When was the last time someone was charged with treason in the UK?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Today, the answer is today.
A man allegedly found with a crossbow in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Christmas Day has been charged under the Treason Act.

"When I heard this.. all I could think off was " off with his head " from Alice in wonderland "
Apparently the sentence for the section that applies is up to 7 years in prison and public flogging (seriously) |

I don't know if it's still the case and the law has changed, but certainly long after murder ceased to be a capital offence, treason was still a hanging offence. There was three crimes that were still punishable by death, and I'm sure that treason was one of them. |

I think you are right, but they would be in another part of the Treason Act. I think it is for crimes that are deemed "High Treason" |

Treason a very interesting subject.
Queen Elizabeth for example. Coronated in 1953. The first coronation ever to be broadcast live. By the BBC. Traditionally a royal coronation must take place on the stone of destiny. Something we know wasn't present as it was missing at the time. Then their was the oath that the Queen took. To rule the land upholding the laws of God..these laws are in black and white in the bible. So technically each time she gave assent to a political statute she committed treason.
Am I wrong or is our Queen treasonous |

Well she does have Sovereign Immunity so The Queen can't be arrested or be the subject of civil and criminal proceedings, meaning she is effectively exempt from the law.
So there is that! |

I fully understand this. But do we think this is acceptable in today's society. Any for of immunity should be outlawed. Don't you agree. Look at diplomatic immunity for example. It's a horrible rule that allows people to do as they wish and not be held accountable. Look at Prince Andrew. Do we think for a second if he wasn't who he was he'd not be in a cell by now?? |

Well Andrew is different in that he is not immune to any of it, not by law.
He is just like any other incredibly rich CisHet White Dude. One law for them one law for the rest of us. |

Cis white males have a different law to the rest of "US". What a load of codswallop.
Any form of immunity should be abolished. |

To answer the question, the last person charged with treason was in 1981, a lad who fired six blank shots at Trooping the Colour. The last person to be tried for treason was Lord Haw Haw (William Joyce) - he was hung in 1946. |

I imagine that the royal family have fleets of lawyers at their disposal to avoid any real legal problems.
However, I'm also sure there are lots of internet lawyers making up absolute nonsense about the royals and everyone else. See, for example, the idiots who tried to seize Edinburgh castle last year. |

Romans 13 v 1
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Therefore any political statute she gives assent to is effectively endorsed by God.
...
...
Assuming you believe this stuff.

A quick Google would tell me that the stone was indeed present under the coronation chair for the queen's coronation.
Giving royal assent to a statue is not worshiping that statue and creating a idol. |

Perhaps yiu shoukd charge JOHNSON he is highly likely to have given state information to Lebidev and allowed interference on electio s by the KGB specially regarding brexit which is the most treasonous act of self harm a country has committed on itself since Germany elected Hitler in 1933. |

"I'm shocked Tom missed this riveting news story !!"
I just happened to see a Tik Tok about it about 5 hours after the news broke.
Pretty sure Tom would have had some spin on it at some point in the next couple of days if I hadn't!
It wasn't all over the news yet when I saw it! |

Do you mean the specific clause or the law? Cos that would make it even stranger if they are trying to charge him under the treason act when it has been abolished!
I mean stranger things have happened! |

Because all the evidence from countries that have the death penalty shows that it works ever so well eh? If we're doing it to clamp down on stupidity ....

I don't think they have thought it through...
If we introduced the death penalty to clamp down on stupidity.
What is to stop people from defining those who support a method of punishment that is provably more expensive and could kill innocent people as stupid?
Or ANY other group?
Is stupidity based on common sense? IQ? Political Belief?
Even if the death penalty worked (which data suggests it doesn't) it would be a really bad motive for it. |

I do agree with the Internet lawyer comment. But that doesn't address the fact of immunity. NO-ONE Should be above the law purely for their stature within society. Surely everyone will agree here?? |
