You can't just place the securing bracket anywhere on the ceiling, the top fixing needs to be placed upon a ceiling joist or no matter how much you tighten the stiffening device, the pole will be loose and wobble and fall over.

Hope that helps

You need to find your ceiling joists, usually 18 inches apart, but does vary.

Knock your ceiling with your knuckles, and move across the ceiling, if it sounds hollow all the time you are running in line, so go across, until your knocking sounds more solid.

Do this up and down, marking where it sounds most solid with a pencil, from both sides, then knock a nail in between the marks, you should hit a joist, if the nail goes in easy, and you can pull it out easy, you have missed the joist.... simples!!

Or you can buy a joist finder, fairly cheap from most DIY stores, usually sold as a pipe or cable locator, but does find wooden joists too.

Word of warning, look out for where your ceiling light cables might run, or else you might get an affro hairstyle lol!!

So, does this pole have a bracket to screw to the ceiling, or does it "expand" when you twist it, so you kinda "jam" it between the floor and ceiling?

The wires for your lights (usually) are in a straight line from one wall, depends where the switch is.
