. |

This plus it was announced today that it's likely the energy companies are going to be able to raise the price cap every 3 months. |

Ours isn't open on Wednesdays for some reason. Lots of businesses close all day Wednesday or half day here, still. It's like 1973! Our library has only just gone back to "normal" opening hours of 10-4 or 10-5. It was previously a "pop up" one in a room in a community centre and open two days a week. |

This is the part that really pisses me off. Paying silly money just to be connected is obscene. Yes, there’s a need for a small charge to cover operating costs but people should be free to save where they can and or want to. |
